Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 133
Xavier's POV
"Alpha?" Greyson knocked on my bedroom door.
I was busy getting ready for the fundraiser dinner and was about done.
"Yes?" I said, tying my bow tie.
"The car is ready," he said. "We need to leave now; otherwise, we will be late."
I nodded and finished tying the bow tie.
The trip to the fundraising gala was about an hour's drive from the pack territory, as it was held at a spacious five-star hotel, Silver Dunes.
I sighed as I sat back in my seat.
Greyson insisted on driving me to the event, and Kelly wanted to go with him.
I was sitting in the back, a bit bored, and my mind wandered off.
I was a bit disappointed to know that Kate had plans tonight, and I was curious to know with whom.
She didn't come back last night, and it made me restless.
I called Sophia first, and she told me that Kate had dinner reservations with Alpha William to sign the contract. That made me anxious and angry.
I then called Julia to replace out if Kate had returned to the King's Residence. I could hear in Julia's voice that something had happened, but she assured me that Kate was safely home.
Another breath left my lips. With everything that was going on, I had no choice but to ask Sophia to keep a close eye on Kate.
The parking area was busy when we arrived at the hotel, and Greyson, like always, quickly found a spot and parked the car.
I pulled my suit straight when I got out of the car and headed toward the entrance of the hotel.
My gaze moved over the luxurious reception and landed on the boards indicating in which hall the function would be held.
The hall was beautifully decorated, and so was every celebrity and woman invited to the function.
I rolled my eyes. Everyone was dressed up in the most dazzling jewels, secretly trying their best to outshine the next.
I spotted Kate walking among the crowd; her confident and high-spirited aura could be felt tens of meters away, making people unable to take their eyes off her.
She was the most dazzling pearl in the venue.
I internally growled, seeing every man's eyes locked on her, looking like hungry wolves ready to snatch away what was mine.
"What's the big deal?" Ms. McDonald spat at a woman next to her. "Kate might be beautiful, but she is a golden snake. Now she has released her poison into Alpha Black as well." Kate must have heard the old woman and calmly walked closer.
Being the golden pair, we were discussed quite often among the rich.
Looking toward the source of the voice, Kate happened to see Linzy McDonald rolling her huge eyes at her.
Linzy McDonald is the daughter of McDonald Enterprise, which has been hostile toward the King Group since the day I announced our engagement.
I sighed hopelessly.
Linzy was in love with me, and at one stage her family tried to negotiate a marriage contract between us.
I refused. I wanted true love and respect, not a lap dog who would obey my every word.
Kate gracefully walked towards old Ms. McDonald's, with the other ladies snickering behind their hands.
She looked at the group and smiled as she turned to Ms. McDonald and looked her up and down.
"I didn't expect a woman of such high status to teach her daughter to publicly humiliate another woman," she said.
That made Ms. McDonald even angrier.
"At least we value family, not like you locking up your aunt and cousin in prison. That's beyond my reach."
The woman laughed at Kate, but she stood her ground.
"Ms. McDonald," she calmly said, "you need to be careful with what you say. I hope you can produce evidence of your accusations. I will be asking my lawyer to come and see you so that we can chat about your evidence. You don't have a problem with that, do you?" I felt so proud of Kate; she stood her ground, not afraid of Ms. McDonald, and she spoke with confidence, without any sign of guilt.
The group became silent around them, and some even turned around and walked away.
Kate nodded, smiled, and excused herself, leaving the McDonald family shaking out of anger.
I silently watched Kate move around the hall.
"Alpha," Greyson said, handing me a drink, and he turned to see what I was looking at.
"She is trying to make more connections," Greyson said.
"Why not be at my side to introduce her?" I asked, feeling a bit hurt.
"She wants to prove to herself that she is capable of doing so without you," Greyson answered.
"But why?" I asked, "It would have been easier..."
"Ladies and gentlemen," the guest speaker announced, that the bidding was about to begin, and we walked toward our table, taking a seat.
The charity gala was in full swing, and the number plates were held one after another.
Kate sat at her table and tilted her head from time to time, raised her hand to cover her mouth, and yawned.
A smile reached the corners of my lips. She didn't expect the auction to be so boring.
"Okay, one million dollars!"
The hammer came down, closing the bid.
The next object was hidden behind a red cloth, and as soon as the cloth was removed, revealing a painting, Kate's eyes lit up.
The painting itself wasn't amazing; it had simple brushstrokes, looking like a kid had painted it, but the tone was calming and comfortable.
I could see that even Kate couldn't tell why she liked the painting, but something had drawn her to it.
"The bidding starts at $500,000," the auctioneer said.
Kate immediately perked up and raised her hand with No. 7 in the air.
"$500,000 to the lady in black," the auctioneer said, and Kate's face lit up.
"$700,000," Ms. McDonald perked her no. 21 board in the air.
Kate turned her head, seeing Ms. McDonald proudly raise her eyebrows at her as if she were determined to win.
"1 million," Kate announced.
"1.2 million," Ms. McDonald bid.
This went on for a while, and it aroused a heated discussion among bystanders.
Ms. McDonald's raised the bid by 200,000 every time until they stopped at 2 million.
Kate became silent, and I assumed that it was because she was silently giving up. The price for the painting was already higher than its actual value.
Just as the auctioneer was about to hit the hammer, I lifted my board into the air, silencing the hall.
