Chapter 11

Zara parked the car and walked over. “Mr. Webb.”

The streetlights cast a dim glow on the path, barely revealing the man’s stern profile. He did Tak kaa, not turn to look at Zara, and the cigarette between his fingers was flickering.

With a silent sigh, Zara scanned the area and spotted a 24–hour convenience store. She bought a sandwich that could be eaten directly.

“You barely touched your dinner. Eat this to tide you over so that you won’t get a stomachache.

Yosef gave her an annoyed look but accepted the sandwich.

In a hushed tone, Zara said, “You know, clashing with Chairman Webb isn’t wise. He has high blood pressure and was even admitted to the hospital last year…”

Yosef’s response was a cold sneer. He tossed the sandwich he was holding aside, grabbed Zara, swung open the car door, and had her pinned to the back seat.

He moved so deftly that she could feel her head spinning. Before she could come back to her senses, she found her legs forced apart.

Her mind reeled in protest, and she put up her hands to stop him. “Mr. Webb!”

They were on a quiet path, but it was not devoid of passersby. The thought of being seen like this was unbearable.

“Mr. Webb! Please, not here!”

Yosef pressed her hands above her head, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. “So, Ms. Lowry, you’ve learned to say no? I thought you were everyone’s favorite Princess Charming?”

Trapped in the tight space of the back seat, Zara felt his breaths overwhelming her senses, After a tense few seconds, she finally managed to voice her thoughts.

“It’s not like everyone’s a fan of me. You certainly aren’t… Do you like Beatrice? Do you actually like her, or is it just a fleeting interest?”

She had thought Yosef was just momentarily interested in Beatrice. To be totally upfront, she thought he just found Beatrice alluring and was looking for a quick fling, nothing more.

However, he dropped that bombshell the other night, saying Beatrice was ‘against premarital stuff

The last time she messed up, she got shipped off to somewhere else for two months. This

She did not have to ask, really. What she did not know would not hurt her, and sometimes, it was best not to dig too deep. She should just play it cool, and everyone would get along just

dib her

Ever since he rescued her three years ago, she had been head over heels for him. She convinced herself that being by his side was all that mattered, even if it meant having no pride and being

treated like a tool.

After all, if he had not stepped in, she would have ended up in a much worse state back then.

It turned out, that was not the case.

People were greedy. Ever since she fell for him, she had been craving something deeper, but it was always out of reach.

Now, she had to watch all the things she could not get from him–affection, favoritism, adoration, and even marriage–being handed to someone else. She had been holding back for so long, but she just could not anymore. She had to ask.

Was he seriously falling for Beatrice? The kind of falling that would lead to tying the knot?

Yosef did not say a word and just watched her in the dark. Sometimes, silence spoke volumes.

Zara chuckled, a hint of mockery in her voice. “You’re planning to marry her, but here you are, messing with me. Doesn’t that make you disloyal?”

Yosef shrugged off the accusation. “I’m just using a tool I have. How’s that cheating?”

Before he could finish that thought, Zara’s hand flew out, slapping him across the face with a sharp smack. She had not planned it, and the shock of her own impulse surprised her.

They locked eyes. This was Yosef’s first time being slapped, and it was by the very woman he had no respect for. He felt a chill run through him.

To Zara, calling herself a tool was one thing, but hearing it from Yosef with that sneer in his voice was something else entirely. She had hit him, and she did not regret it one bit.

She could feel herself shaking.

This was what it felt like to shake with rage.

Yosef’s gaze was icy. When he caught sight of the tears in her eyes, annoyance bubbled up inside him. He yanked at his collar, stood up suddenly, and snapped, “Get out.”

Lips pressed into a thin line, Zara straightened her clothes and stepped out of the car. The door had not even shut when Yosef floored the accelerator and sped off.

Staring at the car, Zara felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. It was growing heavier by the second. It was almost too much to bear.

It felt like fate was nudging her to move on, and that push came swiftly. In fact, it happened the very next day.
