Pedigree
Chapter 22

It’s funny how in moments when things should be working out, they surprisingly don’t fall into place. I keep trying to start my car but to no avail, angry tears are falling rapidly and I just want to get out of here but I am stuck.

‘Fuck!’ I yell hitting the steering wheel as the tears continue falling

‘Fuck!’ I yell again more tears falling and this time the door opens, VK stands there looking at me with pity.

‘I will drive you home.’ He tells me

I get my phone and get out of the car, but just before we can get into his car I stop to look at him.

‘You know what VK, I am not going anywhere with you.’ I say opening my phone so that I call a cab driver using my Ulendo app.

‘I am right here, there is no need to call a cab.’

‘Of course there is because I am not going anywhere with you.’ I say wanting to walk away but he holds me

‘Kasweka come on.’

‘VK let go of me.’ I say angrily looking at the part where his hand is

I can see the sorrow in his eyes but at this point I don’t care, he had no right to dig into my past.

‘Kasweka I am sorry that you had to replace out the way you did, honestly I was as shocked as you were.’

‘You think I am shocked?’

He doesn’t respond, the way he is looking at me I can tell that he is surprised because he obviously has no idea why I am reacting the way I am.

‘VK you had to right to dig into my past, you had no right to uncover things that my parents hid from me. it is my past for a reason and if at some point they wanted me to replace out about it they would have told me, you had no right.’ I say tears starting to fall once again, the pain is coming back to me. the hurt rushing back all at once I feel weak in my knees.

‘Babe I am sorry, honestly it wasn’t my intention to uncover that part of your past.’

‘But you were looking for something were you not?’

‘Babe.’

‘Don’t babe me VK, just don’t. you had no right.’ I say unlocking my phone

‘Okay I won’t be the one to drive you home, I will ask the driver to take you. At least I will know that you are safe.’

I don’t respond, that sounds like a better plan. I would rather go with anyone else than with him and this is the last of me he is seeing because he has ruined my life and I will never forgive him for this.

He calls the driver and gives him instructions, after a few minutes one of his cars pull in front of us – I think there is another car park behind the house or something.

‘I will check on you tomorrow.’

‘This is the last of me you are seeing VK, stay away from me.’

‘I will check on you.’ He says sternly

I walk away silently and get into the car, we drive in barren silence. My mind is everywhere but here and that is why I don’t realize when we get home.

Despite me not being in a good space I manage to say my thank yous to the driver and immediately get into bed, I put my phone on flight mode and close my eyes. But what was supposed to be an early night turns out to be one of the longest nights of my life, I turn and toss until the sun comes out. I have a terrible headache and I wish I could just stay home but I have a very important meeting with some potential clients so my feelings would have to be put on hold.

I take a bath and settle into a black body hugging dress that is just below my knees, match it with brown stilettos and a Gucci handbag that Aunt Ivy bought for me on my last birthday. Today I decide not to wear any of my wigs, I leave the cornrows to breath and my professionally done makeup makes up for the plain hair. I take a shot of americano hoping that it wakes up my insides, by the time I am leaving home after a cab comes through I have put all my emotions behind and I am ready to take on the day.

After thirty minutes I am at the office, I walk in holding my head high and greeting a few familiar faces on my way to the office.

‘Did you forget your hair home?’ Gymani asks immediately I pass her desk

‘Good morning to you too.’ I respond not minding her

I get to my office and put my handbag in the closet where I usually keep it, after that settle into my desk. The janitor usually turns on my computer when he is done cleaning so I get right into my emails and responding to them.

My office line starts buzzing and I keep looking at it, whoever is calling might have to call me later because right now I am very busy and I can’t afford wasting any time.

When it drops for the fourth time I personal line starts ringing but I choose not to pick up, it rings a couple of times and still I don’t pick up until finally Gymani walks into my office without knocking.

‘What is the point of having an office line and a personal line if you wont pick any of them?’

‘I am busy Gymani, please close the door on your way out.’ I say without looking at her

‘Mr. Kaluba Jnr would like to see you in the board room.’ She says

‘Can’t it wait?’

‘Unfortunately it can’t.’ she says walking out

I breath out really hard before standing up, whatever Ernest is calling me for better be good because this morning is super busy for me.

I get into the board room and I am shocked to replace both the Kaluba siblings in there.

‘Miss Ng’uni please take a seat.’ Vaughn says, I do and wait for them to start speaking.

‘We wanted to be the first to tell you before the board makes it official, we are sending you to Solwezi.’

‘What?’

‘Dad has been having meetings back and forth and he just secured an already built house that he is turning into a boarding house, we need you those ends to be managing it.’

I swallow hard, just a few days ago it was Livingstone and now Solwezi?

‘When was this decision made?’

‘Last night, we were on a call with him and he informed us. The board has accepted too.’

‘You start work there on Monday.’ Vaughn adds

‘Congratulations Ms. Ng’uni, this is a great opportunity for you to showcase what you can do.’

‘Thank you, now if you can excuse me.’ I say not buying their smiles, there is more to all this because these two can’t be nice to me for anything.

I walk to my office and as if my morning is not bad enough I replace VK there.

‘You must be kidding me.’ I say turning around to walk away

‘Ms. Ng’uni.’ He says his voice serious, his children are in sight and a few employees.

‘I will send my resignation letter Sir.’ I say after turning around, my voice sounding professional.

I walk towards the bathrooms and hold on to the sink trying to breath in and out, I am not sure what just happened but God knows I will regret this. I am still trying to gather my thoughts when the door opens and closes then locks.

‘VK what are you doing?’ I ask but he doesn’t respond, instead he walks towards me and lifts me by the bum – putting me on the sink before kissing me without a care in the world.

‘You are going to walk away from me if that is what you want to, you are going to quit your job if you want to.’ He says roughly patting my legs before reaching for my lady parts, he moves my pant and starts playing with my clit before dipping his finger inside. A gasp escapes my mouth

‘VK.’ I moan

‘You can do anything you want but I won’t allow you to disrespect me like that.’

‘Fuck.’ I say my eyes rolled at the back of my head, I am almost cuming but just before I can reach climax he pulls out his finger and it takes me a few seconds to put myself together.

‘You can send that resignation letter to your direct bosses, good bye Kasweka.’

I get off the sink and chuckle

‘You are really going to walk out now after turning the tables around?’ I ask the pain returning as if I wasn’t at the mercy of his finger just now

‘So I replace out that I am not my father’s child through your digging and you are going to walk out of my life like nothing happened?’

‘Just wow VK.’ I say before unlocking the door and walking out of the bathroom
