The evening air was cool. The aroma of the food set on the table traveled down everyone’s nose through the same air. There was also an air of suspicion that danced over the heads of Mazza, Alonso, and Mariyanna. Taleela was just an innocent victim. The only one who still reserved doubts for her was Alonso.

Taleela?! It was about time someone explained what was going on to Mariyanna. She knew that Alonso was watching her intently, so she did her best not to lose her composure again. Alyona, on the other hand, was genuinely looking at her like she was a total stranger.

No matter how many times she looked towards her, she did not flinch. Mariyanna tongue almost rolled out the name Alyona, but she bit down on her lips and reminded herself to play along.

“Did you say you’re his fiancee?” Mariyanna asked, trying to keep up with a straight face, for Christ’s sake, her sister to whom she pushes to the sea to die us right in front of her, acting or lovey-dovey towards her.

“Yes, I am,” Taleela said hastily before Alonso could interject to the question.

“That’s nice, so how long have you two known?” Mariyanna said as an open question to both of them.

“It’s only been a couple of weeks,” Taleela said proudly.

“Hmm, sounds good to me,” said Mariyanna, pouring herself half a glass of wine and setting the bottle back down on the table. “My last relationship was a bit of a letdown despite how it took us a fairly long time to start dating. So how long it takes to know someone before dating them doesn’t guarantee shit and all.”

“Yeah, I think so too!” Taleela replied.

“Hmm, how did you know Mr. Alonso?” Mariyanna said, doing her best to make the question sound casual.

“Well, it happened by pure chance!” Taleela said. She recounted the details in summary form when Mazza saw her until now.

“Wow, that’s such a beautiful story,” Mariyanna said, finally knowing why Taleela did not recall her. “I hope you’ll remember who you were someday.”

“Yeah, except, for now, I’m quite alright with the fact that nothing has interfered with my present life.”

“Ah, I see,” Mariyanna said. She forked a piece of meat, and she brought it to her mouth to consume it.

Alonso was silent because he sensed the feeling of fear in Mariyanna despite the confident charade she was trying to display. Taleela remained mysteriously calm, and it bothered him. He did not know what was happening, but his senses told him something was not right.

The earlier look of astonishment, how Mariyanna’s face registered recognition when she saw Taleela, made him wonder why she was pretending. Mazza spoke with him through their werewolves’ telepathic powers, which startled him because he hardly did that anymore.

‘Something is amiss, grandson,’ Mazza linked. ‘Mariyanna seems like she is hiding something, but Taleela looks dumb about whatever it is.’

‘Yeah, I’ve noticed that,’ Alonso replied via the link.

‘I can’t keep up with it anymore, and I have to go now. Find something to tell them.”

“Alonso and Mazza, you’re both quiet, and it’s not helping,” Taleela said to them, making a duh face.

“Sorry, I don’t feel so good right now,” Mazza said, excusing himself. Taleela watched him leave disbelievingly. He had not even touched his food.

“It’s okay. He gets uncomfortable being around people he’s not used to,” Alonso said, finally able to come up with an excuse in the nick of time. “It was my fault for bringing him out here in the first place.”

“Aww, and he must be feeling famished! I should take his food to him then,” Taleela said, suddenly overcome with the intense desire to leave too. She took the tray of food. “Mariyanna, enjoy your dinner. I’m sorry we are both leaving like this, but it feels like the both of you could use the privacy and talk about your business. It was nice to meet you.”

“It’s a pleasure,” said Mariyanna.

“Bye, honey,” Taleela said to Alonso, who offered a simple nod.

When Taleela left, Mariyanna said to Alonso, “It seems they don’t like me much.”

“No, that’s not it,” said Alonso digging into his plate. “It’s the whole idea of this being a business dinner that ruined it. So then shall we talk about business?”

“Very well, I’m listening.”

“Can you run some arms into Egypt for me from Russia? I’m targeting Egypt because their porous borders and long coastlines would enable us to smuggle small arms between both countries easily.”

“That’s quite an achievable feat because Arilogistics already has a landing strip for both importation and exportation in both places.”

“How do you deal with the security officials and the government?”

“Come on, and we’re talking about corrupt officials that can either be bribed or blackmailed. This allows my company to circumvent the regulatory and oversight systems put in place by the government.”

“Oh, I see,” Alonso said, nodding slowly. “Have you done anything of this sort before?”

She gave him a quizzical look. “I have, and on a more professional level! Africa as a whole is far beneath my league. I’ve exported hard drugs, arms, and even banned goods within Europe and America for a while.”

“Alright, I’ll give you the deal but then if you fail once we are done.”

She smiled. “Very well, I understand. I’ve never failed in the past. Why would I die now?”

Alonso left the rhetorical question unanswered as it should be. They ate in silence, and Mariyanna kept staring at him. Mariyanna was thinking about how frustrating fate could be.

She had taken power and felt like she had gotten rid of Alyona for good. She found someone she was willing to give a chance to, and boom, fate decided to bring her sister back from the dead.

“You look lost in thought,” Alonso chipped in. He drank his wine, gazing at her.

“Sorry, it’s been a long day for me. There are still things that need my attention, and I was thinking about how I’ll handle them.”

