Dead Luna
Chapter 58

Amelia's

POV

The next morning I was meeting with an omega werewolf named Larry Crumb, who worked on maintenance of the pack buildings and was a janitor of sorts. All he could do was complain about his lack of love life. Naturally, in his eyes the fault was entirely from the local she wolf population, and not the result of his own shortcomings.

"None of the single she wolves around here are interested in me because they all want doctors and lawyers he explains. "But none of them has been all that lucky either, even with so many desperate single guys around here. They shouldn't be so picky!" I personally think a big part of his problem is the fact that he smells like bleach, his hair was looking never been combed, and he's missing a couple teeth. Hmm... there was that one she wolf in iron peak... What do you think, Ambrosia?

Girlfriend, that gal has enough troubles AND pups without daddies, to need a raggedy man child like this. But we still gots about 5 more packs to take a look see and maybe still replace them both mates yet. If not, being single starts to look good if ya gotta wake up every day to this fine specimen of a wolf!

"Well, I can't promise anything," I tell Larry as tactfully as I could. "But I might have a few possibilities for you. By the way, how do you feel about children?"

Larry was just opening his mouth to reply when we both hear something. A loud commotion was happening out in the hallway, and the door to the Luna office suddenly opened. Several people entered, including Alpha Garrett and Luna Heather, followed by a couple of wolves I had never met but were obviously high ranking. And last to enter was Prince Alexander! The aura rolling off of him was quite extreme, and everyone around me were bowing and baring their necks.

I gave a slight nod in recognition. And he had the gall to glare at me. Obviously he was not expecting to come across a she wolf who didn't feel the need to show reverence in his presence.

King Alexander was rather regal in his bearing. Very tall and broad shouldered, green eyes exactly the same shade of mine, his dark hair shot through with a bit of gray giving him an air of distinction, and wearing a well tailored dark suit. He needed no special regalia to announce to the world who he was. There was no mistaking his regal aura.

"Are you the special wolf that has been blessed by the moon goddess?" He asks, while looking me up and down like a horse at auction.

"Umm, yes, I suppose I am," I say, uncertain. "You're, umm... how do I address you? Nobody warned me you were coming!"

"Most call me King Alexander, your majesty, or your highness." He informs me, "but you are welcome to callone Alex, or mate, if you choose me."

Ok, that explains whatever the Luna and Alpha have been up to since yesterday. They had been constantly whispering together in my presence, and trying to feel me out about my potential mates. Perhaps they thought they were doing me a favor that might also get them some royal favor in the capital.

"Well, your majesty, I'm afraid that won't be possible." I say, and then cringe as everyone in the room bows even lower before the king, feeling his anger directed at me. Even I bare my neck at the onslaught of his magnificent aura.

"Why ever not?" He says slowly and distinctly, just in case I somehow misunderstood either his meaning or what he was offering. "I was told that the moon goddess has not only blessed you with a gift, but given you the ability to choose your own fated mate. If that is so, why would you not chose me?"

"Because, your majesty, among the other names I'm allowed to call you, I can also call you father." I inform him. Suddenly everyone is released from his aura, with sighs of relief. Poor Larry, being the wolf of lowest ranking in the room, has to get up from the floor. Alexander is staring at me in shock. Alpha Garrett and Luna Heather practically have to pick their jaws up from the floor. The other men who had entered the room with the king stared at each other in shock, before coming close to me and inspecting me further. One of them looks towards his king, and they obviously have a conversation by mind link. Only Jackson seems to be calm, if not bored.

"Do you have your Lycan yet?" One of kings men asks me.

I nod, and Ambrosia comes forward. "Of course this gal has a Lycan! Me and Amelia here been busy helping out my bestie Selene to get all these single wolves mated off as a favor. And we don't appreciate your buttin' in on one of our appointments here without an invite."

And then Ambrosia heads back inside my head, leaving me with a bunch of irritated official wolves. Did you really have to be so rude?

I'm just making sure they understand that we are here on official goddess business, so they can't just stomp all over our rights and drag us to the capital until they figure out what to do with us.

I concede that is a very good point. Meanwhile, all around me is silent while everyone seems to be conversing by mind link.

"Are we done?" Larry mouths to me with hardly any sound. I nod back, and he scampers out of the room as quick as he can. Nobody even notices, and I'm rather wishing I could disappear just as quick as Larry did. Meanwhile, I see another wolf outside in the hall looking inside the room nervously. I assume it's my 11:40 appointment.

"I'm sure you gentlemen wont mind, but my next appointment has just arrived," I inform them sternly. I don't want them thinking that my next request was optional. I begin directing them towards the door. "So I need you all to wait outside in the hall, or some other location of your choice. I'll be taking a lunch break in 20 minutes, and you can continue to gawk at me all you like then. Shoo! Shoo!"

"Just one question, if you please," King Alexander requested just before I shut the door on him. I look him directly in the eye, and nod. "Who is your mother?"

"Juliette Hearst." I say, and see the glint of recognition in his eye. So he remembers my mom after all. Good.

"You need to be very careful." Jackson cautions me as I turn away from the door. As if I wasn't aware of what all was at stake. Maybe I had been a little out of the loop, in not knowing that he was already king until just now, or that he was also a widower looking for a new mate. But I wasn't stupid. I knew there would be problems in declaring myself as I did. They will try to make me a pawn in their political game.

What else was I to have done, though? I certainly didn't encourage the Alpha and Luna of this pack to seek out a royal alliance on my behalf, as they apparently did. And I have zero intention of either being mated to my own father, or to anyone whom I have not chosen of my own free will.

We'll be okay, girlfriend. We got each other, and I won't let them steam roller all over us. Let's get these next 2 appointments done, and go see just how far these bozos brains can get in just 20 minutes. Because it ain't gonna be good to wait longer. I agree, and then go help the next wolf, Andre Whittaker, a border patrol guard who has a lisp.

It's hard to concentrate on the task at hand as Andre talks about what he desires in a mate. He's not shy about asking for big boobs, a fine a*s, and not very intelligent. And while I'm sure I can replace exactly the sort of she wolf he desires, I have to wonder how many of them will desire him in return. And I'm wondering how many hundreds of wolves I had yet to help in the next couple weeks before I can go back to just being plain old Amy Hearst.

But I never really was plain old Amy Hearst, and I'll never be able to go back to the way things were before. Now my life resembles that of a butterfly, changing from one part of my life as I move on the the next, turning into what I was always meant to be, I suppose.
