My Husband -
Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Sloane’s home was modest, a small
one–bedroom apartment. The space was sparse, with only the bare essentials visible. Yet, my photograph was placed in the most prominent spot.
Nora sat on the carpet, diligently solving a Rubik’s cube. Sloane, meanwhile, was organizing our photos. Watching the two of them, I couldn’t help but be moved to tears.
Nora’s clothes, though not new, were meticulously clean. She was well–groomed and taken care of. I knew entrusting Nora to Sloane was the right choice. In this world, besides me, the person who loved Nora the most was her.

After tidying up, Sloane limped towards the kitchen. Nora glanced at her Rubik’s cube, then at the kitchen. In the next moment, she got up and eagerly followed Sloane.
When I was alive, Nora used to do the same thing whenever I cooked. She would follow me closely, and I always worried about hot oil splashing on her, trying to shoo her away. Each time, Nora would earnestly say, “I want to stay with Mommy. I’m afraid you might disappear one day.”
Little did I know how prophetic those words would be.
Sloane placed my photo in the only empty spot, and Nora began talking to me. “Mommy, I miss you so much!”

“Sloane says I’ve grown taller. You’d be so happy if you knew, wouldn’t you?”
“I’ve seen Sloane crying in the middle of the night several times, but I don’t know how to comfort her. Because I want to cry too.”
I couldn’t help but cry again.
If only I could have held on a little longer, perhaps I could be there with them, sitting by their side, eating and chatting together.
Instead, I can only watch helplessly as they suffer from the torment of missing me.
I grew up in an orphanage, with no parents. Being small and frail, I often couldn’t get enough to eat and was bullied by the other kids.

Sloane was the one who stood up for me and chased them away.
Back then, Sloane wasn’t disabled. She could run and jump, dreaming of becoming an athlete.
But during a mountain climbing trip, I accidentally rolled down a slope. Sloane
protected me with her body, but in doing so, she broke her leg.
Despite her own pain, she put on a brave face to comfort me.
“Don’t be scared, Mirabelle. We’ll be rescued!”
We waited at the bottom of that cliff for a day and a night before rescuers found us, but it was too late. Sloane’s leg suffered irreversible

damage.
From that point on, her dream became an unreachable chasm. Her disability brought her many disdainful looks in society.
If it were me, I would have harbored resentment towards the person who caused my condition.
But Sloane would comfort me when I felt down.
“I saved you willingly, don’t carry that burden.”
Due to her disability, she couldn’t earn much, barely enough to get by. Despite this, she was always good to me.
After I gave birth to Nora, she treated Nora like her own daughter, spoiling her.

Every bit of money she saved went towards
Nora.
I would tease her for not thinking of herself and always buying things for Nora. Each time, she would smile and kiss Nora.
“Our Nora is so adorable, I just can’t help it!”
She is the only person I can trust after my death, the one who will always love and care for Nora.
In that moment, I felt grateful that I had left all my inheritance to them when I was terminally ill.
At least this way, their future would be a bit easier.
