Chapter 7

Adriane was Alexander’s personal bodyguard and assassin in her past life. She had seen plenty of corrupted and violent acts and carried out some herself. Breaking the leg of a maid was not scary at all to her.

It was just that the bodyguard in black smashed the baseball bat so hard and quick that it startled her.

Adriane pondered about how to answer Arthur’s question. Of course, she could not be honest and tell the truth. Although her soul was 25 years old, she was still a high school girl to Arthur. The Stewarts had kept her indoors for years. To a man with many experiences like Arthur, she was a naive girl.

As those thoughts ran through her mind, Adriane nodded her head timidly as she looked into Arthur’s eyes.

Any man would feel like protecting a weak and beautiful lady like her. That was what Adriane thought, at least. Just as Adriane thought Arthur would take her out of that room, Arthur said expressionlessly, “Scared? Well Watch it until you overcome your fear.”

Beckoning another man who wore a suit like the other bodyguards, Arthur left the room with the man pushing him in his wheelchair. That man obviously had a more intimate relationship with Arthur than the rest..

As for Adriane, Arthur left her in the room. Other than her, there was Josie rolling on the ground in pain, and the “executioner“, who held the baseball bat and kept smashing it on Josie’s leg.

Adriane’s jaw dropped as she watched the door shut in front of her..

She looked at the tightly shut door in disbelief as thoughts ran through her mind.

<Arthur left just like that? He left me with a shrieking maid who is being punished? Did he even ask me to watch her being punished until I overcome my fear? What the hell is he thinking, leaving a weak woman alone to watch some maid being punished brutally?

Does he remember that he was my fiance? I’ve said that I’m scared! Besides, who wants to see a maid getting beaten up? I don’t have such a weird

hobby!>

Adriane rolled her eyes and ran to the door, only to replace that Arthur had his man lock the door from the outside. She clenched her teeth, frustrated, and patted the door profusely, “Mr. Arthur, open the door!”

The mahogany door remained locked. Adriane banged twice more. “I don’t want to stay here!”

Finally, annoyed, Adriane yelled Arthur’s name with her teeth clenched, “Arthur Jenkins!”

Unfortunately, her fiance was long gone. Adriane sighed and could not help asking herself whether she had made a mistake in agreeing to the engagement to Arthur.

Unable to get out, she stood in the doorway, holding the hem of her gown in her hand. The rain gradually subsided, but the freezing wind constantly

blew in from the bay window.

Her gown was not thick enough to keep her from the cold, and she was tired both physically and mentally. Soon, Adriane shivered in the cold wind and

sneezed.

Josie struggled at first, but then she was exhausted and laid motionlessly on the ground.

She looked up and saw Adriane. After being beaten, she had lost all her strength and hoped the torture would be over soon.

Adriane suw Josie stretching out her trembling hands towards her and looking at her with tears in her eyes. However, Adriane chose to ignore Josie.

Josie deserved the punishment. It was for what she had done to Adriane.

Josie’s right leg was severely fractured from the punishment, but that was not the end of it. Arthur had ordered the bodyguard to lock her up somewhere else to interrogate her further.

After all, Josie was merely a maid. She would not have the guts to instigate Adriane to run away from her engagement ceremony if there were not someone powerful instructing her to do so.

Adriane knew that the mastermind was Alexander, but she had no evidence. There was one thing about Alexander that made him able to succeed in so many malicious plans. He was a cautious person and very careful whenever he carried out his plans. Acting rashly was not his way of dealing with things. Adriane knew that Arthur would not be able to gather much evidence from Josie.

Adriane was certain she could not defeat Alexander with one blow. She knew she could not be too anxious about that. At least she had completed the first step of her plan. As Arthur’s fiancee, she would have plenty of opportunities to take her revenge on Alexander.

After Josie’s punishment ended, someone finally opened the door for Adriane. All her accumulated anger had turned into a helpless sigh.

