Xavier's POV

She said yes, she said yes, she said yes!

Excitement bubbled up inside me, and Ray howled happily inside my mind.

I couldn't believe it; Kate just agreed to give us a chance.

I glanced down and lifted her chin so she could face me.

Her forest-green eyes carried worry, yet there was something in them that calmed my heart.

"She is afraid," Ray said.

"I will prove her otherwise... She should never doubt our love for her!"

I smiled down at her, and she returned the gesture.

"May I?" I asked.

Yet, before she could answer, Ray took control, and my lips met hers. She didn't fight it, and she returned the kiss.

Her delicious strawberry lips pulled me in, and her intoxicating scent blinded my senses. Oh, Goddess, this child of yours will be the death of me.

I carefully pulled Kate closer to me, feeling her pitied, soft body pressing against my chest.

Oh, this was heaven!

I took the chance to deepen the kiss, and miraculously, Kate allowed me.

Was she giving in to me?

"You better not screw this up!" Ray growled in my mind.

"How can I?" I said, "She is so perfect!"

"Uhm," someone said, clearing their throat behind us, and we broke apart, looking guilty like two teenagers caught in the act.

Kate's cheeks flushed red, yet I couldn't help but feel mine turning red too.

"Evening, Alpha," Greyson's grandmother greeted me, looking a bit embarrassed about interrupting us.

If it was any other person, I would have been a bit pissed, but Edna was the closest thing I could call family and mother.

"Evening, Edna," I greeted, looking toward the pitied gray-headed woman. She was much smaller than Kate, but what she lacked in height she made up for with impeccable patience and a heart of gold. "Everything is ready," she informed me, and she turned her gaze toward Kate, smiling.

"Edna, this is Katherine King, the girl I have told you of..." I introduced Kate. "Kate, this is Edna, Greyson's grandmother."

Edna walked closer and took Kate's hands into hers. She shifted her head from side to side, reading Kate, like Greyson usually does to me. The only difference is that Edna could sense things and not only read people's emotions. Edna's dark brown eyes suddenly sparkled out of excitement. She knew something that no one else did.

"I wish you well," Edna eventually said to Kate, and a small smile followed on the old woman's lips. "I am glad Alpha Xavier found someone as pretty as you."

Kate's cheeks turned even redder, and she dropped her gaze out of embarrassment.

"Alpha, better look after you! Or..." Her words trailed off as she turned her gaze back to me.

"She is not human." Edna mind-linked me and raised an eyebrow.

I, in return, scrunched my eyebrows in confusion, asking the silent question.

"I can feel her wolf." Edna explained, getting to the point, "She is powerful."

Is that why she survived the torture?

Is that why she survived her family's mistreatment?

My gaze slowly turned to Kate. She was looking at us with confusion in her eyes.

Did she hear Edna's comment?

"Edna!" Roland's voice sounded from somewhere in the mansion, and Edna turned her gaze toward the double doors. "Excuse me, Alpha, I had better see why Roland is looking for me; why he can't mind linking me is still beyond me."

The small woman turned on her heels, rushed back toward the double doors, and disappeared into the mansion.

"That was intense," Kate commented, hearing how she released a breath.

"Why?" I asked, shifting my head to the side, "What happened?"

"No, nothing," she said, shaking her head, and she looked up, replaceing my gaze.

"She saw or felt something," Ray said, getting excited.

Ray had previously tried to connect with Kate's wolf, but he couldn't. It was as if she didn't exist.

I was pretty sure Kate was a wolf. I wasn't sure why her wolf was hiding or if something else was keeping her from taking the wolf's form.

Yet, when Kate got angry or emotional, glimpses of the creature inside her would come forward, but not enough that Kate would notice. "Come on," I said, taking Kate's hand, "let us get ready for our dinner date."

Kate nodded her head, yet she acted a bit distracted as she made her way back into the mansion.

I led her toward her room and opened the door.

Kate's eyes widened when she saw the interior.

"This... wow!" She said this as she walked in and saw the huge king-sized bed in the center of the room.

"I am glad you like it," I said, walking toward the bathroom and opening the door.

"You can freshen up in there if you like, and..." I turned around, replaceing Kate standing at the window, overlooking the gardens.

"Kate?" I called, feeling a bit worried.

"Yes?" She said this and turned her gaze toward me, smiling.

"Is something the matter?" I asked, taking a step toward her.

"No, no," she said, shaking her head, "all is wonderful. I am a bit overwhelmed with everything, that's all."

"Overwhelmed? Why?" I asked.

"This..." she gestured inside the room, "that..." she gestured outside, "it is just so perfectly beautiful..."

I wasn't sure if I understood correctly. Kate grew up in a home of luxury. Why was this any different?

"Maybe because of the atmosphere?" Ray commented again.

It might be.

"So, you were about to show me?"

"Yes, the bathroom." I took Kate's hand and we went through the rest of the room, then handed her the bag I left in the foyer. "Kelly picked up a few things," Xavier said.

"She went through my closet?"

"No," I answered, "she went shopping with my credit card."

"Oh?" She gasped with wide eyes.

"Uhm, yes, and I am not sure what she picked for you." I turned toward the closet and opened the closet door.

"There are dresses that have been made for your size, and..."

"Xavier," Kate said, stopping me and walking to my side.

There was a gentle smile on her lips, and as she took my hands in hers, she must have noticed that I was busy panicking. "Thank you," she said, leaving a butterfly kiss on my lips.

When she pulled away from me, a taunting smile appeared on her lips.

"I had better get dressed for this dinner date," she said, winking. "The new man in my life wouldn't be too pleased if I was late!"
