The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 90
When Mia woke up the next day, she didn't replace Xavier in bed. He had left, and her eyes strained. She wondered how long she had been asleep while she turned around in his bed. The smell of Xavier lingered on the sheets and in the room and last night her senses were foggy, but now she could take in his manly smell along with his scent. She missed this, and it was just two days of being apart. She wanted to stay all day here, but she knew reality wouldn't let her have that.
She sighed and pulled herself up to sit down, the memories of the night before slipping into her head and she remembered why she came back to Xavier's room. There was an intruder last night, an alpha, who tried to kill her. The images flashed back into her head and fear gripped her heart. She wrapped her arms around her body. She had held her own, yet she was scared.
Xavier asked her into his room so he could keep her safe and she was grateful he did because she felt safe wrapped in his bed and arms.
She slept in his arms, and she liked it. It had to be the event of the night that made up for the decision to stay together.
She couldn't return to her room, not when she was so shaken by what happened there. Still, she needed to be in the court beside the king and hear the guard's progress so far in catching her attacker.
..
Xavier was having an intense discussion with prince Edward, Alpha Koz, the king's men, Commander Benzema, Sir Valerio and a few other army heads when he spotted Mia at the corner of the throne room.
She kept a reasonable distance despite being in the throne room, but her blue eyes lingered on him and they held a worried look he wanted to banish.
He abandoned the men now speaking to him and hurried over to the corner where she stood. His green eyes swam in the ocean of affections as he beheld her. The uncertainty in her eyes disappeared and a cheerful one came.
"How are you?" He asked, his hands taking hold of her face. He wouldn't have been so happy to see her interrupting a private meeting and also dressed the way she was in the past, but he concerned himself with none of that as he stared down at her. Her hands wrapped around what they could of his wrist and she flashed him a brave smile, "I'm fine, love."
His heart melted at the name she just called him. "I didn't mean to leave you alone in bed. But I had to meet with my guards. The intruder is still on the run."
"Did you sleep well?"
He wanted to hold her like this for much longer, but that wouldn't happen.
She nodded, her eyes almost fluttering. "I did. Your arms were warm, like always," she admitted, a small smile dancing at the corner of her face.
"I'm glad."
"I figured I wouldn't be allowed back into my room just yet, so I chose these out of your closet. I hope you don't mind."
She had moved out the few clothes she had in his room three days ago and nothing of hers was there anymore. Now, she had his long grey floral robe on which looked twice her size and he wondered how she managed to wander here without tripping a few steps. He also knew she made her hair herself because it was the sloppiest attempt at a bun he'd ever seen, but that didn't matter to him.
"They are the only small ones I saw." she raised her hands, which the robe had swallowed up for him to see.
He chuckled, and his green eyes glittered, and the sight sent chills down her spine.
"They look great on you, my queen," he said in adoration.
"Thank you, my king." she bowed a little. Her head lifted again, and she took notice of the men she had interrupted watching them. "What are you talking about?"
"The intruder. We have little information about him, which would make our search for him harder than it needs to be."
"I never saw his face, but his eyes glowed red. That means he's an alpha."
"We don't have alpha who are assassins in the kingdom though," Xavier said thoughtfully as he led her towards the men he was discussing with before she came.
She paused for a while, thinking back to the man she had faced last night. "I also saw a round red marking on his wrist after I tore his clothes with the dagger. I had never seen it before. It looked like a medallion of the moon or some sort, but I couldn't really see it." Alpha Koz, who was among the ones standing, approached her carefully. "Did it look like this?" He held up a medallion necklace on his neck.
She nodded, "Yes, this is it."
Alpha Koz then rolled up his sleeve to reveal the marking to Mia, and she nodded in affirmation.
Xavier's arms around her tightened. "The intruder is amongst the council of elders."
The throne room grew dead silent at this realisation. Mia's input had helped narrow down their search for the attacker from over three million indigenes to just ten, with the exception of Alpha Koz, whom Xavier trusted.
He heaved a sigh, his raging emotions showing in his eyes. He wanted to replace the alpha responsible for this and kill him. He wanted to rip out his heart for hurting his queen. An attack against Mia was an attack against him, the throne, and the kingdom. However, the suspect was an elder in the council and the other elders might take matters into their hands. They might choose to disgrace him publicly and strip him of his title before banishing him. And if he ever returned, he will be killed and no one would take his bones to the pathway where he would rest. Without the proper rites of resting at the pathway, he would never move on to the life beyond. And it would keep him trapped for all eternity. This was a grave punishment, yet Xavier wanted to do much worse to him. "You have said nothing."
Mia said, and his head snapped up to meet the eyes of those in the hall on him. He knew they waited for his words and he had to put his rage aside and give the order. "Gather the elders," he commanded.
