Chapter 100

Damien placed a finger under her chin and lifted it, gently brushing his lips across hers before taking her lower lip and sucking on it. She moaned and felt him smile before moving his mouth to her ear.

This is neither the time nor the place for those sounds, baby,he teased.

She nodded and pulled back, replaceing him smiling deviously. He kissed her nose. She was almost in awe that he could be so composed about the whole ordeal and briefly wondered if he was putting on a show. Was he really this collected or was he putting on a front of strength for her sake? Either way, Ana couldn’t help but appreciate having him to lean on.

Ana rested her head on his chest and played with the collar of his shirt. She occasionally reached up and scratched the hair at the nape of his neck. It made her smile when he tilted his neck to try and encourage her fingers to explore a little more of

his skin.

Alan woke up half an hour before the plane landed at their first stop. They walked quickly to the other side of the terminal to help Alan exhaust the little energy he had regained from his nap on the flight. It was completely futile, though. He bounced up and down from takeoff to touchdown.

Damien looked a little irritated but he handled it well. When Ana tried to demand that Alan sit down and be quiet for the hundredth time, Damien took him back to the steward’s lounge and let him jump around there.

By the time they reached their destination, Ana was beyond nervous. She gripped Damien’s hand tightly as he carried Alan on his other forearm towards the baggage check. Damien glanced at her and furrowed his brow.

You okay?

I’m fine, she muttered, trying not to allow her agitation to turn into irritation against him.

Where did you park?Damien asked as they grabbed the luggage off the belt. She drew a blank. Ana?

I don’t remember,” she admitted.

Damien tried to say the names of the different parking lots but she couldn’t remember a thing. She tried her best to get some memory, but it didn’t help.

You have to remember something!

They heard a tiny sneeze and they glanced over at Alan who was wiping his nose on his sleeve and watching his parents

interact.

Just give me a second,Ana said quietly. Apparently, Damien was just as bothered as her, he was just better at hiding it.

He pulled her in, wrapping an arm around her. This was common when they argued in front of Alan. He said that his parents had done the same when he was little and it had helped him somewhat overcome the fear of watching his parentsrelationship fall apart.

Anastasia knew that it was important for Alan to see that though his parents fought sometimes, they still loved each other. Being a child of divorce, Ana understood it even better. It made her happy knowing that Damien and she had similar views on these things.

I think that I parked in the garage. Longterm? I wasn’t sure whether three days was considered long or short and I didn’t want to get the car towed, but I was in a hurry.

Damien chuckled. They wouldn’t tow the car. It just costs more to park in short term.

She stared at him. Five seconds ago, they were irritated with each other and now they were alright. She was amazed at how far they had come in a matter of months.

I didn’t know that, she said. She grabbed Alan’s hand. Sweetie, do you remember where we parked?

Alan promptly chirped the number. Instantly, Ana remembered where she had parked.

My smart boy,she smiled.

It still took them half an hour to replace the car. But eventually, they settled down and headed home. She let Damien drive. Her eyes were heavy and she didn’t want to drive in that state.

I’m going to call your father and let him know that we are on the way,she said, reaching for her purse and grabbing her phone. She looked at it and realized she had several missed calls and messages. Most of them were from their family but there was one from an unknown number.

Why are they coming through right now?she grumbled to no one in particular.

Damien shrugged. We should upgrade your service.

That was his solution to everything: using money to get better and newer things. She quickly went through the messages, all of which asked her to call as soon as possible. She called home first and let her parents know they had landed.

Next, Damien’s father was on call.

Do you have any information?Ana asked after the general pleasantries. She lowered her voice and looked out of the window. She noticed Damien angle his head so that he could hear her side of the conversation.

Carl was quiet. Yes, I do. But I think we should talk about it later.

Can you tell me if it was her or not?

Anastasia, the lawyer will explain everything when you get home, okay? After Alan is in bed.

She wanted to protest but something in the way Carl spoke made her stop. Okay, I will call you when we get to the house.

Carl sighed. Come to our house. Damien and your house is still a wreck.

Anything?Damien asked.

Ana shrugged. Something, but he doesn’t want to tell us over the phone.

Damien frowned. That doesn’t sound good.”

The drive felt longer than usual. They stopped for a quick bite and a few more times because Alan wanted to pee. Ana dozed off here and then as Damien put on some soft music, but as they pulled into the driveway, Ana was fully awake, restless, and unwilling to replace out what had been found.

Though she wanted to know, she was dreading it all the same.