Alonso, while growing up, had faced all sorts of ill-treatment from those that he wanted to call friends. His story was one of rejection, powerlessness, and timidity in the face of his peers.

He had faced trepidation that ranged from simple to complex. As a young boy, he always feared they were out to get him. Not just those he did nothing to offend but virtually everyone who breathed and walked the earth.

Alonso would lose sleep at night, and it was not until recently that he became a force not to be reckoned with that he knew what a peaceful night’s rest tasted like. However, replaceing ways to rest more at night did not mean he was completely safe. There were those seeking vengeance of the highest level against him, but power was a game of who was more robust.

While his story became intriguing of how he rose to become this powerful, he undoubtedly made stringent enemies along the way to do so. Lucian, one of those enemies, had been framed for faking his kidnapping and attempting to kill his daughter just for the sake of his company.

He was livid about everything Alonso was causing him. He decided he would have to eliminate the man because a sin committed by one’s own hands was better when accused than when the person was not guilty. He was in his office discussing with the sniper he had hired. It did not take him much replaceing to get one.

“I want Alonso dead for all the things he has done to me,” Lucian said.

“I don’t get paid to need a reason to put a man down,” said the hitman.

“Good, very good. I want it all done by tomorrow, okay. I’ve already paid you half, and when it’s done, I’ll send the other half.”

“Well, I’ll ask you if you don’t think that you’re throwing caution to the wind?”

“What do you mean?”

“The air of suspicion still looms around you, and if anything should happen to Mr. Alonso, then you’ll undoubtedly be made to face a lot of investigation.”

“In the court, unless one is proven guilty, every accusation is just noise. I don’t care about what the media has to say. If need be, I can afford a good lawyer to defend me.”

“Very well then, so where should the shooting be carried out?”

“Alonso’s company! La corporation De Sina. Other taller structures surround it.”

“Alright, that’s a good location.”

Eureka froze at the door to her father’s office. The things that she had heard her father say to whoever was behind closed doors in there with him were unacceptable. She heard light footsteps, and she quickly dashed into the opposite office, which was supposed to be hers.

She did not let the door click shut as it would draw suspicion of the man leaving. Since her father’s return, she was not sure what to believe anymore. The media said that he was the one who set up Alonso and had her shot twice.

Now, upon hearing what she had just heard, she sealed the doors of giving him the benefit of doubts shut. He had once told her that he would make Alonso crumble because he felt too high and mighty. She had to warn Alonso right away.

Her father came out of the office a minute later after the other man had left. When he was gone, she quickly brought out her phone to call Alonso, but he was not answering her. She would have gone to him, but it was late at night.

She should not have been at the office at that hour, to begin with, but her father was not home, and she got tipped that he was in the office. She had wanted to sort things out with him once and for all, but now she was sickened to the stomach. To her, her father depicted horribleness to the core.

“I’ll just have to wait until it’s morning to go there,” she thought.

That night Eureka was tossing and turning in bed restless. She had tried his number multiple times, but he switched it off. She felt he was with Taleela in bed, which was disgusting to think about, especially now that she was trying to save his life. She cried for a while and did not know when she fell asleep due to the heavy exhaustion she had been battling with.

The alarm blaring made her jump to her feet from the bed. She checked to see if she was still in her skin. She glanced at the time with the thought that the impossible had just happened. It was seven a:m in the morning, and she dashed off in her nightwear to her car.

Speedily she drove to De Sina mansion, where she was informed that Alonso had already left for work. She pushed the vehicle with insanity.

When she arrived at the office, she could see Alonso about to step out of the car as his bodyguard opened up the door for him. She did not know the exact location of the sniper man, and she was still a few distances away from him. She abandoned the car and went after him on foot.

Meanwhile, the Hitman man had not anticipated the arrival of a new human shield. He was fixated on Alonso, who his bodyguard was shielding.

“Alonso…” Eureka yelled in horror, running crazily to her Alonso.

Alonso turned to stare at her in confusion. Eureka was on her nightwear, with an indoor flip-flop to her fit. The Eureka he knows doesn’t leave the house without wearing the latest designers, but here she is, running right in front of him, looking like the nightmare version of her. Alonso thought.

The moment the man stepped aside, and Alonso was left in a clear line of sight watching Eureka running towards him, he took his aim, but she appeared right in front of Alonso, and the bullet hit her on the head.

“Shit!”

The bodyguards were immediately alerted by the shot, and they began firing in his direction. They were also running towards him. He had to take down the ones he could because he doubted he could outrun six whole bodyguards.

After gunning down two of the guys, he abandoned the sniper gun in an attempt to flee.

Alonso held his head with both hands as he crouched down over the dead body of Eureka. He did not cry, but he was in pain. She must have tried to warn him. He recalled not taking her calls and not opening the text messages because he was with Mazza. He got drunk at the bar and, at a point, had to turn off his phone.

He checked her messages and saw how she made passive remarks about him ignoring her when she warned him about his life being in danger.

She was bitching about him and Taleela probably having s*x which was what she believed was the reason he did not answer her. He swore to avenge her death, and he closed her eyes that were staring blankly at him.

“Eureka…” He screams in agony, holding her lifeless body to his body.
