Chapter 25: Aspiring to the Position of Alpha

Sebastian's POV

Chapter 25: Aspiring to the Position of Alpha

Debra's behavior was impossible to understand, and her inexplicable attitude toward. Melissa only fueled my irritation.

Just as things between us were finally progressing, all these chaotic events were threatening to tear down the fragile trust we had just begun to build.

I never expected it to come to this. My only intention was to take Melissa to the town to relax and introduce her to my family. I couldn't have imagined it would turn out like this.

This morning, she was still peacefully asleep beside me.

I kissed her cheek, thinking that if she woke up, I wouldn't be able to resist making love to her.

But perhaps the wine had taken its toll, or maybe she was just exhausted; she only brushed her fingers lightly across my face before drifting back to sleep.

Shakti was already waiting outside my office door early in the morning. She said that Debra was eager to have breakfast with me and that. To set a good example for the Pack, I had to fulfill my duties as a son.

"I agreed to have breakfast with you, but that doesn't mean I'm interested in anything beyond that. I already spoke to the head maid-she'll let Melissa know where I am."

To avoid unnecessary misunderstandings, I made my intentions clear to Shakti from the

start.

Her face flushed, her pale hand clenching in a restrained fist.

"Alpha, do you really see me as such a conniving woman?"

I couldn't deny Shakti's jealousy; she hadn't expected me to care for Melissa so deeply.

But I knew that ever since Rachel left, I had long given up on forming any intimate bond with anyone. Meeting Melissa felt like a blessing from the Moon Goddess. Though I didn't know what our future held, for now, I was willing to give this relationship everything I had, nurturing it with sincerity and devotion..

Standing beside the stunning Shakti, my heart was filled with memories of Melissa's every smile and frown. In my heart, there was no relationship more perfect than ours. Entering the Crystal Garden, I found Debra preparing to have breakfast with Geraint and

Vince.

I pulled out a chair and sat down to greet them. After pouring myself a cup of coffee, I grabbed some fries and popped them into my mouth.

"I thought you wouldn't come," Debra said with a sly smile, handing me a slice of bread spread with jam. Her expression was unreadable, making it impossible to guess her intentions.

"It seems our Alpha doesn't spend all his time on that meadow secondhand," Vince sneered, raising an eyebrow at me with obvious disdain.

"Keep your mouth shut when you're eating," Geraint muttered, unable to stand his brother's stupidity, and stuffed a freshly rolled flatbread into his mouth.

Shakti remained silent, just casting me a few gentle glances but bracing herself for the impending argument.

"So, the Northern Fortress has already been renovated this extravagantly? Look at the place I'm staying-tsk, tsk..." Debra remarked, casually adding a scoop of baked beans to my plate. Her words made me frown.

"I'm the wife of the former Alpha, driven to the outskirts thanks to certain people, forced to leave my home. And here you are, not even bothering to investigate your father's death, yet wasting time cavorting with that woman?"

This crazy woman certainly knew how to push my buttons!

I had to admit, my father's achievements in leadership were flawless, but that was only true for our own pack!

Why did these people choose to ignore the external threats and the harsh realities we faced?

"Or do you think that becoming Alpha and doing this much is already enough to gain the Pack's approval? If so, maybe the way the former Alpha raised you was a mistake. You lack the capability to lead the whole Pack and your moral standards were even in question." Debra's tone was exaggerated, yet it didn't stop her from popping her favorite fruit into her mouth, flashing me an incredibly innocent smile.

"I'm an adult now; your tactics won't work on me."

I knew she was trying to provoke me, but her words didn't shake my feelings for Melissa in the slightest.

"So, what exactly have you brought to the North since becoming Alpha? It seems like nothing! You haven't expanded our territory as the former Alpha did, and the treasures and wealth you've acquired hardly amount to much! The current glory of the North has developed solely on the foundation we already had!"

Vince's resentment toward me had been festering for a long time. He muttered something incomprehensible under his breath.

