Chapter 41: An Unexpected Child

Chapter 41: An Unexpected Child

Melissa's POV

Martell opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end, he couldn't defend himself.

I didn't press him further. Perhaps I could learn more about their situation from Sebastian.

Planning the engagement was exhausting, but luckily, I had Phoebe and Kala to help me. Since attending the grand Vrzogic family banquet, I'd noticed a marked increase in the Northern families' acceptance of me. Martell was still pleading with Kala to return to his side, to move back into his room, but Kala had shown no interest in agreeing. I knew his actions had hurt her deeply, just as 1 had once hesitated to trust Sebastian. "Melissa, you need to brace yourself! These Northerners are rather stubborn to deal with, and most of them are extreme in their views, Phoebe said as she picked out engagement dresses, hoping I could use my aura to win over the elders. "It's no different in other regions," I replied. I believed that every region had its biases, and that it was the duty of Alpha couples to guide their pack members in breaking down these barriers. "We've both been Lunas, so we understand some things all too well. For now, let the men. handle it," Kala said as she prepared the wristbands and floral arrangements, reassuring us both.

"When Northern warriors broke into our pack back then, those cowardly ex-husbands of ours just pushed us forward to fend for ourselves. All they knew was fear."

Remembering those days, we all shook our heads in resignation.

Those men may have known they should resist the North, but they could barely form. alliances-and what little they did was almost useless. Instead, they sent women, children, and younger family members here in exchange for a feeble peace.

"It had nothing to do with us, yet we were the ones cast aside, sent here because we were deemed unnecessary," Phoebe said, still saddened by those memories. But looking at me, she managed a smile.

"At least now you have an Alpha who adores you and would never let again."

"If you have time to worry about me, you should think about replaceing someone suitable here in the North for yourself."

I chuckled, giving Phoebe's cheek a playful pinch before turning to Kala.

"And as for you and Gamma, people are talking. You really don't have to let that witch

bother you."

"Martell comes from a respected background. His great-grandfather served the Dark Alpha, which secured him his current position. The same rules that apply to Sebastian apply to him. Even though his family hasn't spoken out, and no one has openly argued about our relationship, if we were to be together and defy Northern traditions, his family wouldn't let it slide. As for that witch-she's been with him since she was a virgin; she's considered an ideal match."

Kala's expression remained indifferent, but I could catch a hint of sadness in her eyes.

"So it's best to keep away from this whole mess."

Phoebe wrapped her arms around both of us, her sincerity radiating as she wished happiness for us..

"Maybe we haven't encountered many loyal men, but look at Alpha-he's someone you can trust. They've treated us kindly and aren't anything like the rumors made them out to be. They've welcomed us, letting us live a normal life here in the North. Back when we were Lunas, our roles were crystal clear, but after betrayal, we're still bound by these rules. If we ignore them, we'll only create more issues."

She wasn't wrong. Compared to the heartbreak we once felt, at least now we could live with some peace and joy.

"To be honest, seeing you and Sebastian together makes me a little envious. I wish Martell could treat me the same way, but he hasn't. Maybe I'm just a passing fancy to him, which is why I can't bring myself to trust him again. Don't miss out on this good man." Kala's blessing was heartfelt, laced with her own longing, but I wanted her to know, too: Though we've endured injustice and pain, things are different now.

These two men were not bastards, and Sebastian had made it clear that they were to respect women.

"Darling, don't think like that. We've all been hurt by love, but we have to try again. Don't let Martell's mistakes he hasn't even made, weigh you down with pain."

I looked at Kala, sensing the weight of her stress, and poured her a glass of champagne.

"I've been staying away from alcohol lately," she said with a smile, then gently took my hand and placed it on her belly. "It's not good for the baby."

At her words, we all gasped in shock.

"Oh my god, something this big, and you didn't tell us!" Phoebe was just as caught off guard by the sudden revelation.

Kala beamed, her face full of happiness. She was about to become a mother again, experiencing a joy she had never known before.

"I only realized because my skin changed color suddenly, my emotions were all over the place, I became more sensitive to smells, and I was constantly tired. So, this is now a secret between the three of us."

Hearing this, I felt a twinge of jealousy mixed with admiration. I wanted a child too, but this good fortune had chosen her instead. Right now, she was like a magnet for new life.

"You little rascal, making everyone jealous," I teased, unable to resist touching her still-flat belly. "Aren't you planning on telling Martell?"

Faced with my confusion, Kala sighed helplessly.

"I left the test in the bathroom, but that idiot decided to go see his 'dear' ex-girlfriend to break the curse instead."

So that was why they were living apart.

"That idiot! Fool! I've almost figured out a way to lift the curse, but he refuses to trust me and goes running to her instead!"

Phoebe was so irritated by his behavior that she kept slapping her forehead, wishing she could rush over and knock him out.

"At dinner, I think it's time a certain idiot was clued in," I declared, my tone leaving no room for argument. If he dared to argue with me, I would use my rights as Luna.

At dinner, Sebastian noticed my serious expression and tried to keep the mood light.

"You two have been spending a lot of time together lately!"

"We sure have!" I replied, placing my hand on his thigh. "Because neither of us is about to leave a pregnant woman on her own to go chasing someone else."

At my words, everyone at the table fell silent.

"Who's pregnant?" Sebastian asked, sounding a bit panicked.

I looked at Kala, but she averted her gaze. It seemed she hadn't decided whether to share the news yet, but I realized that this good news needed to reach the other party as soon as possible. "Congratulations, Martell," I said, directing my attention to the North Gamma, whose hand trembled as he held his fork.

"Bro, your family has been having only one son for eleven generations. I can't imagine how many times your mother has urged you to hurry home and settle down and start a family." Sebastian was genuinely happy for his friend.

"You should have told me sooner. I thought you were just feeling down for no reason. Now! I understand why you've been in such a bad mood."

Finally, Martell reacted, leaning in to kiss Kala. Throughout this, we all chimed in to encourage him. Kala initially tried to mask her emotions with annoyance but soon burst into laughter. They had finally made up. Pulling my gaze away from them, I took my lover's hand tightly. I believed that the day we would welcome our own little miracle wouldn't be far off.
