Chapter 3 Not Worthy of Being My Wife

The nurse at the workstation was busy, and she seemed irritated by the interruption. However, when she saw Wesley, her face immediately lit up. This man was hot! The nurse blushed. “A patient named Eleanor Basford came to see the doctor a moment ago. Are you here for her? Who are you to her?” said the nurse. Wesley furrowed his brows. The nurse assumed Wesley was offended by her questions, so she immediately explained. “I don’t mean to pry into your privacy. It’s just that Ms. Basford told us she doesn’t have any family or friends in Burville.” The nurse continued, “She mentioned a fiancé, who slept with a married woman and was beaten to death by the woman’s husband. So, she signed the consent form for surgery herself.” Wesley’s face darkened. Did Eleanor say he’d slept with a married woman and got beaten to death by the woman’s husband? Infuriated, Wesley turned to leave and no longer cared about Eleanor. *** Eleanor had completed the surgery and received the necessary treatments. Despite the doctor’s objection, she left the hospital. Her injury was serious, but it was nothing compared to the ones she’d faced back in the mountains. She wasn’t the type to fuss over such matters. Eleanor returned home to replace Wesley on the phone. When Wesley noticed her, he frowned with displeasure. In a gentle tone, he spoke into the phone. “Don’t overthink it. Listen to the doctor and get some rest. I’ll call you later.” Apparently, Wesley was talking to Arianna. When the call ended, Wesley’s voice immediately turned cold. “Why did you slap Arianna today?!” he demanded. Eleanor was irritated. She hadn’t told him to keep his girl in check, and he was questioning her already! “Why? What do you think? Because she deserved it!” Eleanor snapped. “She’s an actress. Her face is how she earns a living. How is she going to work with a swollen face?” “Why should I care? If her face is so important to her, why didn’t she protect it carefully? She shouldn’t have come to beg me to slap her. She did this to herself!” Wesley pursed his lips. Apparently, he was fuming. “I knew you were from a modest background, but I didn’t expect you to have no manners at all! Is someone like you even worthy of being my wife?” Eleanor burst into laughter. “Man, are you kidding me? Do you think I want to be your wife? If I could break off our engagement right now, I’d be overjoyed! Don’t believe me? Try it! Let’s break up!” Wesley was stupefied for a moment. “Do you think I would have engaged with you if my grandfather hadn’t made me?” Eleanor sneered, “Do you think I would have engaged with you if my grandfather hadn’t made me?” Suddenly, the room fell silent. Both of them were forced into this marriage arrangement, and neither of them had any affection for the other. “You can’t justify assaulting someone in public, anyway!” Wesley fumed. Eleanor didn’t flinch. “Can she justify insulting me with swear words in public? If insulting someone is acceptable, does it mean I can say any swear words to you right now?” “You’re unreasonable! You’re the most unreasonable woman I’ve ever seen in my life!” Wesley shouted. “You’re the most shameless man I’ve ever seen in my life. You’re this old, and you want to marry a young girl. Shameless!” Eleanor continued, “You love Arianna, don’t you? Then convince your grandpa to break off our engagement and marry her! You can’t even get the girl you love. How useless you are!” Wesley had a hard time processing what he heard. Shameless? Useless? Was Eleanor talking about him? Finally, he roared, “ELEANOR BASFORD!” Eleanor involuntarily shivered. This jerk was frightening when he got angry. “Don’t shout at me. I’m not deaf.” Wesley’s breath was ragged with anger. He stared at Eleanor for a while before speaking. “You’d better behave yourself from now on and not provoke Arianna again.” With that, he stormed off to the study upstairs, slamming the door hard behind him. Eleanor, seething with anger, shouted toward the upstairs. “Who provoked whom? You’d better make things clear with Arianna! If she bothers me again, I’ll slap her again!” Eleanor finished her angry statement and went to the guest room, slamming the door even harder than Wesley.
