Hello, Mr. Brent -
Chapter 94
Alan took out the key and opened the attic door.
Emily said in surprise, "I didn't expect you to have the key to the attic. Itseems that Mrs. Brent is very nice to you."
Alan smiled bitterly, turned on the light and said, "Let's count it! Iremember that set of crystal glasses was put in the cabinet in thesouthwest corner last year."
"Wow, so many things!" Emily opened her mouth in surprise. The roomwas full of beautiful things.
Although they were well arranged and some of the items were boxed, she was already shocked just by looking at the items placed outside."These are all unused, defective goods and this is not where the reallygood stuff is kept. I can't get the key to there either,” Alan smiledbitterly.
Emily had just envied him for being in Mrs. Brent's good graces, but shehadn't realized that he was just the one who looked after the roomwhere the unused items were kept. Now she felt embarrassed.
"I'm sorry!" Emily apologized.
Alan smiled and said, "It's okay. My status as an illegitimate son isalready awkward. It's my honour to live here.”
Emily pursed her lips and said, "Don't say that. You... Are part of theBrents. It's only natural that you should live here.”
Alan shook his head and smiled bitterly, "You must have heardsomething about me! But you absolutely did not know that if I hadbeen born that two days earlier, I would replace Franklin as the head ofthe entire family. At that time, my mother and Mrs. Brent were pregnantat the same time, and my mother's due date was still a week beforeMrs. Brent's. Mr. Brent said that whoever gave birth to his son would behis next wife. But I was born two days late when I should have beenborn earlier, and it was because of this that I live a completely differentlife. Originally, Mr. Brent wanted to get rid of me, because he couldn'thave his heir surrounded by a threat, but my mother took me and ranaway. By the time I was brought back again I was ten years old, Mr.Brent had wanted to have me drowned, and it was my mother whosaved my life and made me who I am now. But my mother died for me,and it is already a great honour for me to be alive. What could Ipossibly ask for? My mother told me when she died that I must live welland not hold a grudge against anyone and that I should live with herwill."
"What? Is that true?" Emily was horrified.
She had only seen this kind of thing in TV dramas, but she didn't expectit to happen in real life. Even a vicious tiger would not eat its cubs. Mr.Brent actually did such a crazy thing.
"You don't have to look at me with pity. Actually, I feel very good now,at least much better than the average person,” Alan said with a smile.Emily pursed her lips and sighed, not knowing what to say.
This was a privacy for the Brent. She could not say anything about it."Is it that cabinet? Let's see if anyone has put the missing cup back inthe cabinet?” Emily quickly changed the subject and opened a cabinetwith a crystal cup written on it.
Sure enough, there was a set of eleven crystal cups inside, which shouldhave been twelve. There was just one missing, just like Alan said.
"No! It's better to talk to Mrs. Brent,” Emily said.
Alan nodded, "I'll go and tell her! In case she asks how you knew aboutit again. I'll just say I accidentally saw the ledger and found out aboutit.”
"Thank you!" Emily said.
Alan smiled and said, "You're welcome. This is what I should do."
"It's so stuffy inside. Let's go out!” Emily wiped the sweat off herforehead.
The attic was really stuffy. It was probably because there were nowindows. It was only been a short while and she was already hot, herforehead was sweating and her clothes were getting soaked, so sheneeded to get some air.
Alan nodded and walked to the door before her. He opened the doorand was ready to go out.
But unexpectedly, he frowned and said in surprise, "Why can't the dooropen?"
"Ah?" Emily was surprised and hurriedly pulled herself.
She was strong enough, but she didn't pull back. It was clearly lockedoutside, so it couldn't be opened.
"It seems... Locked," Emily muttered.
Alan was startled and immediately pulled again. He gritted his teethand tried hard, but he couldn't open it.
Alan pulled a long face and he quickly said, "Someone must havesecretly locked it outside while we weren't looking."
"Ah, what should we do then? I'm dying of heat. He wouldn't want tosuffocate us here, would he? Don't you have a key? Try it with the key,”Emily said hurriedly.
Alan took out the key and tried it. It couldn't be opened at all. Hegritted his teeth and said, "It's locked from the outside. My key can't beopened at all. I'm afraid the person who locked the door didn't justwant to smother us to death.”
"Then what else does he want? Who's so wicked? That's too much,”Emily said angrily.
She started to replace her cell phone and realized that she didn't bring hercell phone when she came over.
"Did you bring your phone?" Emily asked anxiously in an instant.
Alan took his phone out and looked at it. He frowned and said, "Myphone is out of battery.”
Emily was speechless.
"What are we going to do now? We don't have a cell phone. We can'teven call for help.” Emily stomped her feet in anxiety.
After a moment of hesitation, she rushed to the door and slapped ithard, "Help! We're locked.”
"Be quiet.” Alan quickly covered her mouth and dragged her to theback.
Emily struggled out of Alan's arms, "What are you doing? Why don'tyou let me shout? How will anyone come to our rescue if I don'tshout?"
"If people knew we were here, what kind of gossip do you think therewould be about what happened between the two of us? It would behard for us to explain.” Alan asked.
Emily was stunned and quickly understood.
"We're just here to take a look at the crystal cup. We didn't do anything. There's not going to be any unspoken gossip between us,” Emily saidwith embarrassment.
She didn't even believe it when she said it. Mrs. Brent had been waitingfor Emily to make a mistake and this was a good opportunity for Mrs.Brent.
Alan smiled bitterly and said, "If Mrs. Brent knew, with her disgust foryou, she would definitely tell Franklin and exaggerate the details! Doyou think Franklin would believe you then? He already doesn't like me,and I'm afraid he'll be even angrier if he replaces out you're staying withme. I think that's why the man outside deliberately locked the door andlocked us inside.”
"But if we don't get help, how are we going to get out of here? Are wegoing to stay here forever?” Emily said hurriedly.
"I know this door.” Alan said, "This is an electronic security door. It is setup as an electronic door because of the fear of burglars. This door islocked by the person outside and opens automatically after threehours. We can only get out while that time is up.”
"Three hours?" Emily screamed.
She would faint from the heat if she stayed in here for another 30minutes, not to mention three hours.
It was an attic. Furthermore, it was so hot and there was no ventilation, just like a big steamer in here.
"There are now two options. The first is to go out now and we aremisunderstood to be doing something unseemly in the attic. Thesecond is to wait another three hours. It's your choice.” Alan said.
Emily thought for a moment, then sat down on the ground withgrievance and gritted her teeth, "Three more hours!"
Emily didn't want to be misunderstood. According to Mrs. Brent'scharacter, if Mrs. Brent found out about this matter, it would be widelyknown, and by then, Franklin would also know about it.
