Chapter 52: Interrogating the Maid

Chapter 52: Interrogating the Maid

Melissa's POV

Sebastian seemed to be facing some troubles, but I had no time to concern myself with his thoughts.

He hadn't joined me for breakfast, and honestly, I wasn't in the mood for it anyway.

Phoebe remained in a critical condition, still unconscious, and Kala spent most of her free time keeping her company.

I couldn't deny that my thoughts were completely consumed by Atrias Elliotson.

His letter had cast a shadow over my life, leaving me wondering how I could sever all ties with him.

After finishing his letter last night, I prayed to the Moon Goddess, hoping for things to stop spiraling out of control. I didn't deserve this treatment. His lingering obsession made me deeply uncomfortable-I already had a wonderful partner after all. Although our love was still very young, and even though we were still in the process of getting to know each other, with many issues and disagreements, we were both willing to accept it and let love take its course.

That's why I needed to put an end to Atrias Elliotson's feelings for me as soon as possible. It was the responsible thing to do for both of us.

Still, I couldn't understand it. We had only met once, barely exchanged more than a few words. How could I have left such a profound impression on him during a simple dance?

"What are you thinking about? You didn't even notice me," Sebastian's voice broke through my thoughts. I turned to replace him standing beside me, though I hadn't realized when he'd arrived.

"Do you want to join me for the interrogation? They brought back Winnie Harold's maid yesterday."

"I'd like Phoebe to come with us. She seems to have mastered the truth-singing chant. It's rare among werewolves-this woman might even have witch blood," Martell chimed in, his tone casual but insistent. I didn't agree. Phoebe needed proper rest and recovery.

I shot Sebastian a pointed look, silently asking the Alpha to put an end to this Gamma's foolish ideas.

"She'll need to regain consciousness first," Sebastian said, sighing as he patted Martell on the shoulder. Thankfully, Kala was around; otherwise, this clueless Gamma of his might end up single well into his old age. With a mix of tension and determination, we decided to interrogate Winnie Harold's

As we descended into the dark, damp corridors, I felt a sense of daze. I hadn't realized the Northlands harbored such grim and shadowy places.

What I hadn't expected, however, was to encounter Debra and Elder Edgar standing together as we approached. Their hostile glares bore into me, as though they were ready to throw me into one of the cells.

I couldn't hide my confusion. By now, Debra was supposed to have already left for Howl.

"What are you doing here?" It's evident that Sebastian was suppressing his anger; he's genuinely upset.

"Has the Northlands castle become a place for the council and Pack working groups to come and go as they please?"

His fury was palpable, and those present quickly lowered their heads, their faces shadowed by humility and fear.

"Alpha, the council requested that we examine the woman accused of treason." Seeing that Sebastian had no intention of letting them off, one of them quickly stepped forward to explain.

"And which member of the council has the authority to issue such an order? You all just obediently followed it without question?" Sebastian pressed, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. "This was a collective decision by the entire council! Betraying the Northlands warrants punishment," the man stammered, hurriedly producing a piece of documentation as proof. Sebastian didn't even glance at it. Instead, he tore it to shreds with a single motion.

"Get out. All of you, leave now!"

His commanding tone sent a ripple of tension through the air, even making me feel a pang of unease. In moments like this, his authority was absolute and unyielding.

"No! This concerns my son's innocence! Sebastian, you can't do this!" Debra's voice trembled with emotion, her tone desperate as if she were clinging to some fragile hope of proving her point.

"Are you saying Vince's sentencing was flawed? Or do you have another son who's done something questionable?"

Sebastian had initially harbored some doubts about Geraint, but Debra's strange behavior only deepened his suspicion.

"Alpha, we heard you detained someone, so we came to see for ourselves," Elder Edgar spoke up, his curiosity evident as he tried to glean more about the situation.

"You heard already? We only brought the prisoner in last night, and by this morning, the

council already knows? It seems the council's capabilities have grown quite impressive- keeping tabs on the Alpha's every move," Sebastian replied sharply, his voice laced with controlled disdain. Though I had no intention of interfering, the elder's words piqued my suspicion.

"Leave now, before I lose my patience completely," Sebastian commanded with an imposing authority that brooked no argument.

With that, he swiftly drove them out.

Sebastian then led us to a room where, despite supposedly being unconscious, Basil appeared lively, deeply engaged in interrogating the woman before him.

"What could you possibly gain from this? Your owner has already abandoned you!" Basil barked, his frustration seeping into every word.

"I've told you, I have nothing to say to you! Why am I even imprisoned here? That woman you call Luna posed a threat to my lady-that's why she left. What's so wrong with that? Are

you seriously charging me with treason? Don't think that just because you're Beta, I'll cower before you. We've done nothing wrong!"

The maid clenched her lips tightly, her defiance unyielding as she shot back at Basil.

"Are you honestly going to deny that your mistress forged the Alpha's signature and seal, stirring chaos among the Packs in other regions? Stop defending her! You know the truth, so why won't you speak? Instead, you side with your owner and continue causing trouble for us. Enough of this madness!" Basil's patience was fraying, his voice rising with anger.

Impatient, Martell grabbed the whip from within the cell and lashed it forcefully onto the floor.

"Stop looking at Luna-look at me! Woman, what's your name? I'm curious why you're so intent on opposing us. Or is it that the Harold family itself wants to go against us?"

At his words, the maid's expression faltered, a flicker of unease crossing her face.

"This has nothing to do with the family. It's just that my lady was heartbroken after the Alpha confirmed his Luna as his mate. That's the truth. I've made myself clear, and I hope you'll believe me!"

She looked directly at Sebastian with a somewhat complicated expression.

"Are you sure that's the truth?"

A powerful aura radiated from Sebastian, so intense that even I felt its suffocating pressure. My stomach churned uneasily.

The maid, however, was clearly struggling to withstand it. Sweat beaded on her forehead, her vision wavered, and she clenched her fists tightly to keep herself awake.

"My lady didn't do anything! Alpha, don't let others deceive you. Only those closest to you and the great families truly support you. My lady has never done anything wrong. 79.6%

Please don't misunderstand her-this is all I know. She was never like this before."

The maid's gums were almost biting through to the point of bleeding, and her tears rolled down in large drops.

"And you're still defending them? Look at your current situation-no one cares whether you live or die."

Sebastian was surprised by the woman's loyalty to her master, and he was somewhat touched by it.

"Alpha! Open your eyes and look at the woman by your side! She has clouded your vision. Have you never considered that she might be conspiring with those other women, plotting to divide the strength of the Northlands among themselves? The Harold family and the other elders are on high alert, yet here you are, oblivious! She's likely waiting for the perfect moment to aid other Packs in carving up our power. And yet, you've fallen for her -you even plan to spend the rest of your life with her!"

"Even two of them-you're all blind, aren't you? Our home was destroyed, and their actions now could just be for show. Deep down, they still love their mates. Don't let her cause you to lose the genuine support of your people."

Her words were heartfelt, as though she was trying to move Sebastian emotionally.

"Your explanation means nothing to me. I suggest you think carefully. If you keep saying the same thing later, don't blame me for using spells against you. You should know you're just a minor piece in this grand scheme. Your life holds no value to us." I stared at her coldly, my gaze unwavering. To be slandered repeatedly like this-anyone would lose their temper!
