We’re in our own world, in the year 2015, the same world we’ve been living in since the dawn of time. The same world where supernatural creatures live with us… Their existence has long been hidden from us. Werewolves, a legend to frighten children, actually exist, transformed into a legend so as not to frighten adults – rather ironic when you think about it… These strange beings hide from our naive eyes. A werewolf possesses two souls, two souls for two bodily envelopes: a human soul, a human envelope, a lupine soul, a lupine envelope. The human soul controls both envelopes most of the time. Occasionally, however, the wolf that sleeps in them wakes up, especially when the moon is full. Now, plunge into the eyes, the soul, of a young she-wolf.

I was preparing for battle, to defend our lands and our honor. Our enemies, the descendants of the line of Cain, had declared war on us by disemboweling our Alpha’s female five days ago. What’s more, if the information was correct, she was his soul-sister; in other words, if he didn’t kill the entire pack of Cain’s descendants today, he would die in battle… The once proud descendant of Abel was now a shadow of his former self. His face was hollow with gauntness and dark circles, his complexion was dull, and he seemed to have gained a dozen years in just a few days. His first mate had reported that the man was no longer eating or sleeping. If you didn’t know what a soulmate was: it’s your other half, the person who completes you. When you’re with your soulmate, you’re on cloud nine. It’s as if the wolf was created to replace his soulmate. That’s why, if your soul-mate were to die, the pain would be so great that most would not be able to resist the idea of rejoining her as soon as possible… Such psychological heartbreak, when it doesn’t kill, drives the grieving wolf or she-wolf into madness. And that was the case with our Alpha…

Well, that’s what they say in the cubs’ tales. Personally, I only half believe it… I resumed my train of thought when a soldier blew a foghorn in the distance, signaling that the warriors should assemble for battle. I was going to war with my clan. Of course, I’d disguised my voice using the technique my father had taught me, because only males were allowed to go to war…

But I wanted to fight to avenge the death of my alpha female. She was like the mother I never had. I’d been told that the murderer was none other than Ares, the Alpha Master, the most powerful and cruel of all the Alphas. It was said about him that he wanted to kill his soulmate because he thought love was a weakness and made people weak… He must have been as ignorant as he was evil to think that…

We had been walking for a few hours when we stopped to let the scouts sniff out the suspicious smell: the smell of our enemies… Our Alpha was advancing rapidly, ready to kill anything that dared to move. The smell became much stronger. We could almost picture their bodies, their movements… We were all beginning to turn into wolves. The transformation was extremely painful. As if all your bones were breaking into little pieces… Not to mention the clothes that tore to shreds with each transformation. My wolf was white and gray. She was small, but still had razor-sharp fangs.

We reached a clearing before nightfall. Across the way, a few hundred meters away, lay Ares and his pack, all stockier and stronger than us, and armed to the teeth. But then something strange happened. Ares, instantly recognizable with his gigantic, black-and-brown wolf coat, who was usually described as proud and fearless, looked unsettled in front of us, as if he were… afraid? He was looking at our pack and stopped on me. I lowered my head and changed the color of my eyes from blue-gray to brown. Yet another camouflage technique among those my father had taught me. When I raised my head, Ares was still looking at me, but he looked away, trying to channel his troops, who were getting excited behind him. Then, all at once, Ares shouted his attack, so we too ran to retaliate as best we could. The confrontation was terrible, the b***d was already flowing freely, mine were falling on all sides, while I had just finished off my third enemy. I used my smaller size and agility to turn my opponent’s strength against him. Suddenly, I found myself face to face with Ares. I didn’t think any further and jumped on his side. I was about to bite him in the jugular when I was violently thrown back a few meters by a powerful kick. Ares lunged at me with a predatory gait, baring his teeth, but was stopped by Tom, my alpha, who scratched his right eye. Furious, Ares jumped on him and knocked him onto his stomach, then stood over him to keep him from getting up. Tom looked at me.

Run away! As far as you can, don’t turn around, that’s an order! And above all, don’t… he shouted with a last breath.

Too late, his sentence died with him. I followed his order, fleeing as far as I could. My mind was in turmoil and I had tears in my eyes. I couldn’t believe that the man who had been so strong for me had only been able to cut the Alpha of the opposing pack superficially, while Ares had only had to tighten his fangs on his neck to wipe him off the face of our world forever… I swore that sooner or later… I’d have his killer’s hide.
