Walker’s POV

Typically, rogues are alone, and I wonder why the rogues are all together. Paris and I stand back, looking at the group trying to surround us. I mind-link Jonathan with what is happening and tell him to get the humans out of here as fast as possible, as we do not know how many rogues there are here. Jonathan is reluctant to leave Paris and me alone, but he has no choice, as we need to get the humans to safety first. Jeffrey and Elena help Jonathan to get the humans away while we keep the rogues busy.

“I thought rogues were lone wolves? Why are you in a group?” I ask.

“There is strength in numbers, King of Werewolves. The human army has been hunting us, and the only way we can defeat them is to stay close to each other. We formed a pack for rogues only. It does not mean we want to be like weaklings who want to protect humans. It only means we help each other fight humans. We are not always together, but when one of us needs help, we will go and help him. You let old crazy go. Glad he is gone, as he would protect humans from us,” The eldest of the rogues says.

“So why did you become rogues?” Paris asks.

“Because we lost everything, and you are just trying to take our attention away from the fight. You will die today, King and Queen of werewolves,” The eldest says.

“What is your name, rogue?” I ask. If it gives its wolf a name, the human part of the rogue is gone.

“Ghost,” It answers, and I know the human side of the wolf is dead.

“So you killed your human side?” I ask.

“It died long ago when our mate died,” Ghost says. He starts getting ready to attack us. They walk upright to move fast, but Paris and I are armed with silver swords and bullets in our guns. They must not know this, or they are too cocky to realize that we are stronger than rogues. They must be used to fighting humans and must have forgotten how strong the Kingdom is. Some of our men have scanned the rest of the area to ensure that there are no other rogues around so Jonathan and the rest can safely take the humans to safety. They join us from behind, and the rogues realize too late that there are more of us.

“You tricked us, King! You think you are so clever. We have fought more than you are,” The rogue laughs, and I think he is a little crazy as he does not realize we are werewolves and not humans. Humans are weaker than werewolves, and you can fight at least three times the number of humans than werewolves. Or he is overconfident as he beat so many humans. He must have forgotten how it is to fight other wolves. Paris and I smile at him, and we start mocking him.

“You think you can fight us because you can beat humans?” Paris asks.

“He must have forgotten how to fight since he only fights weak humans,” I also mock him. We know it will make him furious, and it will make him angry. We want him mad, as we know you make mistakes when you fight with anger. He attacks, and I can see the hatred in his eyes. Ghost is a killing machine. He wants to kill, and he does not care who he kills. I know he has no human side anymore. He attacks with one thing in his mind: to kill and kill fast, but he misjudges us as we are faster than he is, and Paris and I get our silver swords out before he can even reach us.

Paris cuts off the claw grabbing at her, and I stick my sword through his heart. The others howl as they start attacking us, but we are ready for them, and we only fight them in human form. We know rogues have no sense of danger, and their only goal is to kill. They do not care about the one we just killed and start their attack on us, forgetting about our men behind them. Our men start fighting with us, and we have all the rogues die in no time. I look at Paris, who is also covered in b***d like I am. We go to a little stream nearby and clean ourselves before we run to the humans, Jonathan, and the rest. We do not know if there are more rogues in these parts, and we will need to get the humans to safety as soon as possible.

“This is what we are made for. To protect innocent humans,” Paris says. I know she feels better now that we are protectors again, not killers.

“I know, baby. I know killing humans upsets you, and I am glad you can see that we are still protectors of the innocent,” I say. Paris smiles at me, and I k**s her on the lips. She is my everything. I know how wolves can go rogue. I am not sure I will be able to hold on to my human side if she should die. I love my mate and am glad she is a fighter like me and that we can protect each other because we will be nothing without each other.

“I love you,” I whispered to her.

“I love you,” She whispers back.

We run for a while before seeing Jonathan and the rest in front of us. They are resting as it is hard for humans to keep up with us. The women look tired, like they have not slept for a while. The nearest human town is about two hours away from us, but it will take a little longer for them. We need to remember that humans are weaker than us. As we get up to walk again, we hear a vehicle approaching us. We have our devices and know that the human army can not detect that we are wolves. Still, we are ready to fight if we have to. It is rangers, and we are relieved as we can leave the humans with them. They have a jeep that can take them to the town.

“What are you guys doing out here? Do you know how dangerous it is here? We have had a few wild animal attacks lately,” One of the rangers says.

“We know these parts, but we found these people that said something stalked them,” I say.

