Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) -
Chapter 661
Beatrice was feeling unsure.
If Agnes was truly putting on an act, she certainly deserved an Oscar.
Beatrice asked, "What brings you here?"
Agnes had just returned to Willowbrook Town, so why was she back to the Capital so quickly?
Agnes began, "Well, I came for that $5 million deposit slip. I figured if you couldn't replace it, I'd swallow my pride and ask Laura for it. Or perhaps I could trade her something valuable I have."
Beatrice looked at the woman before her closely.
Could it be that Agnes really didn't know what happened to Laura?
Beatrice said, "You don't need to bother my mother. I found the deposit slip you want. I had to sneak it out, though. It's from a small, obscure Swiss bank. I couldn't even replace any information about it. It probably went bust. But it's just $5 million, I can't believe you're so hung up on it."
To Beatrice, $5 million was nothing.
But Beatrice knew that Agnes was always intensely possessive about anything her mother left behind.
No matter if it was five million or five hundred, she would move heaven and earth to get it back.
To be honest, Agnes had really changed since she last returned.
Sometimes, when Beatrice looked at Agnes' calm and cool face, she felt a pang of fear deep in her heart.
She had never been afraid of Agnes before.
Agnes took the check from Beatrice's hand.
As expected, it was a deposit slip from a Swiss bank for $5 million.
The payee was indeed Lundy.
It felt like a weight had been lifted from Agnes' heart.
Ever since her father's car accident was revealed to be a setup by Laura, Agnes had been more or less certain.
The death of her mother years ago must have had something to do with Laura.
Agnes had always thought that Alyssa had framed her mother with a bribe.
But now, Agnes was almost certain that everything might have been just a trap set by Laura.
A woman like Laura, how could she be satisfied with being a secret lover back then?
Agnes thought about many things in the past.
The details that were originally fuzzy were slowly unraveling in her mind.
Laura was the first to claim that Alyssa had framed her mother.
Laura seemed to know every detail about that incident.
On the contrary, when Agnes confronted Alyssa, all she got was remorse and regret.
She only admitted that the sum of money was hers, and her mother committed suicide because of it. But she never explained the cause and effect. She never personally admitted that she bribed officials to frame her mother.
Agnes was really careless at that time.
Because Alyssa admitted that her mother's death was related to her, Agnes firmly believed that Alyssa was the one who framed her mother.
With Laura fanning the flames on the side, she even let Agnes listen to a recording back then.
But thinking about it now, that recording might have been a deliberate setup by Laura, taking things out of context to mislead Agnes. Agnes only realized now.
Laura had set a trap back then, meticulously planning each step, leading her into it.
And Agnes, in her naivety, stepped right into it.
But it was Laura who bribed Lundy.
She was the one who framed her mother for bribery, leading to her downfall.
As for embezzlement, there must be some other story.
Agnes' fingers trembled slightly.
Beatrice, however, only thought Agnes was reminded of her own mother, feeling emotional at the sight of her belongings.
