(Bk 2) Chapter 3
Lexi's POV
Amidst the screams and cheers, I noticed him coming towards us, what I had felt initially becoming much more apparent. It was like everything around me faded away and I felt an overwhelming connection to him. My emotions were a jumbled mess of shock and disbelief. Darcey purred. "Don't say it. Please don't say it," I pleaded desperately. Hearing it would make this truth I had found out undeniable.
"Mate!" she growled. My school uniform and backpack fell from my hands in shock. My limbs feel weak. It was official. I found my mate at school of all places. Anger surged through me. I didn't want this, not now, not when I was finally beginning to get a grip on my life again. Not when I wanted to start afresh and leave everything behind. This was totally unfair to me, my whole life and plans have just been turned upside down in an instant.
I desperately tried to control my feelings but it was challenging. I wanted to scream out of anger and run away but at the same time, I couldn't deny the attraction pulling me closer to him. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and I felt lost. His blank eyes widened in surprise when he stood in front of me. The girls were nudging me with their excited bodies and I was very sure their screams were deafening but I couldn't have cared less.
I stared back into his piercing grey eyes with anger. His short dark brown hair was styled to perfection. He towered over me because he was way taller than I was. He had full eyebrows and pale skin. With every second he stood close to me, I felt fear deep down. Fear of the unknown and what this would mean for my future. His eyes seemed to be silently questioning who I was but my glare seemed to convey that I wasn't interested in any conversation with him whatsoever. With a newfound determination etched on my face, I picked up my backpack and school uniform that had been trampled upon. The muffled excited screams made their way back to my ears, fully.
"Mason, have this orange juice. It's perfect to drink in the morning. I squeezed it out myself," a girl screamed out, stretching a bottle of juice towards him. Mason. So that was my newfound nightmare name. "Mason, I thought of you when I was buying this new hair dryer. It would make your hair better than it already is," another yelled excitedly. I stared at their hands, they were all holding different gifts ranging from cakes, flowers, and beverages to other things I didn't bother to care about.
I wouldn't have expected anything less from him. Using his looks and popularity to lead girls on and extort them. That was the only thing they were good at. With one final hateful and bitter glare towards him, I turned around and pushed my way out of the crowd. I walked towards my locker and opened it.
"Attention students, you are all loitering in the hallway and causing a ruckus. I hope you all remember the punishment for that?" a voice boomed loudly from the speakers. The girls all groaned. I felt Mason walking past me, some girls chasing after him still holding onto their gifts.
"Anyone caught down there will spend the rest of the day in detention. Make yourselves useful and get to class," the voice ordered. Everyone started to slowly move out making the once crowded hallway not so crowded anymore. I dropped my backpack in the locker and headed to the restroom to get changed. I opened the door and headed in luckily for me, it was empty. Exactly what I wanted. I needed to vent.
I screamed out loud kicking the waste bin hard with my leg repeatedly. Finally unleashing all the anger I was feeling away.
"Relax Lexi, try to calm down," Darcey said. I scoffed.
"Calm down? How can I calm down after what just happened?" I asked in disbelief.
"We do not question the will of the moon goddess. Everything happens for a reason. This too happened for a reason," she explained.
"What reason? What f*****g reason?" I asked angrily, kicking the bin again.
"We would have to be patient to replace out. Although I'm also shocked, we've found our mate..."
"Never make the mistake of repeating that word ever again. We will pretend whatever happened just now never happened. We came to this school to start afresh and we are going to do just that. Finding out we have a mate isn't going to change anything," I said, bending down to pick up the bin.
"It isn't?" she asked curiously.
"Of course not. He's going to go his separate way and we will go ours. Everything is going to be perfectly fine," I assured as I brought out my uniform and began to change. After changing, I walked back to my locker and picked out the books I will be needing for my first class. I walked into the class and sat on the empty seat I could replace at the back. I suddenly heard chairs scraping around and saw swift movements. In the blink of an eye, the four girls I had met earlier were sitting in front of me. They all stared at me in deep thought. "She doesn't look like someone that came from another country. Yet, I've never come across her before. Which is weird because I know everybody," the first girl said, still staring at me. She had light brown hair and black eyes. Ana was written on her name tag. "She also doesn't look like she came from a wealthy home. She must be one of the scholarship students from a local family," the second one replied. She had blonde hair and green eyes. Mia was written on her name tag. The other two nodded in agreement. The third one had short black hair and big brown eyes. From her name tag, I knew her name was Evelyn. The fourth one had long dark brown hair, almost black with black eyes. Carla was written on her name tag.
"You know us right?" Ana asked, flipping her hair behind her.
"I have no idea who you all are," I replied nonchalantly. They gasped.
"We are the main four. Everyone in this school knows us and you should too," Mia retorted. They all nodded.
"So, what do you think of our prince charming? Handsome right?" Evelyn asked dreamily.
"Who...," I trailed. They gave me a dirty glare.
"Mason of course. The school's heartthrob," Carla cut me off impatiently.
"I didn't see anybody like that," I denied my eyes fixated on my books.
"W..what?" they stuttered. I knew they were all fan girls. I was in a terrible mood already and I didn't want them to constantly keep talking about the person I hated most right now. It only fueled my anger. Thankfully, the teacher came in. "Everyone settle down," he said. The main four or whatever they called themselves stood up and walked to their seats. The class became quiet.
"We have a new student present here today. Everyone let's give a warm welcome to Lexi Jones," he announced. Some of them applauded as I made my way to the front of the class to introduce myself. Lots of curious eyes stared back at me. "I can do this," I mentally assured myself. I took a deep breath to calm myself. Smiling widely, I started.
"Good morning everyone. My name is Lexi Jones and I'm so excited to be here in Crescent high school as one of you. I hope we will all learn together, gain experiences and get along well," I said to them all. They chuckled. "Learn? Who comes to school to do that these days?" someone muttered and they chuckled again. I stared at them self-consciously.
"That's enough everyone. Miss Jones has been home-schooled all her life. This is her first time entering a high school so be nice to her," the teacher ordered. I turned my gaze sharply towards him. How did he replace out about that?
"Miss Jones, you can go back to your seat now," he said. I suddenly heard cheers and applause, especially from the girls. I wondered who it was because seconds ago, they were laughing at me. I turned toward everyone's gazes and of course, it was him again. Mason. His eyes met with mine and the smile that was etched on my face as I introduced myself disappeared.
I glared at him angrily before storming to my seat.
"Settle down everyone! Settle down," the teacher repeated trying to calm the noisy class. He glanced at me before taking a seat in the back seat at the other edge of the classroom. That's right. He should stay far away from me else I don't know what I might do if he comes close or even speaks to me. My first day was almost ruined but I won't let that happen. I am in control of my life and it's going to remain that way.
