Salute To The General -
Chapter 2429
Cedric Zartman, Svend Zuckerberg, Olaf Jimmerson, Ulric Gilham were the four Patriarchs of the four Reclusive Families. Soon, news that they were leading the top fighters of their families to Brimmopolis to celebrate Cayden's birthday spread around.
The Reclusive Families were renowned, so Cayden's reputation reached a new height after everyone found out they had come all the way here to celebrate his birthday. Various consortiums and wealthy families had high hopes for Cayden. There was even a rumor circulating around that Cayden would be the next President and Chief Military Governor.
After hearing the news, Cayden's ex-colleagues and students were delighted beyond means.
However, Cayden was furious. He summoned Frode and demanded frostily, "I heard there's a rumor saying I'm the next President and Chief Military Governor?"
Isn't this good news? Why is he mad?
Despite thinking that way, Frode dared not revea his thoughts honestly.
He replied respectfully, "General Quillen, there is indeed this rumor, but I have no idea who is behind this."
Layden's expression was dark. "Find out if it's our men who spouted nonsense. If so, punish the culprit for spreading rumors."
Frode was stunned. "General Quillen, but-"
Gayden cut in icily, "You know I hate Nathan. You also know I can kill Nathan easily if I want to. But do you know why I didn't kill him personally?"
Frode blurted out, "Because Nathan isn't worthy for you to take action!"
Cayden explained, "There's another more important reason. I've just returned, and the President had just entrusted me with the important post. I need to keep a low profile instead of building enemies." Comprehension finally dawned on Frode.
General Quillen wanted to keep a low profile, but his subordinates kept flaunting that he is going to be the next President and Chief Military Governor. They are making enemies for him. No wonder General Quillen is upset.
He said hastily, "General Quillen, I shall investigate the matter right away. If it was one of us who spread the rumors, I shall make sure he gets punished severely."
Layden narrowed his eyes and uttered slowly, "I'm afraid that the culprit would be someone else with ulterior motives instead of one of us. He or she spread the rumors deliberately to ruin my reputation."
Frode was stunned. "Who could it be? Does the culprit have a death wish? How dare he create trouble for you?"
"I suspect it's Nathan," Layden declared. "He has been going against me since my return."
Hearing that, Frode chuckled. "You can relax. General Quillen. The four Reclusive Families have arrived at Brimmopolis today. They aren't here yet, for they wanted to kill Nathan first. After taking Nathan's life, they shall attend your birthday banquet tomorrow." Layden's expression relaxed slightly. "Great!"
At the same time, a foreboding feeling welled from within him.
I actually think it's the Chief Military Governor who spread the rumor instead of Nathan.
Judging from Matias' matter, he discovered that
the Chief Military Governor disliked him after he was announced to be the new Assistant Chief Military Governor.
Cayden's gaze landed on the globe on his desk and trailed to Eurasia's position. He squinted his eyes and thought, Chief Military Governor, after I kill Nathan and assume my post as the Assistant Chief Military Governor, we shall have some fun together. I'm certain that I can defeat a man who wears a mask all day to play tricks on everyone.
Right then, Nathan was drinking tea in the President's study. He suddenly let out sneeze.
The President, Garrett, asked, "Chief, do you have
a cold?
Nathan flashed a smile. "No. That sneeze came out of nowhere. Perhaps my family thought of me, or perhaps my enemy was cursing me."
Garrett chuckled. "You're the pillar of Eurasia, so the country and citizens are grateful for your contributions. However, our foreign enemies want you dead! Chief, you must protect yourself!"
