Salute To The General -
Chapter 2776
Unable to suppress her anger, Penny lashed out. "Didn't you say the first round is a traditional board game? Why did you bring out checkers instead of an actual traditional board game that originate from Eurasia?" Carlos and the rest were livid as well.
Szymon was clearly trying to trick them. Everyone had thought that a traditional board game would be a board game from Eurasia. Never would they expect it to be a game as modern as checkers.
Even though Nathan was skilled in many areas, they had never seen Nathan play checkers before. They were not even sure if Nathan could play the game. It was obvious that Szymon was trying to make things difficult for Nathan.
Szymon merely smiled at Penny. "Mrs. Cross, that's an unfair assumption. I only said that the first round shall be a traditional board game. Even though Eurasia has its own traditional board games, so does Eagleland! Checkers is one of them, even though it's relatively new compared to the board games from Eurasia. However, we're in Eagleland right now, not Eurasia. Of course, we should be playing our traditional board game, not yours!"
Penny's expression darkened. "You tricked us!"
Carlos began to argue as well. "Exactly. This is unfair. You should be playing actual traditional board games from Eurasia!"
Szymon scoffed. "We're in Eagleland. It's only natural for us to play a traditional board game of Eagleland. I never specified that we'll be playing a traditional board game of Eurasia. It's your fault for being overconfident and not asking for more details! Guess you shall reap what you sow!"
With that being said, he turned to look at Nathan before mocking, "Mr. Cross, if you don't know how to play checkers, just admit defeat and bark thrice. Consider it as payment for your rash actions."
All eyes were on Nathan.
Penny and the rest were all anxious while all those on Szymon's side were gloating.
Unexpectedly, Nathan remained as calm as ever.
With a light smile, he replied, "Who says I don't know how to play checkers? Since you insist that we play checkers, then let's play!"
He knows how to play checkers?
A look of surprise flickered across Szymon's eyes.
That piece of information was rather unexpected.
However, he quickly composed himself and sneered.
What's the use if he knows how to play checkers? That doesn't mean that he's good at it. He's definitely not a master.
Szymon had three thousand scholars living in his estate. Many of them could play the game. Some of them were even professional players of checkers.
He did not believe that a normal player like Nathan could win against the professionals.
Szymon raised his voice. "Westley!"
"At your service, Your Grace!"
A man dressed smartly in a suit walked out from among the crowd. Placing a hand in front of his chest, he bowed to Szymon.
So this is Westley'
Among the three thousand scholars, Westley was the best checkers player. He had even emerged as the champion in multiple competitions.
Szymon puffed out his chest in pride. "Westley, you and Mr. Cross are to play a round. You are not allowed to lose, got it?"
Upon hearing those words, Westley could not help but feel pressured. However, as he thought about it, he believed that Nathan was only a normal player. Instantly, his confidence returned.
Westley smiled. "Yes, Your Grace!' Turning his head toward Nathan, Westley nodded politely before taking a seat and arranging the pieces on the board.
Once he was done, he raised his head and flashed Nathan a smile. "Please take a seat, Mr. Cross!"
Once again, all eyes were on Nathan.
Penny and the rest began to panic as well.
Seeing that Nathan did not sit down, Szymon began to mock him. "Oh? You can't be thinking of quitting now, can you, Mr. Cross? Or are you afraid that you'll lose before you even try?" Nathan was beginning to feel mildly irritated by Szymon's arrogance. With a calm expression, he retorted, "It's just a game. Why would I quit?"
Szymon huffed. "Then, why haven't you taken your seat? What are you waiting for?"
Nathan replied calmly, "The first round is a game of traditional board game, the second round is a game of chess, and the third round is a duel between the two of us, am I correct? I think it's a waste of time if we go through the rounds one by one. Let's do them all together!" What? All three tests together?
That would mean that Nathan would have to play checkers, and chess, and fight against Szymon all at once. Everyone from the crowd was dumbfounded.
