Salute To The General -
Chapter 1854
Chapter 1854
With regards to cab members, Clifford remained the secretary and his deputy was still Zion Lucas. Along with eight other cab members, the group of ten would assist the new president in governing the nation.
Hansel shook Garrett's hand firmly in the midst of resounding applause and countless camera flashings while Garrett uttered the words under his breath, "Thank you."
Hansel smiled in return. "The fate of the nation and its people is officially in your hands now. Don't disappoint us."
From afar, Clifford's eyes darkened and turned inexplicable while he watched Garrett address the spectators as the newly installed President of Eurasia.
The beginning of Garrett's speech was within everyone's expectations. However, five minutes into his speech, he dropped the biggest bomb that startled every occupant in that conference room that he intended to re-introduce the
position of the Chief Military Governor, whose job was to protect and strengthen Eurasia!
A Chief Military Governor!
This unexpected announcement had everyone's jaw dropping to the floor. Government representatives, journalists, the audience of the live TV broadcast... Everyone was stunned.
The shock was understandable, as the nation used to have this position before it was rendered obsolete many years ago.
The person who held this title was afforded the highest military command across the nation. At least this had been the case until a few decades ago when the then-President decided to dissolve this position and take over the military power himself.
In other words, the past few presidents had been both the government's chief administrator and commander-in-chief of the military.
Therefore, when Garrett announced his plan to reenact the post of the Chief Military Governor and appoint someone he trusted to fill this role, everyone was surprised.
The scenario of presidents reclaiming military power was regularly witnessed in countries all over the world. Never had one done the opposite to relinquish such power.
The attendants in the conference hall and those in front of the TV were holding their breaths for such a massive executive order from a new President.
The first person to recover from the bewilderment was Clifford, who stood up and spoke out loudly, "President Woods, the position of Chief Military Governor has been rendered obsolete for quite some time. May I suggest that we consult all the cab members before deciding whether to reenact the role?"
Garrett looked at Clifford and replied in a calm manner, "This decision was not made impromptu; I have given this matter considerable thought before coming to this resolve."
The man of the hour continued his address to the press. "Those of you who are familiar with my political resume will know that my expertise and achievements lie with administrative and governance work, whereas military and defence are my weak spots.
“But fear not, as I've taken the
initiative to address this pertinent
issue. will carefully select a person
whom believe will be able to suit this title and perform what this job entails."
Garrett's voice was becoming more enthusiastic as he continued to share his vision, "In my term, I vow to fully utilize all the resources available to improve areas such as living standard, economy, and technological advancement. As for the Chief Military Governor, he will first be tasked with military reform and national defense. I firmly believe that together, we will build a better, stronger Eurasia! We will be a nation that can compete on the world stage!"
Silence ensued. Most people were still unable to snap out of their befuddlement. Some were looking at each other for an indication that no one was willing to comfortably provide.
It was not their fault, for nobody seemed able to come to a well-informed conclusion as to the implications of this out-of-the-blue decision by
the new President,
An applaud was then clearly heard across the crowd, its origin was none other than the retired President Windsor, who was now giving a standing ovation.
Lucas Ziegler and Zach Hill were next to regain their composure and quickly followed suit.
Zion and his colleagues stole a quick glance at each other before they also joined in the applaud. Before long, the applaud had gained momentum and was spreading across the conference hall.
Garrett smiled at the crowd. "Thank you. Thank you for the support and confidence you entrust in me." What followed was a press conference, in which reporters started to fire their questions one after another.
Their questions were mainly on the novel administrative policies, with the elephant in the room being the reenactment of the Chief Military Governor.
A curious reporter asked, "President Woods, I understand that you intend to separate administration from military and defense policies. May I know who you have in mind for this task?"
Everyone held their breaths for the President's response to this million-dollar question.
It was customary for a newly elected president to reshuffle the cab and other high-level positions to form a new think-tank.
People could not help but wonder which qualified person would the President choose to handle that very important job.
Upon hearing that question, Garrett
conjured up an image of a lanky and
strongly built figure with eyes as deep as the universe, dressed in a handsome military uniform. But he
was not ready to give anythBut he
away. Instead, he let out a mysterious smile. "I do have a
е
short-listed person on my mind. His name will be revealed in good time."