The engagement ceremony was over, and she planned to say goodbye to Arthur and return to the Stewarts‘ mansion.

The man, who had helped Arthur push his wheelchair a while ago, waited for Adriane at the door. When that man saw Adriane, he bowed respectfully and said, “Mrs. Jenkins, my name is Yael Turner. I’ll lead you to Mr. Arthur’s room now.”

Adriane was not used to being addressed as Mrs. Jenkins. So, she did not realize that Yael was talking to her. She sneezed as she followed behind Yael and said awkwardly, “You can call me Miss Stewart.”

Adriane was only engaged to Arthur, not married to him. It would be inappropriate for Yael to call her Mrs. Jenkins.

Yael’s voice was gentle but respectful, “Sure, Mrs. Jenkins.

Adriane was speechless. It seemed like Arthur’s subordinates were stubborn like him.

They walked along the corridor and up the stairs to the third floor, then stopped at a closed door.

Yael leaned slightly towards Adriane and said, “Mrs. Jenkins, please be as quiet as possible. Mr. Arthur is a light sleeper.”

Only then did Adriane recall that the only reason she wanted to meet Arthur was to bid farewell before she headed back to the Stewarts‘ mansion. So, she told Yael, “I’m going back to the Stewarts. When Mr. Arthur wakes up, please convey my message to him. There is no need for me to go in and disturb his sleep.”

Unfortunately, Yael did not have the slightest intention of letting Adriane leave. He smiled and said, “Please say that to Mr. Arthur personally. He is expecting you.”

Adriane knew that noble families like Jenkins had many rules. She decided not to trouble Yael and walked into the bedroom.

After Adriane entered the room, the smile on Yael’s face faded. He had a cold expression on his face.

His gaze became sharp and menacing when he was in the interrogation room where they locked Josie.

Before interrogating Josie, he asked the “executioner” bodyguard about Adriane’s reaction when she was in the room with them. After answering truthfully, the bodyguard continued cautiously, “I think she seems to have caught a cold. Should we prepare something for her to put on and keep her

warm?”

Yael shot the bodyguard a warning glare, “Have you lost your mind, trying to prepare clothes for Mr. Arthur’s woman?”

The bodyguard immediately lowered his head and said nothing more.

Someone brought a chair for Yael, and he sat down. He gazed at Josie and beckoned one of the bodyguards to take out the rag in Josie’s mouth.

Josie had fainted because of the intense pain. Then, one of the bodyguards poured a bucket of ice water on her and woke her up. Noticing that they had removed the rag in her mouth, Josie quickly confessed and begged for mercy, “Mr. Turner, I’m Innocent. It was Mr. Alexander who ordered me to do that.”

Yael was not surprised at all. He questioned her, “Now, tell me everything you know. I’ll cut off one of your fingers for each word you forget to confess.”

Adriane’s high heels clicked on the bright floor as she walked. Remembering what Yael had told her, she took them off and carried them in her hand.

The chilly feeling on the air–conditioned floor made her shudder from the toes to the forehead. After adapting to the cold floor, Adriane began to observe

the decoration in the room.

The heavy curtains were closed, and only a faint light filtered through them. It took Adriane’s eyes a long time to adjust to the darkness. She noticed that the room was a suite with sofas, chairs, and a bathroom. There was a divider blocking the deepest part of the room. She could vaguely see the curves underneath the blanket on the bed.

It should be Arthur underneath it, having his hap

Not wanting to disturb Arthur’s sleep, she sat down carefully on the sofa and brought her feet up. Then she took her phone out of her handbag and muted it. After ensuring everything was in silent mode, she checked her unread messages.

The latest message was from Juliette.

Juliette: Sister, mom, daddy, and I are going home now. Take good care of yourself in Jenkins‘ manor!]

Adriane’s eyes widened as she read through the message. She could not believe that the Stewarts dumped her in Jenkins‘ manor. They seemed to have no intention of taking her back to their mansion with them.
