Salute To The General -
Chapter 1938
Chapter 1938
Webb and Quent eyed each other and a disparaging smile appeared on their faces.
Quent took the lead and answered his question. "Turns out you're really a deserter. But that aside, I have to say you really surprised me. You have no shame at all. You even have the balls to show up."
Nathan ignored his ridicule and dived right into the topic. "Quent Douglas, right? If I remember correctly, you work for Clifford. I can't help but wonder, have you not learned anything after years of serving Clifford? Who told you I was a deserter? Did the government release that information? Or did the Headquarters of the Chief Military Governor release it?"
Quent was suddenly at a loss for words.
Indeed, there was no official announcement saying Nathan was a deserter.
It was merely Clifford's own conjecture. When they could not replace Nathan after the war erupted, they came to that conclusion on their own.
Now that Nathan interrogated him, Quent was caught in a tight position all of a sudden. It was not like he could say it was Clifford who accused Nathan of being a deserter.
Seeing his dilemma, Nathan continued. "I hope you're aware that I still have my military rank. Do you know the penalty of slandering military officials?" Quent's evasive gaze wandered about aimlessly.
He suddenly realized that tackling Nathan was not as easy as he thought it would be.
"You're the one who went missing after the war. You can't blame the public for surmising what happened." Quent raised his voice hypocritically to cover up his disconcertment.
"You don't have to worry about those people, I won't let any one of them walk away with impunity," Nathan retaliated calmly.
"How dare you!" The veins on Quent's forehead bulged in fury.
"Well, there's still a lot more that I dare to do. I'll come to the Davier family later on, but now, let's talk about what you did to my wife, shall we?"
Speaking, Nathan's gaze hardened as it landed on Webb, who suddenly became inexplicably rigid under Nathan's glare.
Calm down, Webb Goldstein! Stop chickening out!
Nathan is not that powerful anymore. You have the whole Goldstein family behind you, and Mr. Davier too! Man up! Webb swept his gaze across the lounge. The multitude of skilled fighters assured him.
He cleared his throat and looked right back at Nathan in the eyes.
"You're late, Nathan Cross. The news is about to go on air. I'm sure there's gonna be something interesting on the news tonight. I really can't wait to know what it is."
He signaled at one of his subordinates, who swiftly took up the remote control and switched on the TV in the lounge.
The screen lit up and it was just time for the evening news.
To Webb and Quent's chagrin, there was not a single word about Penny at all. Instead, there were numerous mentions of the television crew being caught.
"Earlier this evening, an operation
was launched to target fake news and dishonest journalism. The authorities have apprehended several luminaries in the press including Channing TV's director, Abel Lange."
The screen showed a short video of Abel being caught right in his office by a group of men.
Webb and Quent were completely dumbfounded.
Even Penny and Kylie were shocked to hear the news. Their bewildered gaze shifted toward Nathan slowly, not knowing what had actually happened.
"I agree with you that this news is really interesting," Nathan finally replied.
"What did you do?" Webb questioned in anger.
Nathan took another puff of his cigarette nonchalantly without even looking at him. "Do you expect me to just sit and watch while you treat my wife like this? I will make sure you pay the price for humiliating her. Abel is getting a jail sentence since he's simply an accomplice. But as for you, I regret to say you won't be as lucky."
"What did you say?" Webb leaped to his feet in fury.
Nathan clicked his finger and the Elite Eight carried in the two black caskets they ordered earlier. They dropped the heavy caskets right in front of Webb and Quent.
Everyone was appalled.
"You probably didn't get what I said just now. I meant to say, your time is up."
