Chapter 302 The Setup
Katherine called Marshall after some intense rounds of inner debate.
The police had gone through the surveillance tapes, which clearly showed that those people headed straight for the backyard after they got here, and Kyle and the gang knew nothing about it since they weren't even there. And when Kyle's group finally arrived, they didn't check out the backyard, either, but went directly upstairs for their poker game.
It was obvious that the four of them had absolutely no idea what was going on in the backyard from start to finish. However, the police insisted that someone came to bail them out.
A long-faced Katherine only called Marshall after the female officer urged her to for a few times. She literally knew nobody other than Marshall.
Marshall was in his office when he received the phone call. He was slightly taken aback, since Katherine had been extremely impatient with him yesterday when he went to her place, so why should she be calling him now?
Marshall picked up. "What's wrong?"
Katherine sighed. "Marshall... I'm in trouble."
Marshall's brows creased into a frown.
Kyle was still in the backyard, but had been pulled away from the man on the floor by a police officer, since if he continued kicking and stomping the man like that, the addict would have kicked the bucket before he could recover from the influence of drugs.
Out of breath and voice hoarse, Kyle was in fact exhausted, too. It was a tiresome affair, giving someone a good beating.
The group of suspects were crouched on the ground, daring not move at all.
Half a dozen bags of "stuff" were found when the police searched the backyard. Kyle gave those bags a simple glance before he looked away. To be completely honest, he used to have this stuff around, too. But since he had received relentless visits without warning from the police in recent days, he had the good sense to ship it all away. However, these sons of bitches should have the audacity to bring this kind of stuff over, knowing that his club had been a hotspot for police checkup recently? He had very good reasons to suspect that they were here at the command of someone who disliked him and wanted to set him up.
The backyard was still being searched.
The police had found the substances where these people were, so Kyle figured that they continued to search in hopes of replaceing some of his own "private collection." Kyle had on a cold expression, but he wasn't at all afraid.
After a good while in the backyard, the police weren't able to replace anything more, so they made an inventory of their discoveries, confiscated the illegal substances, and arrested the group of Kyle's guests. Naturally, Kyle himself couldn't avoid the fate of being escorted by the police to the front door of the club.
Marshall was already there signing on some papers, with Peter in tow, who was there to bail Hector out. Shortly afterwards, Margaret's family arrived, too.
When Kyle walked towards them, Katherine approached him hurriedly. "Hey Kyle, what's gonna happen now?"
Kyle spat in the direction of his now-arrested guests. "These sons of bitches set me up."
Worried, Katherine asked, "Are you okay? Will you have to go with them?"
Marshall had finished signing the papers, and he walked towards them with one hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry. Kyle's had more than his share of this kind of situation."
Which, true, Kyle had. But still, he was angry, because when he was taken away by the police in the past, he himself had been more or less guilty indeed, but this time, he was purely implicated in this mess. Kyle looked supremely displeased. Shooting a glance at Marshall, he said, "I'll come back later."
Marshall didn't say anything else on the matter. He simply took Katherine and Hector to Katherine's place after Kyle was shipped away in a police car.
Kyle's club would have to close down, at least temporarily.
Katherine was still somewhat shocked as she sat in the car. She really could get into any situation when she associated with Kyle. It was the first time that she was involved in something like this.
As he drove, Peter asked Katherine, "What happened exactly? Did you get framed by somebody else?"
"I have no idea," answered Katherine, genuinely confused. "Kyle invited us to his club to play poker, so we went, and those people were already in the backyard when we got there. None of us went to check up on them, and so we had no idea what they were doing."
Gazing outside the window, Marshall had a scowl on his face, but his tone was light. "It's fine. The Haverfords will be there shortly and get this mess over with. It's just that I saw a man being carried out of the club, and he seemed to be a member of the Russell family."
"Seemed so," said Peter after some consideration, "and that person seemed to have blood covered on his face, although I didn't get a clear enough view of that."
"Look into it later," demanded Marshall, "replace out who that person is and who he's been meeting recently."
Peter stared at Marshall in the rearview mirror. "So you do think that Mr. Haverford was framed, right boss?"
Marshall hesitated briefly before he answered. "Kyle's club has been frequently and meticulously inspected by the police recently. As such, those people ought not to visit his club."
Since probably everywhere else was safer.
"That's right," said Peter, nodding, "I don't know how to make of this."
As they were talking, the car pulled over at Katherine's front door. So they all got out of the car and into Katherine's residence.
Katherine was quite thirsty after the whole incident, so she boiled some water and served everyone tea.
Seeing Hector sitting motionlessly to the side, Katherine put a cup of tea in front of him. "Have yourself some water."
Turning his gaze towards her, Hector said with a faint smile, "Sure."
And then he addressed Marshall. "Do you think it could have been Patrick or Alexis?"
After a pause, Marshall frowned as he looked at Hector.
Hector pondered for a while before he spoke. "I was at the Bennett residence the other day and overheard Patrick and Alexis mid-conversation. They were speaking in a low volume and I couldn't hear very clearly, but I think I heard them utter Kyle's name."
Marshall had on a solemn expression. "I'll look into it. If it was really their doing, I'm sure Kyle would get them good without us having to ask him to."
Because Kyle hated those two enough when they did nothing wrong; so imagine what he'd do if they dared to mess with him in any way.
Glancing at Marshall, Hector eventually managed out, "Thank you for your help today."
Hector, just like Katherine, had nobody he could call. He didn't want to call the Bennetts because he was disinclined to allow them to meddle in his affairs. But Katherine had proactively asked, in her phone call with Marshall, that Peter came over to bail Hector out. She was clearly very mindful of helping him.
Marshall flashed a nonchalant smile. "I did it mostly because Katherine asked me to."
Because had Katherine remained silent on the matter, Marshall wouldn't give a rat's ass about how Hector'd be doing. But since Katherine had indeed asked him to help, he couldn't really refuse, especially since it was just a small favor.
Katherine looked at Marshall and said "thank you" too after some pause.
Marshall harrumphed. "No need for the formalities between you and me."
Katherine tsked, her eyebrows forming a slight scowl before relenting.
Marshall was behaving really weird, since he would never have said something like this before. He used to be the haggling-over-every-penny kind of guy.
As Marshall finished speaking, he kept his gaze on Katherine, giving her goosebumps.
Marshall looked like he was scheming or hesitating. But whatever it was, Katherine knew for sure that he was up to no good.
After a while, Marshall turned away his gaze with a silent smile. He wasn't scheming anything, not really. He just thought that this was kind of fun.
That was when Kyle called, asserting angrily over the phone that the son of a bitch purposefully set him up.
Instantly, Katherine asked, "You're out?"
"Yeah, I am. Rosalie came to the police station and got me out," said Kyle, still sounding disgruntled. "Where are you all? I'm coming over."[
