Chapter 40: Strange Relations

Chapter 40: Strange Relations

Melissa's POV

Time passes quietly, and I almost forgot we'd promised Ethan Vrzogic to attend the dinner party he was hosting at his villa on Oneida Lake.

Ethan had invited many people, including Debra. With Vince sent away to the wasteland, she seemed more restrained now and greeted me with great politeness.

I had never paid much attention to their words or actions. Lately, I had been so caught up in training that I hadn't had a chance to share my true feelings with her.

Kala, with her passionate and free-spirited nature, always drew attention at the gatherings. But now, she was radiating Martell's scent. I suspected that, even though they hadn't reconciled yet, Martell had already become utterly captivated by her. "Luna!" Ethan seemed to embrace my role more than even I did.

"I'm so glad that you've made Alpha this happy. He's completely crazy about you, so please, don't make our Alpha sad again! You're the first one to make him lose his mind and do something like this to his own brother."

He was practically trembling with excitement, and if he weren't worried that Sebastian. might rush in to kill him, he would have grabbed my hand.

"Don't worry! Ethan, he's my love. I would never do what you're thinking. If anyone could hurt him, it certainly wouldn't be me. He's an Alpha, the Pack Leader-I would never harm him." I felt deeply moved by how fervently my lover was supported by people like him. "No... Luna, there are things you don't yet know. The only person who could truly hurt the Alpha is you. The one he loves has always been his greatest weakness. But let's not dwell on heavy matters. No matter what happens in the future, I just hope you and Alpha will have a happy ending."

He spoke with the dignity and resolve of a knight, and I returned his words with a warm. smile. Though I still had my doubts about his true intentions, I chose to think positively of him for now.

I understood that hosting this kind of event and inviting us was likely Ethan's way of gaining broader acceptance of my position from the elders. Though I couldn't be sure if Ethan had hidden motives, I'd seen nothing yet that broke any rules..

Finally, I saw an opening near Sebastian and quietly made my way over.

"There's no need to be so cautious; dealing with those people took enough of my energy." He spoke softly, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead.

With plates in hand, we found a quiet, secluded corner.

"Hungry, Melissa?"

He held out a plate piled high with food, his fingers idly playing with the curls that fell down my back.

"A bit," I replied, and he nodded.

"I brought some venison-I hope you like it. And here are some flatbreads; you can roll one up and feed me."

"And what about me?" I teased, smiling as I followed his request, making a roll. We each took a bite from opposite ends, and just as we almost touched, I playfully bit down, snapping it in half.

"Such a mischievous Luna!" he laughed. "We need to take notes on how he hosts this dinner party. Next month, we'll officially announce our engagement so everyone knows you're going to be my Luna. I introduced you to the council last time, and our influence over the allied Alphas has been strong lately. We should start making arrangements for the

venue."

Hearing this, a wave of nerves washed over me.

After the tense moments with his family, I wasn't sure if Debra would ever truly accept me. I didn't want Sebastian to be troubled by these issues either, especially since his brothers weren't as easygoing as they appeared. I was determined not to make things.

worse.

"All right, I'll observe carefully," I said, leaning in to kiss his car, knowing it was his weak spot.

As expected, I saw his eyes darken slightly. But this was a public setting, and even if he felt a bit of tension, we couldn't exactly release it here.

"Martell mentioned that your physical strength has improved a lot recently. Maybe you don't have to push yourself so hard in training."

Sebastian's fingers brushed the light calluses on my hands, and I sensed his worry.

"I know I have a lot of weaknesses to work on. They're constant reminders that I need to keep improving; otherwise, danger could come at any time."

Elliott once told me he'd always protect me, which is why I focused on family, on caring for Aaron. But when it mattered most, he had his own people to protect. I needed to make sure no one could see my weaknesses.

"Mad Dog never fights unfair. He'll do whatever it takes to get what he wants, then fight back with all his might."

He hadn't expected my mind to be so sharp. His eyes now held a clear sense of trust and admiration.

Quickly composing myself, I let go of any lingering thoughts of Aaron and Elliott.

I was about to say something more when I noticed Phoebe, standing uncertainly between Kala and Martell, casting me a desperate look for help. Chapter 40: Strange Relations

"What's going on?" I asked, and Martell glanced at me, letting out a helpless sigh...

"Kala seems determined to mess up our life. I gave her a second chance, but now she's ready to throw it all away."

He frowned, casting a look in my direction, while Kala, looking completely unbothered, walked over to pour herself a glass of juice.

"Geoffrey hurt you-he abused you, body and soul-but lumping all men together with that monster is wrong, my dear."

I knew exactly what she was thinking. I also understood that Kala's behavior had more to do with the dark witch of the forest than anything else.

"I've moved out of his room and lost all interest in him. I'm looking for someone new, and he can do the same," Kala replied calmly, though Phoebe and I could both see the hurt she was hiding.

"Don't stay trapped in your past pain. If you do, we won't be able to help you. Start fresh, Kala. Believe in him one more time," I urged, truly hoping this wounded woman could replace some happiness. But she seemed as if she'd lost all faith in love.

"I don't have the courage to take that risk again! Melissa, I'm not like you. Someone doesn't have the strength like our Pack Leader; he can't even sever past ties. No one knows what I endured in that dark, desolate room. I lost my child, my health, my dignity as a Luna. He threw me to other men, treating me like a plaything! Even though I resisted, my husband still found it amusing, as if my life was his entertainment. And then he cherished another woman like she was priceless.. I can't go through that again. I just can't let it happen twice."

Kala's face held a look of immense suffering, and the way she fought back tears only made my heart ache more.

"I can't bear to be left with nothing again..."

Phoebe and I held her tightly, sharing a glance with Martell, one filled with silent. reproach.

"Honestly, I worry too. I worry that Sebastian's destined one will show up, and I fear falling into the same situation as before. That's why I cherish every moment we have now. If we lock ourselves away like this, the pain will follow us forever."

Sharing my thoughts with my friend made me feel a bit lighter.

"But he's going to bring his ex to your engagement party."

I was stunned, looking at Martell as if he'd lost his mind.

"I think we should talk about this more."
