Salute To The General
Chapter 2430

"Thank you for your concern, President Woods. I'm still young, so I can still serve the country for twenty more years," Nathan replied cheerfully.

Garrett laughed. "I remember you're only thirty years old. Twenty years later, you'll be fifty. That's still young. General Quillen is only fifty this year, and he's still serving the country. You can't retire at fifty. Hmm, why don't you retire when you're eighty? That sounds great. Ha!" Nathan replied nonchalantly, "Once a soldier, always a soldier. No matter what age I retire, I shall put on my uniform and go to battle whenever

the country needs me.'

"That's great!" Garrett praised.

Nathan smiled without saying anything.

The President had invited him to the White House to have tea together. He knew the usually busy President wouldn't have extended an invitation for no reason.

Besides, the President had mentioned Cayden casually during their exchange earlier.

Garrett must've summoned me here because Cayden and I have created a commotion.

Indeed, Garrett changed the topic naturally. "Oh, talking about General Quillen. I suddenly recalled someone telling me that you had a conflict with him recently?" Nathan flashed a bitter smile. "It has reached your ears?"

"Brimmopolis is smaller than you imagine, so every little matter is known to everyone. Of course, I heard about it," Garrett explained with a smile.

Nathan asked, "President Woods, what did you hear?"

Garrett said, "The rumor circulating in public

states that the Chivalrous God of War and the God of War disliked each other, for they were from different generations. They had been at odds recently."

Nathan merely chuckled without saying anything.

Garrett continued, "The Great Cabinet reported to me in private that the Chief Military Governor was displeased at how General Quillen parachuted in and divided his power. Thus, Nathan took action and went against the Quillen family." Nathan asked, "President Woods, what do you think?"

Garrett picked up the teapot and refilled Nathan's cup. He responded indifferently, "What else can I think? You're my most trusted and admired general. I have high hopes for you. I've admired Layden for a long time, so I harbor high expectations for him and appointed him to be the Assistant Chief Military Governor. Both of you are equally important to me. Nathan, it isn't easy to be the head of a country!"

Nathan responded, "I'm ashamed to have caused trouble for you, President Woods. You must be torn."

Garrett picked up his teacup and gestured for Nathan to drink the tea. He took a sip before saying, "Do you think I made the wrong decision by making Layden the Assistant Chief Military Governor? Are you upset because he will interfere with your work?" He paused and shot Nathan a calm look. "If you're displeased, I can retract my order."

Nathan had no idea Garrett was being serious or was merely trying to sound him out.

He shook his head. "It has nothing to do with that."

Garrett was surprised. "It has nothing to do with my order? Is it a private grudge?"

Nathan shook his head yet again. "No."

Garrett knitted his brows. "Then what is it?"

A brief silence later, Nathan revealed, "I think something is off with Cayden!"

Hearing that, Garrett couldn't hide his shock.

He quickly regained his composure and put on a stern expression. "What is it?"

Nathan picked his cup up and sipped on his tea. "I'm still investigating him. Before I'm sure, I don't want to say anything bad about him."

Garrett fell silent at that.

A few seconds later, he said slowly, "I trust you, but you'll have to give me a deadline."

"How many days are there left until Layden has to report himself for duty?" Nathan inquired.

"Ten days," came Garrett's answer.

Nathan nodded. "All right. I'll replace out everything and report back to you before he reports for duty."

Garrett agreed. "Good. Ten days it is. If you fail to prove Layden has an ulterior motive, he'll be the Assistant Chief Military Governor."
