Salute To The General -
Chapter 3408 What Are You Doing Here
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps emerged from outside, accompanied by a commotion. Seconds later, Franklin arrived with a squad of soldiers, their guns loaded and ready.
Apparently, the Cross Group research base had connections with the military. Hence, it was under the protection of the Channing military district. When the base was under attack, someone had silently activated the distress alarm.
Upon learning about the incident here, Franklin from the Channing military district quickly gathered his soldiers and rushed to provide support.
Arriving at the same time as Franklin were detectives from Channing and personnel from the Secret Service. What surprised Nathan the most was Hepburn and her subordinates, who also came to the base.
Franklin did not expect Nathan to arrive even faster than him, let alone resolve the situation by subduing the attackers and taking control of the scene.
He immediately stepped forward, greeted him with a salutation, and apologized, "I've come late. Please forgive me, Chief Cross."
The leaders of the other organizations also began to seek Nathan's forgiveness. They were all filled with fear and unease.
This research base was Cross Group's headquarters, and its owner was none other than Nathan.
The research base was under attack, and those in charge of the security of the premises were aware they would be held accountable for the incident. At this moment, they were terrified that Nathan would blame and punish them. Yet, Nathan shook his head. "You did nothing wrong. All the attackers are dead, anyway. Go on and assist the doctors to rescue the injured victims. Also, I want you to investigate where those attackers are from." Franklin, along with the leader of the detectives and the person in charge of the Secret Service at the scene, instantly responded, "Yes, Sir!"
Hepburn, who stood next to him, glanced silently at the bodies of Havik and others on the ground.
There were mixed reactions on her face, as she was both stunned and infuriated.
She was stunned to see Havik and the others dead. What infuriated her was that the Pope did not trust her.
What agitated her further was that Havik and his men, known for their ruthlessness, had the audacity to target Nathan's research base. In the end, they were caught in the act by Nathan and killed.
If Nathan were to replace out the identities of Havik and the others, the Curia's recently mended relationship with him would, once again, shatter.
How Hepburn wished she could slap Havik twice and question him.
She wanted nothing more than to return to the Curia immediately and confront Eugene IV.
However, at this moment, she could only steady herself, pretending not to recognize Havik.
Upon receiving instructions from Nathan, all the security personnel at the scene began to carry out the rescue operation in an orderly manner.
Francis, along with a few staff members, moved the unconscious Sevan to another room.
Fortunately, Sevan, being a vampire, had a resilient physique.
After Francis ordered the staff to give him a transfusion of fresh blood, he gradually regained his consciousness.
After learning that hundreds of people had died at the research base, including several scientific experts, the ashen-faced Nathan could no longer contain his anger.
Colin uttered, "Chief Cross, the heads of various departments are in the midst of clearing up the mess here. You must be exhausted. Go home and rest."
Upon learning that Sevan was all right, Nathan responded with a slight nod. "All right. Let's go."
Before leaving, he noticed Hepburn standing next to him.
He could not help but ask, "Hepburn, what are you doing here?"
Hepburn replied, "I was originally discussing matters with Director Donnovan at the police station when he received a notification that something happened at the Cross Group's research base. He then urgently summoned his
avel.n
subordinates to come and provide support. I heard that there were many casualties here, and since a few of my bishops are medically trained, I thought I might just come over and see what I can help."
Upon hearing that, Nathan said, "Thank you for your noble act."
Hepburn's eyes were overwhelmed with complicated emotions. She responded softly, "Just doing what I should do."
Nathan continued, "Well, we're almost done here. Shall we head back together?"
Hepburn replied, "Okay."
The two of them, along with their respective subordinates, left the research base.
When it was time to leave, Hepburn did not choose to get into her own car. Instead, she opted to ride in Nathan's vehicle.
Nathan has always considered Hepburn a friend, so he did not question her.
While traveling on the road, Nathan remained silent, clearly still immersed in anger and sorrow stemming from the attack on the research institute.
Hepburn glanced at Nathan, calmly
retrieved two bottles of mineral
water from her bag, and handed one to him. "Mr. Cross," she said, "What has been done is done. Please accept my condolences."
Nathan took the bottle of mineral
water, his voice laced with anger "If I
uncover the identity of the
mastermind, they'll face the full
consequences of their actions."
