Cleo's POV

"It doesn't look any different." The moment I held the athame in my hand the smooth silver blade began to illuminate as it took on an orange glow. "You did it!"

"Try not to sound too surprised will you Roman. I said I would combine it and that's exactly what I've done. And from what I hear it's just in the nick of time. The elders have got everyone looking for the both of you. Your fathers are outraged." "They'll get over it."

"Will they?"

"I can feel it." The power in the athame called to me like a siren of the sea called to the sailors. It was impossible to ignore as my own power latched on.

"Cleo?" Roman placed his hands on my shoulders just as I closed my eyes. Feeling the tug of warmth within me I embraced it calling it forward. "FUCK!" Opening my eyes my jaw dropped. Remembering how I had once thrown fire at Axel using all my anger to form it, this was different. It felt natural, but this felt alluring and dangerous all at the same time. There were no doubts in my mind that hellfire would be addictive. I could only hope that it would be something I could stop. Something this strong would cause untold destruction if allowed to get out of hand.

The entire blade no longer held a simple glow instead flames danced on the metal. My hand became warm as I held the hilt so I knew it was me calling the hellfire forwards only confirming our suspicions.

"How is this possible?" My eyes darted to Henrick who looked as if even he hadn't expected this to happen.

"You hold more power over the hellfire than you think. My guess is if you can call this much, how much can your pup control when she's older. That's why Hades wants her, and if I'm right, like I always am, I'm going to say that why the elders are on high alert."

"She's the power the elders were speaking about, she must be. Think about it, she has our blood flowing through her. Imagine the magic from both our bloodlines entwined." The look on his face scared me as he spoke. Nobody in history had held that much power and not gone insane.

"She'd be unstoppable once she learnt to use it. That's why the entire council want her dead. They know that if Hades were able to succeed in syphoning the magic from her there would be no way of stopping him. He would be able to literally open the gates to hell allowing every demon that ever existed to walk the earth. Imagine the turmoil and damage that would cause. Each demon ever vanquished would get their chance at revenge and you wouldn't be able to stop them coming back. Once those gates are open it's game over."

Hearing their conversation, I felt helpless. She was my daughter, my pup. It was only now that I understood why the council were frightened of her.

"Why does Hades need her to shift?" It was the one question I needed an answer to.

"The prophecy says the wolf is her guardian. Once shifted outside of the womb her entire being will be at its most powerful, at least until she comes of age. She is set to be the strongest of all the previous..."

"Mum..." Roman walked off having heard what Henrik said. Though I wasn't sure what any of this had to do with Athena.

"Roman..."

"Leave him be Cleo. This is hard for him. There's still so much you don't understand."

"Like what? If you don't tell me, how am I supposed to know."

"There is only ever one guardian wolf at a time."

"But what does that have to do with his mum?"

"Because Athena's wolf was a guardian. Which means the chances of your daughter being one were slim. They are the rarest of the rare when it comes to wolves. For your pup to be a guardian, and one that can shift before the age of eighteen at that means she is the most powerful by far. It also means her wolf was Athena's wolf. There's a good chance she may still retain some of those memories. Over the years they fade away, but she only just died so they wouldn't have had time to fade. That alone can cause problems. Your pup will have all these memories and not know what they are. They could destroy her mentally if she doesn't learn to deal with them."

"I didn't know."

"How could you know. It wasn't like they shouted it from the roof tops. Guardian wolves are coveted, news of their whereabouts leaves them in more danger than you could imagine. Their past lives weren't all hunky dory I assure you. I've known Roman all his life. My advice to you would be to let him process."

"Thanks Henrik, but I don't suppose you were able to replace her?"

"I did, the Crystal dropped in the human town behind our borders. The street it showed held nothing but a few shops and an old motel."

"We really appreciate this and sorry if we've dragged you into trouble."

"Kid I swore an oath to the Alpha King to always protect his family so that's what I intent to do. Just do me a favour and don't get yourselves killed." How this man was able to make little jokes in a time like this was strange, but if truth be told a little light in this dark situation was more than welcomed.

After Henrik vanished, I stepped out of the cave to replace Roman. I knew there was no possible thing I could do to make any of this the slightest bit easier for him, but I didn't want him to think he was alone. I wouldn't pester him to open up because I knew once he was ready he would tell me.

As the sun began to set, I told Roman of Hades possible location and straight away he stood offering me his hand.

"Let's go get our pup." smiling up at him I nodded before taking his hand.

Navigating the woods was now harder than ever. We had to be extremely careful not to alert any of the scouts to our location. Though I almost screamed when a hand landed on my shoulder. "Daphne, why the fuck."

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you. Axel told me I'd replace you at the waterfall."

"Hm and you already knew where that was didn't you." Taking a deep breathe I looked to see if Roman had made it. The bridge was far too weak to hold us both at the same time. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to help. I know I have a lot of making up to do and helping you get back your pup I hope will help. After all it's the right thing to do."

'All clear love.' Hearing Roman's voice I shook my head at my sister and made my way across the bridge.

As if already knowing about the weakness of the bridge I watched as Daphne waited for me to be clear before running across.

"What are you doing here Daphne?" Roman didn't see her as a threat, but that didn't mean he was any happier to see her then I was.

"I already told your mate I'm here to help. Eric is doing all he can to steer the border patrol away. He did a last-minute shift change which should happen about... now." Daphne looked satisfied as she pointed to her watch.

"Fine but I need to know you are really with us. At some point we will come up against Lucille and the others, are you really going to choose us over them?"

"Cleo, we don't have time for this." Shushing Roman I gave Daphne the all-knowing look.

"Yes Cleo. If I could go back in time, I swear I wouldn't have taken their deal. I would have told them all where to go. Please give me this one chance to prove that to you."

"Fine but stay low and stay quiet." Nodding Daphne put her fingers to her mouth, sucked her lips in and pretended to zip them closed.

Once we had finally cleared the forest, we decided sticking to the shadows would be easier. That was until we heard the loud music and saw flashing lights coming from the direction we were headed. As we crept to the side of building, we found the streets packed with people.

"Of course! Follow me I've got an idea." Confused Daphne and I followed Roman down another street and into a shop using the back door.

"What are we doing in here?"

"Outside is Mardi Gras and as you can see people like to dress up for it. If we choose something from in here, we should blend right in. We'll still have to be careful but at least it will give us some cover. The street Hades was located on isn't far from here, so we need to replace him while hiding in plain sight."

"Hang on, isn't that something they celebrate in New Orleans?" I hated to admit it, but I agreed with Daphne this time.

"Traditionally yes, but the major of this town has been looking for a way to draw in more tourism using old myths and other states traditions."

"Ok, different, but who doesn't love a good carnival?"

"Really? We're here to get our pup back and put an end to Hades, not to join in the festivities. See this is exactly why you coming along was a bad idea." Shaking my head, I turned my back to her.

"Hey can a girl not joke! Look Cleo I do love to party, you know that. But I honestly came because..." placing my hand over her mouth I shushed her just as two shadowy figures stopped in front of the door and began to jiggle the handle.
