Xavier’s POV

I g*****d as I woke up with a huge headache. What the hell happened? The last time I had a headache was when I was a teenager. Drinking the alcohol for werewolves, by the way, isn’t as fun as the morning after.

I open my eyes to see that I’m in Zay’s office. Zay’s office? What am I doing here? The last thing I remember was-

Celeste.

I push myself off of the bed, wincing at how sore my entire body feels. Even my hands and feet hurt. f*****g hell. What did I do?

It didn’t matter, I need to replace Celeste. Inside I was hoping, begging, that Celeste had been found and she was upstairs right now. I was hoping that she was sleeping or hoping that she was thinking about what to have for breakfast. She would probably have pancakes and bacon, it’s her favorite. then she would come in here and complain about how I missed breakfast and then she would bring me a plate. She would have to apologize because she ate all of my bacon, but she wouldn’t really mean it. She would feel no guilt at all.

That would happen any minute. She would be here soon.

“Xavier,” I looked up to see Zay. Her eyes held worry and sadness as she looked at me. “You’re up.”

“Where’s Celeste?” I tried to look around her, hoping to see her. I looked back at Zay. Her eyes started to fill with tears and I could feel my chest tightening. No. . .

“I’m so sorry Xavier. Josh nor any of the other trackers could replace her. I’m sorry.”

“Zay this isn’t funny,” my voice was starting to shake. I need her. I don’t think I could go through life without her. I need her here. “Where is she?”

“Maybe you should lay back do-“

“No!” I lost control for a second and next thing I know the table that was by the bed was flipped over, the water pitcher that was on it was on the floor with the water going everywhere.

“Xavier, lay back down. It isn’t a request, it’s an order. I don’t care if you’re my Alpha. I am your friend, basically your sister. Yes Celeste is missing but we’ll replace her. I know you won’t give up on her just like I would never give up on Kaleshia.” I looked at her. I was back in control, but my wolf was still growling.

“You don’t understand. She’s in danger with those rogues. They have her and they could be seriously hurting her. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but she isn’t strong. She isn’t strong,” my voice cracked as I felt tears fill my eyes. I refused to cry. I have to be strong if I want to get her back.

“Do you think I’m not worried? She is my friend and my Luna. I am so worried and so mad. I’m mad at the rogues for taking her, I’m mad at every single tracker for not being able to replace her, and I’m mad at myself. I sent her off to go help the other injured alone. Do you hear me? Alone. Right after a rogue attack. I was so stupid and now here you are, going insane.”

“I’m not going insane!” I growled, my wolf howling inside of me. He didn’t like that we were being disrespected. Usually, he didn’t care about Zay saying such things, since she is like family but he was going insane. I was losing control. If I lost control, my wolf would come out, and he would go insane. So I was technically going insane.

“Xavier, you really should lay back down. You did quite a number on yourself.” I looked at her with a question in mind.

“Why did I black out?” Zay sighed.

“Lay down and I’ll tell you.” I rolled my eyes at her. I needed to be out looking for Celeste. I laid down, knowing that Zay really won’t tell me until I do as she says. I laid back down, but then I leaned against the headboard, flinching. I didn’t want to fully lay down. Zay sighed in defeat.

“Answer my question, because I need to speak to Josh soon. I don’t want to lose any hope of a trail.” Zay sighed but bit her tongue.

“When a wolf loses control it can make them go insane. I’m trying to stop that from happening. When that happens, the person dies but the wolf lives on. That’s a true rogue, when they truly lose all control. It’s rare, but when losing a mate in any way, it happens. That almost happened to you and I think that, since your wolf could still sense Celeste out there, he tried to stop. He tried to completely shut down. It worked enough to stop you, but you blacked out.” I nodded in understanding.

“I need to replace her Zay. I-I love her Zay.” She smiled sweetly at me.

“I know Xavier. And I’m sorry Xavier. So sorry. This happened because of me, but I promise you that I’ll help you replace her in any way.” I gave her a small smile. I don’t think I can manage anything else right now.

“Then please, give me some ideas. I am still going to speak to Josh, maybe there is a way to track Malum, but besides that I’m stuck. I’ll take any idea that could possibly help me out. Please Zay, I’m desperate.” She looked in thought for a minute.

“Well I have had this one idea since Josh came to tell me that they lost the trail.”

“What is it?” She smirked.

“Those rogues that were in the cellars, no one got them out during the attack. They’re still down in the cellars.”

“And?”

“Your wolf is very angry right now. Why don’t you go see the rogues. Ask them where she could be. If they don’t answer,” she shrugged, “you can always let your anger out.” I smirked.

“Zay, sometimes you are just so brilliant.”