"If I were Alpha, I'd have already taken Nottingham Forest, Southampton Prairie, and the 43.3%

Bay! I'd make those places our territory, instead of falling in love with prostitutes brought in from other places, like you and that Beta.."

"Oh, you mean like when my father forced himself on your mother and brought you two into this world?" I scoffed, my voice dripping with contempt.

If it weren't for my mother's tolerance, they'd still carry the stigma of being illegitimate.

Debra's expression darkened instantly. She struggled to keep her composure, but my words were harsh enough that she could barely tolerate them.

"What did Vince say that was wrong? Your accomplishments don't even compare to those of the former Alpha. If you're willing, I'd be more than happy for Geraint to take over your duties. You can continue as Alpha, and Geraint would make an outstanding Wolf King." Listening to my stepmother's words, I could hardly believe it-she must be out of her mind.

"And just what position do you think you hold to speak to me this way? Haven't I been more than lenient with you all? If you keep testing my patience with your words, don't blame me for abandoning whatever thin shred of goodwill remains between us." I thought she might have forgotten that we didn't even share a drop of blood.

"Alpha! You're overthinking this. Aunt Debra and my brother didn't mean any harm-they just don't want your position as Alpha to become a joke. You deserve a stronger woman to be your Luna, not some secondhand fling."

"Do you think you're also once offered as a pawn in a marriage alliance?"

in a marriage. Perior? Aren't you just as weak? Weren't y

Shakti's foolishness made me laugh, and I couldn't summon even the slightest interest in this woman.

"Whether it's unifying or conquering, I have my own plans. There's no need for you to worry. If you're hoping I'll abandon Melissa and choose a woman you can control, then I'll tell you plainly-you're thinking far too small. Whether you intend to support Geraint or not, I'd like to see if my people and pack would actually rise in your defense."

"Even with all your influence, don't you still need an heir and a Luna? Mignon may not even live to adulthood, and as for the former Luna of the Meadows, I don't believe the Pack would ever accept her!"

My anger finally erupted, and I hurled my plate across the room.

Mignon, my daughter with Rachel, was my Achilles' heel.

"If you want to keep living comfortably, keep your mouth shut and stay in Howell Town. Don't do anything unnecessary, or I can't guarantee that accidents won't happen to you." Leaving those words behind, I turned and left, unwilling to waste any more time on these people. When they've thought things over, there will be a better opportunity to talk.

Melissa's POV

When I woke up in the morning and felt the cold emptiness beside me, a wave of disappointment washed over me.

The head maid informed me that Sebastian had gone to see his family.

I couldn't help but feel worried; his family might only make him feel worse.

Phoebe invited me to breakfast, and during the meal, she couldn't resist gossiping with me about Kala and Martell's relationship.

"Did you know? Last night when I went looking for Kala, that guy just threw her over his shoulder and carried her off! Looks like he does have some feelings for our little firecracker.

I smiled quietly. Those two obviously cared about each other, but their pride made their interactions so awkward.

"How's it going with decoding those curses?"

Seeing Phoebe so relaxed, I suddenly remembered the serious matters at hand.

The ambush, the crazy Atrias, the eastern, southern, and western alliances.... everything seemed too strange, and I found it hard to believe Elliott would get involved in such chaos. Back in Phoebe's room, we carefully retraced everything that had happened that day.

I believed that Atrias, of all people, wouldn't want to see the Pack thrown into turmoil- there had to be a reason behind his actions.

But to put pressure and create trouble for the North, it would never be for such a ridiculous reason as simply wanting me.

"Relax, Melissa!" Phoebe caught onto my tension and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat.

"These things don't need to weigh so heavily on you. Let me show you what I've managed to decode so far, and then we'll go for a stroll in the garden."

I had to admit, Swan was a fool for not recognizing her worth.

I'd always known that, while Phoebe wasn't a fierce fighter, her defense and intelligence were unparalleled.

With her help, the Northern Realm's army could definitely hold its ground against any witch's Whispers..

As we reached the garden, we found it unusually crowded.
