Katherine's POV

"Kate is back!" Erika's voice echoed through the quiet mansion from the living room area as I entered the foyer.

It was already after 9 p.m., and I was tired after the long day at work.

John left around 5 p.m. for the dinner appointment with Xavier, and I used the opportunity to go through some of the company policies.

I was amazed that most of the company policies weren't obeyed or enforced, which, for obvious reasons, gave me ammunition to create more uproar among the employees.

I headed to the kitchen, made myself a sandwich, and passed through the living room.

I was shocked to see a man standing with a tape measure in his hands.

What the hell? At this time of night?

I took a peek at what was going on and found Erika, standing in the center of the room, surrounded by people taking measurements.

I shook my head in disbelief and turned to leave.

"How was your day?" John asked when he spotted me.

Erika turned her gaze toward me, a mocking smile playing on her lips.

"It was good," I answered, smiled, and turned toward the stairs.

"That's not what I heard!" Erika said, rolling her eyes.

Good! It seemed like my plan was working. I wonder if the employees would dare post it online...

"Kate," Rose called, "when you have freshened up, come back down. The tailor needs to take your measurements..."

"It's late," I stated. "I have work in the morning..."

"But the tailor is one of the best..." Rose argued.

"Aunt Rose," I cut her off, and gestured for her to stop, "make an appointment for me with the tailor. I am tired and I am going to bed. Good night!"

With that, I rushed toward the stairs, leaving the group of people stunned.

Once in my room, I dug my phone out of my bag, opened my Instagram account, and quickly scanned through the comments.

A smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I read through some comments about me and found a few photos of where I yelled at Sarah and some of the other staff.

I sighed. If only the employees knew I was only creating havoc to reveal who murdered my parents and their beloved CEO and Alpha.

I dropped the phone on my bed and headed toward the bathroom to freshen up.

I drew myself a bubble bath, got in, and laid back, closing my eyes.

This is heaven!

The irritating sound of my cell phone ringing startled me, and I got up bewildered and spilled bathwater on the floor.

"Dammit!" I moaned, disappointed, seeing the mess I made on the floor. I must have fallen asleep.

I sighed, feeling the water had run cold, and got out.

My phone started to ring again, and I hurried and grabbed my bathrobe.

"Bloody hell, keep your pants on!" I yelled at the phone from the bathroom, "I am coming!"

The phone stopped screaming the second I made it to my bed.

I picked it up, unlocked it, and saw several missed calls coming from Xavier's number.

"F*ck!" I swore and immediately called him back.

On the second ring, Xavier answered.

"Now you take my calls!" Xavier snapped over the phone.

"I fell asleep in the bath," I explained and suppressing a yawn.

Xavier turned quiet for a few seconds, and I wondered what he was up to. He never calls me this late.

"Xavier?" I called over the phone.

"Xavier?"

"Xavier, are you still there?" I yelled over the receiver out of panic.

"Yes?" Xavier replied, and I sighed, relieved.

"Was there something you needed?" I asked.

"No," he answered.

"Then why were you looking for me so urgently?" I asked, getting irritated.

"Come out," he replied.

"Where to?" I asked and walked to the window, taking a peek at the outside. It was dark outside, and I couldn't see Xavier. "I can't see you."

"Open your balcony door..." Xavier ordered, and cut the call.

My heart fluttered nervously in my chest. What the hell is Xavier up to?

I pulled the heavy curtains away and unlocked the glass balcony door.

My gaze snapped toward the movement at the darker ends of the balcony, seeing Xavier casually lying against the balcony railing with his arms crossed over his chest, smirking... My heart skipped a beat...

Goddess, this handsome man looked more like a Greek god than a business executive... My gaze wandered down the lines of Xavier's body, and I licked my lips unconsciously at the delicious man.

