Benson 183
Chapter 183 Running on Empty
Yvonne’s keen intuition made her acutely aware of Benson’s emotional changes.
However, it seemed that everything was happening too late.
Steven’s phone call was like a sharp dagger, stabbing straight into her heart, causing unprecedented panic.
She worried about what extreme measures Steven might take against her, making her sleepless with anxiety.
Upon learning that Yvonne might be in danger, Benson was frantic.
He couldn’t imagine what his life would be like without Yvonne.
He quickly contacted George, asking for his help in tracking Yvonne’s whereabouts.
Victoria, seeing her son so anxious and pacing non–stop in the room, was puzzled.
She had never seen her son so out of sorts, which made her very confused.
Benson stood outside in the cold, waiting for news from George. Despite wearing thin clothing, he didn’t feel the chill at all.
He tried calling Yvonne again, only to replace that her phone was off.
All this made him even more anxious, knowing Yvonne might be in danger.
Since returning from St. George, Benson had been preparing for Olivia’s freedom.
He and Olivia had reached an agreement that once the matter was settled, they would owe each other nothing.
Benson knew he owed Yvonne a lot.
Three years of waiting and countless heartfelt moments had been wasted by him, and he needed to spend the rest of his life making up for it.
However, to completely free Olivia from Steven’s control, the only way was to force Steven to let go.
Steven had a complex background and ruthless methods, but he also had many competitors and enemies.
Benson used these people’s greed, luring them with money to deal with Steven.
At the same time, Steven had been gradually turning to legitimate business in recent years. With the vast domestic market, he couldn’t engage in illegal activities anymore.
But even so, Benson felt somewhat powerless, given Steven’s influence abroad.
Benson had originally planned for a quick resolution, but didn’t anticipate that this move would anger Steven, who then found Yvonne.
Just as Benson was about to despair, George finally called, telling him Yvonne’s car had left Las Vegas via the airport highway.
“Leaving Las Vegas, to where?” George was silent, the urgency of the situation leaving his mind blank.
He said softly, “I don’t know. We need to think of a solution quickly.”
Benson nodded, a flash of worry and anxiety in his eyes.
He knew he couldn’t resolve this without his father’s help. He felt uncertain. and truly scared.
The Taylor family was just about to start dinner.
Benson, carrying a hint of cold, walked to the dining table, his eyes filled with anxiety and unease.
“Dad, I need to talk to you about something.”
Charles, seeing his son so flustered, frowned, put down his chopsticks, and the two of them went upstairs.
In the study, Benson detailed the situation, and Charles, after listening,
remained silent for a long time, his face heavy.
“Why did you get involved with such a person?”
had no choice,” Benson’s tone was filled with helplessness and pain.
“Just like you can’t stop caring about Yvonne and forget John, can you?”
Charles sighed deeply. Benson’s loyalty and deep emotions were inherited. from him.
After thinking for a moment, a determined look flashed in his eyes, “If Yvonne is in danger, why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Benson’s face was serious, his lips tightly pressed together, saying nothing.
His heart was full of unease and guilt, knowing all this was because he chose to help Olivia, bringing unintentional disaster to Yvonne.
Charles looked at his son, his eyes filled with concern and seriousness, What are you thinking?”
“Of course, I don’t want her to be harmed,” Benson’s tone was firm, his brows furrowed.
“I can handle it myself, but I’m afraid my actions might cause her harm.” His voice was low and worried, as if blaming his own incompetence.
Charles was silent for a moment, taking a deep breath, and said, “You like her.” This was not a question, but a statement.
Benson smiled bitterly, a look of helplessness and sweetness in his eyes, Mom was right about her. She said Yvonne is a rare girl. Once you spend time with her, you naturally like her.”
“Yes, I tried to avoid it for three years, but I couldn’t. I’m falling for her.”
Benson’s tone carried a hint of frustration, but also a trace of inexplicable sweetness.
His heart was full of contradictions, not wanting to be controlled by his emotions, but at this moment, he found himself deeply entangled, unable to extricate himself.
Charles sighed, his heart filled with complex emotions. He knew his son’s deep loyalty and emotional nature were excellent qualities, but not ideal. for a future company leader.
“Benson, life is never perfect. Whether it’s love or affection, sometimes. you have to choose… In your position now, do you want Yvonne’s love or her life?”
Charles’s voice was low and filled with helplessness, his eyes flashing with complex emotions.
Steven reclined in the passenger seat, idly flipping through his phone.
The car was filled with a suffocatingly heavy atmosphere.
Yvonne’s eyes were fixed on the road ahead. Since leaving the highway exit near the city, she hadn’t said a word.
Although the scenery outside transitioned from the bustling city to the serene countryside, her anxiety and disappointment were as hard and clear as the stones beneath the car’s wheels.
Outside, the setting sun began to dip, casting a golden glow through the car window onto her tense face.
Her fingers gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white from the
pressure.
Steven noticed her tension, his mouth curling into a smile.
He leisurely put down his phone, resting an arm on the window, turning his face toward Yvonne with a mocking glint in his eyes.
“You and your husband, what’s the deal? It looks like he doesn’t care much about your safety,” Steven said with a deliberate lightness, seeking amusement in the heavy situation.
Yvonne felt his words like sharp blades cutting into her already scarred
heart.
The pain rose from within, but she took a deep breath, hiding her turmoil.
She stared straight ahead, maintaining a facade of calm.

The low engine hum suddenly reminded her of the dwindling fuel.
Yvonne spoke coolly, her voice slightly hard, “The car is out of gas. You refuel it.”
Steven was taken aback for a moment, then laughed, his smile mixed with approval and amusement.
He studied Yvonne’s profile, trying to decipher more from her carefully maintained calm.
“Interesting, your husband is quite complex,” he continued.
“A man who doesn’t love his woman wouldn’t get involved in such trouble. He’s willing to spend so much on this. What do you think he wants?”
