Chapter 2 My Fiancé Is Dead
“Shit! It’s on fire! Run!” The café instantly descended into chaos, with people screaming and coughing while rushing to get out. Arianna also hurried outside. She was stopped at the door by a woman who had been trampled in the crowd. In her panic, the woman grabbed onto Arianna, hoping the latter would help her. “Lady, please help my child. My child is still inside. Please help him,” the woman cried. Arianna’s face darkened, and she yanked the woman’s hand off. Fighting against the pain in her mouth, Arianna said with disgust, “The fire is raging inside. Do you want me to go in and die? Get lost!” Arianna then distanced herself from the woman. With a tearful voice, she called Wesley. “Wesley, hurry. I’m hurt.” The woman on the ground had lost her last bit of hope, so she wailed heartbrokenly. Onlookers around her whispered. “With such a big fire, who would go inside? Going in there means certain death!” “Exactly. That child inside is probably dead already.” Eleanor had been squeezed behind the crowd and had initially planned to leave. However, when she heard the woman’s plea, she furrowed her brows and quickly pushed through the crowd toward the café. Onlookers watched in shock as Eleanor dashed into the flames. “Is that young girl insane? Why did she rush into such a huge fire?” “She’s probably an idiot!” Just when everyone thought that Eleanor and the child had perished, Eleanor emerged from the café, carrying the child in her arms. Her clothes were burnt with several holes, her face was covered in soot, and she looked messy. But the child in her arms was unharmed. The mother held her child tight and wept with gratitude. When she regained her senses and wanted to thank Eleanor, Eleanor had already disappeared from the crowd. Alone, Eleanor took a cab to the hospital. In the rush to protect the child, Eleanor had been hit by a falling chandelier on her back. The pain was now searing, suggesting that her injury was serious. Eleanor couldn’t heal herself now, so she came to the hospital for help. To her surprise, Eleanor ran into Wesley and Arianna as soon as she arrived. Arianna had red and swollen eyes, looking vulnerable and pitiful. Wesley was carefully taking care of her, consoling her gently. Behind the two were a group of doctors in white coats, who appeared to be hospital executives. The fuss made Wesley and Arianna look like top management who was here for inspection, rather than a patient here for medical help. Eleanor curled her lip and walked straight to the outpatient department without saying hello to Arianna or her fiancé. The doctor was shocked by the severe injury on Eleanor’s back. “How did you get injured so badly?” “I accidentally got burned. Please give me some medication.” The doctor looked grave and couldn’t believe how someone so seriously injured would come to the hospital alone. There was a sharp contrast between Eleanor and the doctor’s last patient. When that actress arrived, the entire hospital’s top management was alarmed. Unlike the actress, Eleanor came alone and didn’t even sob despite her serious injury. The doctor suddenly realized the difference between a princess and a Cinderella. He sighed inwardly. The doctor assumed Eleanor was just a girl from a poor family because of her ordinary clothes. “You probably need surgery. Where is your family? We need a family member to sign the consent form.” “I’ll sign it by myself.” “You can’t. We won’t operate on you without your family’s signature.” Eleanor felt a bit sad. Her grandfather wasn’t here, so she had no one to sign for her. “I’m an orphan,” said Eleanor. The doctor was taken aback. “Do you have any other family members?” “I have a grandfather, but he doesn’t live in Burville.” “What about relatives? Any relatives or friends in town?” “I have a fiancé.” Eleanor suddenly recalled what she’d just seen and pouted with displeasure. “But he’s already dead. He lived an indulgent life, lacked moral values, and slept with a married woman. He was caught by her husband in bed and was beaten to death.” The doctor and nurse didn’t know what to say. Eventually, the doctor budged and allowed Eleanor to sign the form herself. As soon as Eleanor entered the operating room, Wesley received news that she was also at the hospital. Wesley rushed over to ask about her condition. “What happened to Eleanor Basford? How did she get injured? How bad is it?”
