The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 84
It was the second week of trial. Last week was the first, and it went on the average rating. Out of the ten houses, Mia send out the letters requesting their witnessing, only five responded with an acceptance. It was positive, and Mia tried to replace two more witnesses to make up at least seven. On the first day of the trial last week, one of the five witnesses didn't show up to the court. Lord Zander and his household had fled to the kingdom of Jade for fear of their lives, according to the news report she received. This brought the King's witness list to four. They needed at least three more witnesses.
Mia visited her father and requested that he testified for the alpha king, but Jobe told her he couldn't. He turned her down but couldn't tell her why he did. She felt disappointed, but held nothing against him. She hugged and told him to take care of himself. As she tried to leave, Jobe took hold of her hand, his face filled with fear and concern. He told her to be careful. She felt very negative energy from him and that sparked her suspicion, but when she asked, he told her not to worry. He kissed her forehead and told her to stay safe.
"What are you doing?" Xavier asked when he woke up and found her not in bed. She sat at the table, writing and focused.
This was now her pattern.
"Writing letters to the houses in the kingdom and asking for witnesses for your trial."
He pulled himself up to sit down in bed. "You should come and sleep, Mia."
She shook her head and rubbed her forehead. "I can't when your reign is at stake and how can you sleep?" she demanded, glancing up at him with a raised brow.
"Because this is beyond my control."
"And we give up? What other plans do you have in case you lose your throne?"
He stayed silent for a while, then released a defeated sigh. "I don't know."
"Do you even want to fight this? Do you even want to win this?" she sounded pissed off. First, her father refuse to bear witness and now her husband couldn't care less. She rose to her feet and turned away from him.
He takes himself off the bed and steps towards her. "I want to win this, but this is the trial by witnesses. Most people don't want to witness for me because they'll never stop seeing me the way they always have." She turned to him. "That's not true. You had four witnesses on your corner during last week's trial. That shows people believe in you."
"I sent off twenty letters to the royal families around the capital after the trial of witness began, Mia. None responded, and the few that did, declined. Also, Elliott successfully discredited two of our four witnesses." His voice tried to mask the pain as he spoke, but Mia saw right through it. "I know you're trying to help, but the odds aren't in my favour and the people don't really care about me. The only one that actually cares about me is you. I am grateful for all the help you've given so far, but I've settled my case with fate." She slapped him across the face, and when he opened his mouth, to speak, she did it again, "I didn't marry a coward. I married a man who didn't give up because everything was first difficult. This was a man willing to risk everything just to have the kingdom he wants fought to be worthy of. The man that would challenge even the goddess and not back down from a fight. That's the man I want to see. I want to see the alpha king, and this isn't him." She said and stormed out of the room.
She spent hours of the night outside, staring at the sky and counting stars. She realised doing this helped calm her nerves. It took the thought of everything, from Xavier's stubbornness to her father's safety and what lay ahead of them. They entered this agreement many months ago with one purpose: to achieve their aims. Xavier would become king and she'd leave Wahala with an abundance of riches. A lot had happened so far. She had fallen in love with the alpha king and him with her. This had blurred the lines to a lot of things and yes, for a moment she had contemplated changing her mind, but this trial threatens everything about her freedom and his reign.
She heard a small howl from behind and she turned around to replace the alpha king in his wolf form, standing not so far away.
She felt angry when she left the room earlier, but she no longer did. She stoops and beckoned him to come closer. He hurried over to her, and she wrapped her arms protectively around him. She felt tiny, yet she affected him and calmed him down. She was his muse, and he was hers.
She rubbed her hand over his black furry back and he purr into her ear, little whimpers escaping it.
"Everything will be fine."
Xavier didn't transform back to human that night. She didn't ask him to. He felt comfortable in his form and that's all that mattered.
When her lashes fluttered, she saw that Xavier had shifted back into his human form and laid next to her, naked.
He slept soundly next to her. His brows pulled together and a little snore left his slightly parted lips with every exhale. He looked breathtaking even in his sleep, and the sight was perfect.
Her hands lifted to his face, and she moved the lock of hair aside before stroking it.
His lashes fluttered, and his green eyes settled on hers. She gulped and smiled at him.
"Good morning," she leaned in and kissed his lips before running off the bed.
The abruptness of the act startled him. "What are you doing?" he moaned out in a thick, sleepy voice.
"Perhaps I've been asking for witnesses in all the wrong places."
"Okay... so you have a place in mind to ask for witnesses?"
She nodded vigorously, "The maidens' Court. Some of those women are royals and most of them are loyal to me. They could come in and testify or even sway their husbands in our favour." "And you just thought of this now. How?"
"I don't know, it just clicked after I woke up. Instead of sending the letters to the men, I will send them to the women."
"You think it would work?" he asked, getting off the bed.
Her head lifted, and her mouth dropped open and the naked sight of him. She couldn't drag her eyes away, despite trying to for a few times. She wanted him too much. It felt insane.
Xavier saw her eyes on him, and they didn't leave his body. They travelled down, and they remained on him. Her want for him was obvious. He should have probably put something on, but he forgot he had nothing on. Now her lustful eye wanted him. "You're such a distraction." She groaned and tore her eyes away from him, her cheeks heating. "Please put something on."
He bowed his head. "Yes, your majesty."
The letters were ready a few hours later, and Mia sent them through the guards with hopes for nothing but a positive response.
