Chapter 11

(Yashira)

I woke up to a small hand touching my cheek. I open my eyes to see Tristan looking at me with a cute smile on his face.

‘Morning’ I mouthed.

“Mowning” he grins. I hear his little stomach. I chuckle silently.

‘Go brush your teeth and we’ll get you food’ I mouthed slowly for him. He nods and slides off the bed and makes his way out of the room. I get up and go to the bathroom to do my morning routine. I found a toothbrush and toothpaste. I brushed my teeth and went out of the room. I looked at the clothes Gabriel brought me, and I saw a dress. I changed my clothes to the dress. It’s a beautiful sundress. I put on some flats. Tristan comes back in with some shoes.

“Pwease help me” he says, and I nod at him with a smiled gesturing for him to sit on the bed. I help him with his sneakers and then we head down to the kitchen. I get out some eggs, bacon, and things to make pancakes.

‘You want to help me?’ I ask Tristan mouthing the words slowly.

“Yes” he nods his little head vigorously. I grab a chair and bring it to the kitchen. I begin with the pancake mix. I help Tristan mix the batter and get to cooking. I watched as Tristan scrambled the eggs. Which all he did was his hands in the bowl and squish the eggs which made me laugh silently. After we finished breakfast, I fixed his plate. When I turned, I saw Gabriel standing by the door with his arms crossed over his broad chest and a smile on his face.

‘We made breakfast’ I signed.

“I saw. Thank you” he grabbed some of the plates and took them to the dining room. I grabbed some juice and syrup and follow after them. I sit down and cut up Tristan’s pancakes.

“You don’t need to do that. I can do it for him” Gabriel says.

‘It’s my pleasure. He’s such a sweet boy’ I sign when I finished cutting up his pancake. I put some syrup on them and put some bacon on his plate. I then grab some bacon, eggs, and two pancakes and begin to eat.

“This is good. Thank you both for making breakfast” Gabriel says and Tristan beams at him. The front door opens, and Jeffrey runs in. He looks at me and smiles widely.

“Yashira your grandma is awake” he says. I stand and run out the door following him almost running into Ashley I the process. I run to the clinic and to grandma’s room to see that she indeed was awake. I let out a shaky breath and run to her side.

‘Abuelita, you scared me. I’m so happy that you’re awake’ I sign. I wanted to cry knowing that she was finally awake.

“I’m sorry I scared you estrellita” I can hear the sincereness in her voice.

‘What matters is that you are awake now’ I sign and Jeffrey nods in agreement. A few minutes late Tristan runs in.

“Nana” he squeals before trying to jump on the bed. Jeffrey chuckles and helps him up. After we talk for a little while grandma got tired, and I left the room with Tristan. On our way pack to the pack house, I notice Gabriel and Ashley. It looks like they were arguing, and Ashley had a paper in her hand. I see other kids playing and take Tristan’s hand. He looks up at me and I kneel.

‘Do you want to go play with the kids?’ I sign mouthing the words slowly for him. He looks at the other kids and nod excitedly. I gestured for him to go play. As soon as he gets there and start to play, I make my way to go to the pack house.

“Oh, it’s you. I’m glad I caught you” Ashley says standing in front of me.

“Ashley-” Gabriel puts a hand on her shoulder, but she shrugs it off.

“It seems your grandma is late in paying what she owes on the diner. She either pays the money by the end of the week or I take the diner from her” Ashley says shoving the paper on my chest. I grab the paper and look at it.

‘Two thousand dollars?’ I sign and Gabriel translates.

“Yes, and I don’t have them by Friday I will take the diner away” Ashley smirked. I began to get the same feeling from before. The electricity swirling inside me.

‘No need for such drama. You will have your money. Just make sure you have the deed to the diner by tonight’ I signed looking at Gabriel.

‘Would you mind taking me to my grandma’s house?’ I asked Gabriel.

“Sure” he says.

“What she say?” Ashley asks.

“I’m taking her to her grandmother’s house” Gabriel tells her making Ashley growled loudly and pulled Gabriel towards her kissing him as if claiming him as hers. Gabriel pulled away with a scowl on his face. I just rolled my eyes and walked towards Gabriel’s Land Rover.

“Yashira, I had no idea about this. We were arguing because I told her it wasn’t the time to tell you this, but she didn’t listen. I swear I didn’t know until just a few minutes ago” Gabriel says.

‘Don’t worry about it. I’m actually glad she came to me and didn’t go to my grandma’ I sign. Silence settles between us. I could feel him looking at me once in a while, but I didn’t turn to look at him. When we got to grandma’s house I ran inside and grabbed my bank card and ID. Not wanting to keep my tips laying around I had decided to open up an account and also transferred my funds from Puerto Rico to my new bank. After grabbing my card, I headed back out to the car.

‘If it’s not too much trouble, could we go to the bank? I’ll give you gas money’ I sign.

“You don’t need to give me gas money” he tells me as he pulls out of the parking lot. He turns on the radio. My phone dings with a notification. I take it out of my pocket and see it’s my brother.

Joel: Hey sis. How is grandma?

Me: She’s good. She just woke up.

Joel: Call me so I can talk to her real quick.

Me: I’m not at the hospital right now.

Joel: What do you mean? She just woke up and you’re not with her?

Me: I had to go somewhere, but as soon as I get back, I’ll have her call you, okay?

Joel: I’m sorry sis. I’ve been stressed out and so have the guys” he says

Me: I understand. Let me do what I have to do here, and I’ll call you as soon as I get to grandma’s room okay?

Joel: Okay and I’m sorry sis. I love you.

Me: I love you too. Keep the phone close by.

I put my phone away and I look at Gabriel to see he was holding the stirring wheel with a deadly grip. His knuckles were white. I had no idea why he was angry. Maybe he considered it rude for me to answer the phone while it’s just the both of us in the car.

‘Sorry, it was my brother. He wanted to know how our grandma was plus he’s a little stress’ I sign. I see his grip loosen on the stirring wheel.

“Your brother?” he echoes.

‘Yes, I have an older brother’ I sign.

“Where is he?” he asks.

‘On tour?’ I sign

“So, your brother is a musician?” Gabriel asks.

‘Yes, his name is Joel. Our friends Martin, Michael, Lucas, and Santos are also in the band. Well they are more like brothers’ I smile while signing.

“I’ve heard their names before around the pack. What’s the name of the band?” Gabriel asks.

‘Rockplay’ I sign.

“I’ve heard of them. I like their music” he says, and I smile.

“How come you didn’t end up in the band with your brother?” he asks.

‘I joked around with my brothers but that was it. That’s not the life for me’ I sign as we pulled up at the bank.

“I’ll be right back” I tell him and go inside the bank.
