Love Began with the First Meeting -
Chapter 810 The Deadly Duel (Part Two)
The scene, with the continuous fighting between Brian and Eric, was reaching its climax, and the air seemed to thicken with the mere intensity of the two men. Both had acquired bruises from the other, and soon they seemed to be covered in them. While the fight continued on, and the audience watched with anticipation as the fight progressed, a small figure stayed hidden by one of the withered reed bushes that surrounded the fight and the area. As she watched, the woman hidden in the bushes widened her eyes as the excitement of the fight washed over her. She raised her camera and then pressed the shutter button unbeknownst to anyone. She took several pictures through the fight, but at one point, both fighters grappling with each other stumbled back a few steps and got separated. They looked at each other with bloodshot eyes as if they were beasts nastily irritated by each other.
"You truly didn't disappoint me," Brian said in a flat voice as he straightened up and rubbed the blood off the corner of his mouth with a finger.
Eric smiled and raised his eyebrows, replying just as ironically, "I was afraid you'll come back and steal my position as the ruler. So I kept exercising hard for quite a few days!"
Brian smiled helplessly. If Eric dared to joke with him, then it must mean that the dispute between them was gone, or at least temporarily forgotten.
"Cousin," said Eric, smiling while his expression turned serious. "It's said that the bonding as cousins can only exist in this lifetime, but in the next lifetime, such bonding will never continue..." There was a touch of sadness to his words. "If there is really a next life that we'll have, I'll be your younger cousin, and you'll be my older cousin. Deal?"
Brian looked at Eric for a while before saying."Things in the next life are too far away to tell... Let's just keep our bonds as really good cousins for the rest of our lives!" He had the gut feeling that Eric had planned his failure so he said those words as though they would be his last.
The corner of Eric's lip curled up in a smirk, but it was too stiff.
Just at that moment, a gust of wind blew and faded the smoke away around the area, obscuring the audience's view. And when the audience could see again, Eric and Brian already had revolvers in their hands again, and the muzzles of the revolvers were pointed at each other again.
"Let's do it together!" Brian's voice had always been so indifferent from beginning till now, as he knew that Eric had a lot of things figured out already. But figuring out was one thing. The pain that Eric's discovery brought was another thing. So he planned this duel, including his own failure of the deadly duel. So he wouldn't need to bear the pain of living on and his cousin and Molly could live happily together.
Eric answered quickly,"Okay!"
"Click!"
"Click!"
Both of them pulled the trigger at the same time. Luckily, no bullet came from either gun.
"Click!"
"Click!"
The second time showed the same result; no bullet came out of either gun. Again, Brian and Eric were still both alive and standing.
There was only one round left. This was bound to determine who would win and stay alive, and who would lose and die. Truthfully, their fatal duel was never meant to happen, but sometimes, only with an extreme scenario could men push away the things that were deep in their heart, bothering them so much that their whole life was hindered and their thinking blocked.
Meanwhile, Lenny's heart raced quickly but Tony suddenly became very calm. It was often that the people standing on the outside of a dilemma or problem had the observances of a calm mind and therefore could see the whole truth even if the people in the face of said problem or dilemma didn't realize or ignore the problem.
There was no change in Brian's facial expression and Eric was still and his facial expression was unreadable so no one could see what he was thinking. The noises of the simple movements of their fingers as they pulled their guns' triggers were quiet but in the near death silence of the area, they seemed loud.
"Bang!" "Bang!"
Brian's and Eric's third and final gunshots rang out at the same time, breaking through the silent atmosphere. Every audience uttered a gasp and widened their eyes in surprise. The reporter that was hiding in the bushes even forgot to snap a photo of that moment, too entranced by what had just happened.
No one could have ever expected that both men's third bullets would make their appearance in the final round of the duel.
Eric's eyes widened, and as the bullet was dashing at Brian at full speed, he could only yell out. "Cousin!"
"Ping!"
As everyone held their breaths, they heard only one crashing sound, and the two bullets collided with each other in a blink of an eye, and then bounced off in different directions with the momentum of the crash. "poof, poof!" With the sounds, the two bullets were embedded in the stumps.
Only now did Eric then realize what had just happened. He stared at Brian. "Did you know in advance that my bullet was in the third round?" he asked angrily.
Brian's thin lips were raised slightly, forming a barely visible smile, and he looked deep into Eric's eyes. "It's time for you to let go of your mental block, Eric," he said to him earnestly. After taking the cartridge holder out of his revolver, he threw both gun and cartridge to Tony, who was now standing nearby him. Brian approached Eric and said sincerely, "I spoke to our second uncle before I got back, and since I knew what your purpose was, naturally, I could easily guess a lot of things right as we grew up together and I know you so well.