It was the first time I saw Xavier in casual wear, and even though he was dressed in a pair of plain blue jeans and black shoes, the white shirt was what caught my attention. The material stretched over his huge, broad chest, revealing his beautifully crafted chest and rock-hard abs. Delicious!

My mind took a wild detour as it threw images of me running my fingers over those beautiful sculpture parts...

I moved my gaze slowly toward Xavier's face, seeing that the dim balcony light created a mysterious look on his face.

"Mr. Black, this is a surprise!" I said, as soon as I could replace my voice.

"I almost went out searching for you!" Xavier barked, annoyed, and I took a step back.

"Seriously, Xavier?" I sighed, frustrated. "I was totally safe in my room. I just fell asleep in the bath. You can calm down now! And besides, I know you can track me! If I was in any real danger, you would have saved me already..."

Xavier shifted his weight onto both of his legs and went upright. Then he took two long steps and froze before me. His eyes were pitch black, and it seemed like Ray had taken control of Xavier's body. His jaw was strained as his gaze moved over my face.

My heartbeat escalated, and my breath hitched. Xavier's scent was driving my insides to mush. He scrunched his eyebrows together, took a whiff of the air around me, smiled, and then passed me, leaving me outside while he marched straight into my room and took a seat on the sofa.

I turned around, bewildered, and looked at Xavier, who was now sitting on the sofa with a smirk on his face. What the hell was wrong with him?

I slowly walked back into my room and closed the balcony door behind me.

"Don't mind me; make yourself at home," I said sarcastically.

Xavier pinned his gaze on me, and another smile formed on his lips.

"What are you looking at?" I asked.

I regretted the question the second it escaped my lips, and my gaze followed where Xavier's eyes were pinned.

"They are just as perky as I remembered!" Xavier teased.

"F*ck!" I moaned, remembering that I didn't have any undergarments on and that the robe was basically see-through.

My face flushed, and I turned on my heels, grabbed my undergarments, and rushed back into the bathroom.

I got dressed at the speed of light and made my way out of the bathroom.

Xavier smiled as soon as he saw me and clapped his hands.

More people streamed into my room.

"W-w-what's going on?" I asked, shaken.

Where did all these people come from? How the hell did they get to the balcony?

"This Ashley," Xavier introduced a girl with short brown hair. "She is a well-known fashion designer from Europe. She is here to take measurements for your new dress."

Before I could say anything, Ashley started to take my measurements.

"What dress?" I asked after I got over the shock.

Xavier lifted my chin, and sparks erupted at his touch. He took my left hand in his.

I closed my eyes, trying to control my breathing.

"For the engagement party," Xavier answered as a matter of fact and turned my left hand.

"An engagement party?" I asked, feeling a bit annoyed, "Haven't you announced our engagement already? Why do we need to announce it again?"

I pulled back my hand, and Xavier returned to the sofa.

Xavier snapped his fingers, and just as soon as the group entered, they left my room, leaving me and Xavier alone.

"John is going to set us up," Xavier said seriously. "They are planning to go public with the engagement party, where they will replace a way to make sure I propose to Erika, and not you... When that happens..."

With Xavier out of the picture, John will have free will with my life, and he can then easily replace a way to have me executed...

"Then why did you agree to the engagement party in the first place?" I asked bitterly. "He is obviously happy about smearing Erika off on you. As long as you don't fall for her charms, she will not be able to succeed." Xavier narrowed his eyes and faintly smiled.

"If she was able to seduce me as you did, she might have had a chance, but I have no interest in her... She is not my mate!" He said and moved his finger over my cheek.

I shivered noticeably when his fingers touched me, and a smile formed on his lips.

"I am in love with you, not her..." he said seriously, and his blue eyes were pleading with me to accept him as my mate.

"It's only the..." I started to argue, but he cut me off.

"It is more than that!" Xavier snapped, "And I wish you could see that!"

Xavier let go of my face, took a step away from me, turned around, grabbed his keys, and stalked out the door, leaving me and the room cold and empty...
