Chapter 186 Family Business Entanglements

Benson sat on a bench in the emergency room, one side of his body still

numb.

He looked tired and disheveled, surrounded by the tense atmosphere of the emergency room.

The glaring lights, the doctors and nurses bustling about, the hurried footsteps, and the ticking of machines created an invisible sense of

pressure.

Arthur supported his father, watching Benson, with a complex emotion in his eyes.

“Dad, what’s with that look? You’re still alive, aren’t you?” His voice was lighthearted, but his eyes were filled with concern.

“What time do you think it is? Stop joking around!” Charles rebuked softly, frowning.

“Your mother has already picked up Yvonne and plans to return.” His words carried a hint of helplessness and anxiety.

Benson leaned back in his seat. Upon hearing his father’s words, he responded with a cold “oh” and a distant gaze, as if pondering something important.

His fingers tapped lightly on the armrest, revealing his inner unease.

Arthur, dissatisfied, gave him a kick. “You’re fine, so give Yvonne a call.”

His tone was filled with impatience and reproach, his face showing an expression of disappointment.

Benson shook his head, his eyes dim. “Forget it.”

Charles glanced at his son, wanting to say something but held back.

After a moment of silence, he said, “Arthur, your brother has been through a lot lately, don’t push him.”

His voice was deep, tinged with exhaustion and helplessness.

Arthur felt uneasy as he watched the silence between his father and brother.

“What’s going on? Did something happen?” His tone carried urgency and

concern.

“I’m planning to join the Taylor Group,” Benson suddenly said, his voice. filled with weariness and determination.

“After all, I’m about to squander all that I’ve built up over the years and can only go home to rely on the family.” His voice was full of resignation and self–mockery.

Arthur frowned. He knew his brother wasn’t telling the truth.

This sudden car accident was already suspicious, and his sudden decision to join the company made it even more so.

“Fine, don’t tell me then.” His tone was slightly dissatisfied and helpless.

Benson sighed, turning to Arthur, “Brother, could you have little Emma help me with something?” His eyes showed a hint of pleading.

Arthur raised an eyebrow, “Little Emma, Little Emma, what could she do for him?” His voice carried a hint of confusion and incomprehension.

Yvonne returned to the Taylor family’s old house, and it was already 2 AM.

She was extremely tired and quickly took a shower, wanting nothing more than to lie down and sleep.

However, once in bed, she tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep.

The night was deep, and the surroundings were silent, amplifying the pain. deep within her heart.

The wind outside gently rustled the leaves, whispering as if telling a tale of

sorrow.

She picked up her phone for a glance. There were no missed calls or message notifications.

The light from the screen stung her eyes. She was exhausted, yet not the least bit sleepy.

She didn’t know what she was expecting, but the sense of loss and pain. surged like a tide.

She tossed her phone aside, laying face down on the bed, feeling like a huge joke.

Tears flowed involuntarily, soaking her pillow.

It was nearly dawn when Yvonne finally fell asleep.

However, having been tense the whole night, her sleep was restless.

Yvonne took a day off and didn’t go to work. When she woke up, it was nearly 10 AM.

Little Emma was lying by her bedside. When she saw Yvonne awake, she immediately ran over and hugged her tightly.

Yvonne frowned, “Wha–what’s the matter?” Her voice carried a hint of surprise and confusion.

“I just wanted to hug you, Auntie Yvonne, Auntie Yvonne, you smell so nice.”

Little Emma giggled as she spoke, and Yvonne felt that her bad mood from the previous night was cured as soon as she opened her eyes to see Little Emma.

“Little Emma, you seem a bit strange.” Yvonne smiled, her eyes softening.

“No, just… wanted to hug you.” Little Emma said, “I’ve been waiting since 8 o’clock, making sure that when you woke up, you’d get my hug first.” Her voice was filled with childish innocence.

Little Emma didn’t quite understand why her dad wanted her to go to Auntie Yvonne’s room right when she woke up to give her a big hug!

However, she was more than willing to give such a hug.

“Since you made me so happy, I’ll take you out for some treats today, okay?”

Yvonne said with a smile, her mood lightened by Little Emma’s hug.

“Okay, okay! Can I have donuts today?” Little Emma asked excitedly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

“Sure!” Yvonne agreed, feeling a warmth in her heart.

After waking up, Yvonne received only work messages from Megan and nothing else.

She didn’t think much about it and took Little Emma out for shopping after breakfast.

The sun was bright on the streets, and the shops along the sidewalks were filled with an array of goods, with people coming and going.

Yvonne held Little Emma’s hand as they strolled the streets. They stopped at a dessert shop and bought several boxes of donuts.

Little Emma ate her donuts while excitedly sharing her school life with Yvonne, her innocent smile bringing Yvonne a sense of comfort.

Yvonne had been staying at the Taylor family’s house for three days.

As night fell, the old Taylor house became particularly lively.

The old–fashioned and elegant building was located in the suburbs, sculpted by time into a gentle and peaceful form.

In the courtyard, colorful lights and garlands were hung in crisscross patterns.

Whenever a breeze passed through, they swayed gently, rustling and adding a festive and touching atmosphere.

Inside the house, every corner was filled with laughter and joy.

Family members gathered around the large sofa in the living room or stood by the dining table, enjoying the rare moments of reunion.

The children played joyfully, while the adults shared stories about their lives, filling the air with happiness and harmony.

However, just as the festive atmosphere was reaching its peak, Benson

suddenly returned, breaking the warmth.

The doorbell rang urgently, followed by the soft sound of the door opening.

Benson appeared in the doorway, looking a bit weary, with a hint of

indifference in his eyes.

Though he wore a simple suit, his unkempt hair and slightly messy tie betrayed his rush and anxiety.

The family reacted differently to his arrival, some overjoyed, others frowning.

He offered no explanation for his absence over the past few days, acting as if nothing had happened.

He walked straight to the dining table, picked up a napkin, elegantly placed it on his lap, and began eating in silence.

Sitting next to Benson was his wife, Yvonne.

Though they appeared like a loving couple, they were as distant as strangers at that moment.

Yvonne wore an evening gown, looking elegant and dignified. Her expression was calm, trying to hide her inner unease.

At the dining table, the family sometimes discussed domestic affairs, sometimes talked about the latest happenings in town.

Yvonne occasionally chimed in with a word or two but mostly listened.

Especially when the conversation turned to Benson, she pretended to be calm, though waves of emotion surged within her.

Benson sat beside her, occasionally observing her poised d

emeanor and delicate way of eating, his eyes reflecting complex emotions.
