Chapter 56 Can’t We Talk Calmly

The department heads could no longer hold back Preserving their jobs was the priority.

“Ms. Lawson, we can add your personnel in right now. We’ll definitely share resources with Savant Group!”

Another person chimed in, “I’ll send the project proposal to the relevant parties right now.”

Gwen nodded. “Complete it within the hour. Anyone who doesn’t meet this deadline can leave.” Her tone left no room for discussion.

The department heads hurriedly complied. They abandoned the meeting to make calls and arrange for their subordinates to act quickly.

While at it, they shot accusatory glances at Priscilla, leaving her feeling trapped and unable to respond.

“Ms. Pearson, you seem to like hearing stories from others,” Gwen sneered. “You think I got here solely by looks, so you could make things difficult for me?”

“Of course not! It’s all a misunderstanding. Please don’t take it personally, Ms. Lawson.” Priscilla’s tone was completely subservient now.

Just then, Gwen stood up from her chair and turned to face Jake, who had become invisible in the meeting. “The show of strength has ended, Mr. Hall. I’ll be leaving now.”

Without waiting for Jake’s reply, she pushed open the door and stepped outside. Alfie followed closely behind, carrying her bag.

Just as they reached the elevator, she heard steady footsteps behind her and turned to see Jake emerging from the

conference room.

As the elevator doors opened, Gwen and Jake stepped inside together.

Jake’s indifferent voice broke the silence. “When did you become so domineering?”

“I’ve always been this way.”

“Did Henry teach you?” Jake’s tone grew darker, revealing a jealousy he didn’t fully understand.

Gwen didn’t bother to look at him. “What does that matter to you?”

Feeling increasingly irritated, Jake stepped closer to her. “Can’t we talk calmly?”

“No.” Gwen arched an eyebrow. Her voice was laced with frost as she said, “You used to speak to me this way, Mr. Hall. Why are you the one getting angry now?”

Jake paused at her words. As memories flooded back, he tried to recall a moment when he had spoken patiently to Gwen, but no such instances surfaced. He found himself at a loss for words.

“Yes, we’re working together now, but we shouldn’t have private interactions unless necessary. Things like taking the elevator together shouldn’t happen again.”

When they reached the first floor, Gwen strutted out of the elevator, leaving Jake behind to ponder his thoughts.

That evening, Gwen, Yara, and Judy gathered at Halo Bar for a small get–together.

After a lively round of dancing, they were all feeling fatigued. Judy handed her phone to Gwen with a serious expression. “Any idea what’s this about?”

Confused, Gwen took the phone. A smile crept onto her lips as she read the words on the screen.

Yara leaned in to see as well. “Which stupid reporter is spreading lies about my babe again? Destroy them, Judy!” Her voice rose in outrage.

Charter Cat We Talk, Cally

The article title was eye–catching and straightforward-“Female Executive Secretly Meets with

Subordinate”.

Beneath it were several photos from the night Gwen accompanied Carson to the hotel after he got beaten up. The comments flooded in..

‘Seriously? She left a wealthy family for this?”

“I don’t believe it. I’d rather believe she’s having an affair with her boss than a subordinate!”

“Looks like the divorce hurt her. Now, she’s drowning in money and

power.”

Judy plopped back onto the couch. As she swirled her drink, the ice cubes clinked against the glass. Her expression was cold and serious. “I’ve got someone to investigate it. We’ll have answers by tonight.”

Gwen, already accustomed to such scenarios, calmly set the phone down. “Nothing fresh here. Same old tired comments. The creativity of netizens has really declined lately.”

Judy shook her head in exasperation. “Only you could think that way.

Meanwhile, Yara wrapped an arm around Gwen. “Come on, let’s go sing.”

As they stepped out onto the stage, they encountered Bradley, who was embracing two tall, scantily clad women, with Jake standing nearby.

“I finally got my revenge, Jake,” Bradley said with a grin while tightening his hold on the women.

Jake froze for a moment and looked at him. “What do you mean? What did you do?”

“I found a video of that woman sleeping with her subordinate at the hotel. I took screenshots and posted them online with a flashy title. That promiscuous woman deserves to be scolded!”
