Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 68
Katherine's POV
I couldn't sleep. I was tossing and turning throughout the night.
The photo I had taken from my home was now standing next to me on the bedstand, reminding me of my task.
I sighed. I just couldn't get my mind to relax.
John has hurt me so much in the last couple of months that pretending to be a happy family isn't needed anymore.
I got out of bed and walked toward the window, seeing the moon peeking her head out from behind the mountains. Another sad breath escaped my lips.
I need some fresh air. I got up, grabbed my pillow and blanket, and quietly left my room.
I headed toward the swing in the garden.
A smile played at the corner of my lips as the quiet sound of the forest surrounded me. It was way different from my home.
I covered myself with a blanket and made myself comfortable, listening to the sounds of the birds and insects around me.
The swing gently moved back and forth, and I gradually fell asleep.
It was the first time in months that my mind wandered into dreamland, where I actually had a dream and not a nightmare.
In my dream, it felt like a pair of hands lifted me gently, and I floated in midair for a while before I was carefully set down. The warmth inside the dream made me feel accepted and loved.
It was only late in the morning when I eventually gained consciousness. I looked at the time and decided that I would skip work today.
My gaze moved around the room I was in, and the last thing I could remember was that I was on the swing.
I guess Xavier must have carried me to bed.
The door of the room was gently pushed open, and Xavier walked in, dressed in casual wear.
"Good morning, sleepy head," Xavier said, taking a seat next to me on the bed and handing me a cup of coffee.
"Thanks," I said, shifting my head to the side and scrunching my eyebrows together. I was surprised that Xavier didn't go to work today.
"Come on, get up, and have some brunch with me," he said. "The Accountant is on her way to giving you your first lesson."
"Accountant?" I asked, confused, yet Xavier ignored me and walked toward my closet and, without hesitation, took out a pair of blue jeans and a white shirt.
"Come on," he urged, "we have many things to do today."
Xavier set my clothes on my dressing table, gave me one more look, and left.
I lazily got up, headed to the bathroom, did my business, and got dressed.
When I was satisfied with my appearance, I found Xavier waiting for me in the dining room with a newspaper in his hand, looking at the stock market.
Black Umbrella's shares had gradually recovered after yesterday's photos, but the King Group was still stuck at the same price.
After a while, Greyson entered and advised Xavier that the accountant had arrived.
With the sound of high heels, Xavier nodded, wiped his mouth, and looked toward me.
"Are you done eating?" He asked.
"Yes, thank you!" I said, "Compliments to the chef!"
Xavier's eyes lightened up, yet he didn't comment on the food further.
"Come on," he said, taking my hand.
I followed Xavier down the corridor to his office, and when he pushed the door open, I saw a woman with long, dark hair and professionally dressed. "Kate, this is Sophia, one of my accountants," Xavier introduced us.
Sophia found my gaze and smiled brightly, then waved at me and politely said, "Hi Luna, it's an honor to finally meet you."
I responded with a faint smile, feeling a little uncomfortable.
Sophia was a very attractive girl; she had big, clear blue eyes, full red lips, and a beautiful body, and I felt a bit self-conscious.
"I am one of Alpha's many accountants. I am responsible for the financial side and contract proofreading," Sophia said, giving me a small smile.
I internally sighed. Accounting wasn't what I wanted to do with my life; now I needed to learn it just so that I could take care of my family.
"Here," Sophia handed me some reports, "there is some data that needs to be looked at from a different angle, and it is necessary that you compare that data to the previous year."
Sophia pointed to an example on the page, then explained the data. My mind wanted to explode with all the information she gave me.
After a while, I understood what Sophia was saying, and I could now understand why the data was incorrect.
Maybe I could ask Sophia for help?
"Sophia," I said, "would you mind looking at the data I have? I don't quite understand it; maybe you can tell me what is missing?" Sophia shook her head.
"I know about the data you are talking about; Alpha Black did inform me, yet it is not my place to intervene in the financial affairs of the King Group. If there is any problem in the future with the project we will be working on, I will be able to assist. I am truly sorry. Ms. Kate, I can't help you this time. You will need to investigate your replaceing yourself."
I nodded in understanding.
It would have been helpful if she could have helped me, but maybe in the long run it was better. The board might think I was busy giving out trade secrets, and then everything that I worked so hard to know would come tumbling down.
I carefully listened to what Sophia had to say and got a rough idea of how everything worked and where everything fit into the major puzzle.
In only a day, I knew how the building blocks of an enterprise worked.
"Luna," Sophia said, and I lifted my gaze at her. "This is the contract with all the details and project responsibility that Black Umbrella had drafted for the King Group. Please have a look and see if you are happy with the information and if you can replace any problems so that I can correct them."
After Sophia left, Xavier brought me one more contract, and my eyes widened out of shock.
Does he expect me to go through them now?
Xavier must have seen my panicked state and chuckled, amused.
"Come on, that's enough for one day. Let's get some rest."
Xavier took my hand, and we excitedly studied.
"Go freshen up," he said as we stopped at my bedroom door. "I will meet you in a few minutes." "Where are we going?"
"You will see!"
