Millie glanced at the nurse outside the door and frowned. Was this typical of the Stringers? Maybe it was. Why else would Sean have been abroad for so many years?

Millie approached the bedside and tucked the blanket around Sean. He was still on an IV drip, and his heart rate appeared stable.

She thought about checking the wound on his stomach. However, with no one else around, she felt lifting his blanket and shirt was inappropriate.

After thinking it over, Millie dismissed the idea. Instead, she sent a text to Marvin.

Millie: “Please bring some anti–inflammatory cream when you come to the hospital.”

Marvin: “Okay.”

Millie pouted at Marvin’s reply and asked, “You rascal, why are you so cold to me?”

But Marvin didn’t respond. Displeased, Millie sent another message, “So now you’re ignoring me, huh?”

She was well aware that Marvin was upset.

Suddenly, Sean coughed, causing Millie to look up and see him staring at her.

“You’re awake!” Millie immediately placed the back of her hand on his forehead. He was still running a

fever.

Sean cleared his throat, feeling as though it was on fire.

“Why did you jump into the sea when you were already hurt?” Millie’s tone carried a hint of reproach.

Sean mustered a weak smile and asked, “Would you have wanted me to watch you die there?”

Millie was momentarily speechless. It made sense. “So, we’re even now.”

She had saved his life, and now he had returned the favor.

Sean looked into Millie’s eyes and hummed in agreement. “Yes, we’re even now.”

After a while, he lowered his gaze. As Millie poured him a glass of water, she heard him muttering, “Why didn’t he save you?”

“What?” Millie asked. She couldn’t make out what he said; his voice was barely audible.

Sean looked up and repeated, “Why did Winston save Joanna instead of you?”

“Oh,” Millie replied softly and added, “He likes Joanna, so of course, he’d save her first. I’m nothing to him.

“You loved him for years and even married him. Though you’re divorced now, doesn’t he feel anything at all? Do you-” Sean’s tone became increasingly urgent, and he started coughing.

Millie quickly handed him a glass of water. “Drink some water and don’t worry about me.”

But Sean didn’t accept it. He asked in disbelief, “When did he become so heartless?”

Millie lowered her head. She didn’t know either. Winston was different back in high school. However, everything changed after university and the kidnapping incident.

“I noticed yesterday that you and Joanna have identical scars on your backs,” Sean suddenly remarked.

Millie looked up in surprise. Sean could tell what had caught her off guard.

“Your tattoo is beautiful, but it can’t hide the scar underneath, especially not one that severe.”

A faint smile played on Millie’s lips as she took a sip of water, saying nothing. Her silence was a clear sign of her resignation.

“How did you get that scar?” Sean asked.

Millie met his gaze and answered seriously, “It happened when I saved him.”

Sean was even more astonished. “Saved him?”

Was Millie referring to Winston?

“Yes, it was the year Winston was kidnapped. I risked my life to save him on my own,” Millie explained, touching her back. “The kidnapper slashed me, weighed me down with a rock, and tried to drown me…”

Sean was stunned beyond words. “What? It was you?”