“Did you see what stalked you?” The ranger asked the humans with us.

“No, but it was bigger than any animal we ever saw,” One of the women answers.

“We will be fine if you can take them to safety. We know these parts and where and not to go,” Paris says. We are dressed like hikers, and the rangers look at us skeptically.

“Are you sure? We can take you with us,” The ranger says.

“You do not have enough space for all of us, and we are hiking in numbers,” I say.

“True, but be careful out there. We do not know what is out there,” The ranger says. I feel sorry for the rangers as their army must not inform them of all the dangers. Rogues are not something to play with. We need to scan this wood and make sure that all the rogues are gone. We can not let the poor rangers and other humans hiking here be in danger. It will take us a few days, but we will have to do it to keep the humans in these parts safe. We must protect humans and the Kingdom, and the rest of what we must do can wait until we have cleared this area. We will have to remove everything in these areas anyway. As we do know, we will have to get the rogues worldwide in order to save not only our species, but also humans. We might as well start here. We know the hunters will also begin to clean the area around them from rogues and make sure the human army replaces nothing there anymore. The military will think the wolves have moved on, and we hope they do not come to the Kingdom. That is why we need to get our little gadgets in place before the humans look for the wolves and hopefully pass our villages, as they will see no wolves with their devices.

We walk away back into the woods, and we take care of the bodies of the rogues’ bodies. We have to make a mass grave and throw their bodies in there, and Mariam uses her magic to cover it up. No one will ever notice the mass grave, and it is all covered, and it looks like nothing ever happened there. I am glad we have Mariam with us as we move through the woods to replace out if there are other rogues.

As we run through the woods, we come across a cave, and we can smell the rotten meat. Rogues sometimes smell like rotten meat, and their lairs are often full of their prey’s rotten bodies as they do not eat all the creatures they kill. They sometimes keep human women for their pleasure for weeks, even months, as they have needs like every other creature. It disgusts me, but that is how rogues are when they have no human side. They become like animals. We walk into the cave, and I wonder if it is the lair of one of the wolves we killed or if there are more rogues around here. We hear the growl from inside, and we know there is a rogue inside.

“What do you want from me, King and Queen of wolves?” It growls.

“You are a killer,” I say.

“Yes, I am, but I am not one of your kind. I was made this way,” He growls.

“What do you mean you were made this way?” Paris asks.

“The humans made me a werewolf, and I am trained to kill,” It growls back at us.

“Show yourself so we can see if we can help you,” I say. Out of the shadows comes a half-wolf and half-human creature, but we can sense it is not like us. Yet, it knew we were the King and Queen of werewolves.

“How did you know we are the King and Queen of werewolves?” Paris asks.

“I can feel it like every other wolf, but I did not ask to be like this. I do not know how to be a werewolf, and I do not know anything about being a werewolf,” The creature says.

“Do you kill humans?” I ask.

“No, I have never killed a human, although we were trained to do so,” He says.

“So there is more or you?” I ask.

“Yes, but I escaped their lab, and that is why I am hiding here,” He says.

“How did they turn you into a wolf?” Paris asks.

“They made a wolf scratch us, but they trained us to be killers,” He says.

“So you are a true wolf, as humans can be turned by a scratch or a bite of a wolf as long as you live until the next full moon and shift the first time you are a werewolf,” I say.

“I hate the people who did this to me and my fellow soldiers. We did not sign up for it; they used us as soldiers and called us dogmen. I know nothing of being a wolf, and I am lonely and feel I do not belong anywhere,” The once-human soldier says.

“Come with us. We will help you,” Paris says. They will have to stop humans from making werewolves, as they do not know about the experiments the humans are doing on their species. It is disgusting, and those poor humans have no chance to learn to be werewolves. It is one thing being born one and another to being made one. You hardly get humans that are turned into werewolves. If you turn one by accident, that human is your responsibility to help transform. That is why they at first felt he was not like them. He was made a werewolf, and no one can blame the werewolf that scratched him. His people want to make super soldiers, and they are using werewolves to do so.

“What is your name?” I ask.

“Peter and my wolf are called Grey. At first, I thought I was going crazy hearing the thing talk in my head, and he is now my only friend in this world I know nothing about,” Peter says.

“Well, we are your friends now and will help you,” I say as we take the wolf and help him to return to his human form and not stay half-wolf and half-human all the time. It takes a real wolf to know how to shift, and over time, we will teach him to do so and help him to live among us and belong again.
