Chapter 120
Chapter 120
"Hmm?" What did he mean?
Andrew took Madelyn's phone from her hands and pulled her onto his lap. "Do you really trust her?" He asked, referring to Melinda.
Over the years, there were scandals of adults manipulating children to beg for money, only to drive away in a luxury car afterward. Such stories were common.
Madelyn had thought of those deceitful scenarios as well, but remembering Melinda's desperate look as she knelt outside the doctor's office with Serena, she felt a pang of sorrow in her heart. "If it's all an act, that's fine, too."
Andrew froze. His face instantly stiffened.
Madelyn wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her head in his shoulder. "The despair in her eyes wasn't fake."
She had experienced such despair herself.
As the car neared the Garcia Manor, Madelyn asked the chauffeur to stop. She didn't want the car to drive all the way in.
Andrew held her and asked, "Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?"
"No, I can handle it myself," she rejected the offer.
"Alright." Andrew relented. He didn't insist, seeing her determination, and watched her get out of the car alone.
Her small, delicate figure revealed a hidden strength he hadn't noticed before. Such resilience hadn't been there when she was with the Millers.
What had happened in the ten years she had been with the Garcias to transform her from a pampered princess into someone so self-reliant?
In the matter of Easton's shares, she seemed naive but handled everything meticulously and orderly. Such competence wouldn't have come from the sheltered upbringing she had with the Millers.
Andrew's eyes were dark as he gave a cold order, "After you take me back to the company, stay here and wait for her to come out."
The more he thought about it, the less he trusted the Garcias. He had even grown to despise those filthy bloodsuckers! Benson nodded respectfully. "Understood."
Amelia had been waiting at the Garcia Manor's entrance. When she saw Madelyn approaching, her brows furrowed briefly.
She forced a smile and stepped forward to ask, trying to sound warm, "Did Andrew not come with you?" She had expected Andrew to come with Madelyn, given the distrust he had shown toward the Garcias. Seeing Madelyn show up alone, she wondered whether their loving display was merely an act.
Madelyn feigned ignorance and asked in return, "Didn't you only ask me to come back?"
Amelia chided, "I'm your mother. How long are you going to keep guarding against me?"
Madelyn didn't respond To her, the Garcias were the people she should guard against the most. After all, they had abandoned her at the hospital as soon as she was born.
She wouldn't make the same mistake as in her previous life, believing they had accidentally lost her. When she had learned of the real reason the Garcias took her back, her disappointment turned into utter
despair.
When Elena walked over, Amelia's face lit up with a smile. "Is Matthew's family here?"
"Yes. Krista is talking to Grandma right now." Elena affectionately linked arms with Amelia. She appeared gentle, but her eyes gleamed with smugness.
Madelyn might seem indifferent, but she was actually harboring a deep-seated hatred, wishing she could tear Elena to pieces. Elena quickly looked away, feeling a chill run down her spine. Amelia snorted in disapproval when she heard that Krista was talking to Victoria. "Every time she comes, you all lose your place. Elena, you need to step up!"
"Mom, Maddie's here. What are you saying?"
Amelia was taken aback. She instinctively looked at Madelyn, who retracted her disdainful gaze. Anger flared within her, but she suppressed it.
Elena noticed Madelyn's lack of reaction and bit her lips in frustration. She felt as if it had all been wasted.
