The Alpha Mafia King -
Chapter 28
Alonso cursed “shit!” more times than he had in his entire lifetime. Why had Eureka abandoned care to jump in front of a bullet for him? Part of him hated that he had to feel partly guilty or responsible for her stupidity! Who asked her to take a bullet for him? All around him, people were starting to gather around. They had heard the exchange of gunshots, and now they were all murmuring at the scene.
The police had been alerted, and they were arriving now. The wailing of the sirens came to a shrill before ending abruptly. An ambulance followed the police car as well. Alonso straightened and prepared himself mentally. The chief of police was already coming his way.
“Good day, Mr. Alonso. What happened?” Anderson Cooper said.
“Good day, officer,” said Alonso. He pointed towards the top of a building. “I believe that someone had tried to assassinate me from the top of that roof, but then she stepped into the line of fire.”
“Stepped into the line of fire, how?” the chief said, stunned gazed.
Alonso searched for how to twist the truth and said, “I don’t know how but she knew something was about to happen, and she was coming to warn me, I think. She was running towards me, and she shouted my name as someone would do in panic…”
The chief stared at the building for a while.
“And then what?”
“That was when she caught the bullet chief. My bodyguards chased after the sniper! As you can see, it’s not only Miss Eureka that’s dead. These men were part of my guards and were gunned down from the same position as Miss Eureka.”
“Hmm, what makes you think the shot was intended for you?” said the chief.
“Chief, there were more attempts on my life after the shooter killed the wrong person. That was when my bodyguards started to exchange fire with the shooter, and I lost two of my men. The rest went in pursuit of the sniper man.”
The chief felt weakened. “Do you have any idea who would want to kill you?”
“No, I don’t,” said Alonso shrugging. He told a lie deliberately because he wanted to be the one to make Lucian Oriano pay for his sins. The police were far too merciful. Bianco, who had been amongst those who chased down the attacker, was returning.
“Boss, we lost him!” Bianco said.
‘He has been taken care of!’ said Bianco discreetly via their shared werewolves telepathic powers.
“Did you get a look at the killer?” the chief said.
Alonso watched them cover Eureka up and carry her on a stretcher. His heart ached so much, still unable to believe that she was gone for life. Bianco felt himself reliving a similar moment when his mate was killed right before him. The agony revisited him, and honestly, he wanted to leave here by all means before he transformed into a beast.
“I think I did,” replied Bianco.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know if I didn’t see his face properly,” Bianca said.
“Can you give us a brief description of what you think you saw?”
“I really can’t,” Bianco said. “He is tall, well built, and very fast, that’s what I remember. I’m sorry that I can’t help with identifying him.”
“Alright, alright, then we will look into this privately.”
“Yeah, please do,” said Alonso.”Chief Anderson, the killer, has to be brought to justice.”
Lucian Oriano could not believe how everything had gone wrong. He was in complete pain when the police contacted him that his daughter was in the morgue. He wept bitterly. It was because of his callousness that the only daughter he had was dead. Honestly, he felt like the Earth should open up and swallow him.
There was nothing more to live for, he thought. However, he had to go and claim her body and bury her properly. He shivered just from the mere thought of it.
Lucian went to the morgue to see her. She looked deader than a dead dog’s bone buried down a blind alley off a dead-end street in a ghost town. He rocked her body and sobbed like he had done the day he lost his wife.
“How did the mistake happen?” he wondered.
The sniper’s number was unreachable, which was not surprising to him. All he wanted to do now was bury his daughter and flee. He felt like running because he heard the media reporting that the attack had been targeted at Alonso right after the police had contacted him.
Alonso would be after him, no doubt. He did not know how but he knew it was inevitable. He had barely even been able to clear the air of suspicion that danced over his head about faking his kidnapping and being the one who hired a hand to shoot at his daughter.
Lucian decided to go for an immediate cremation of Eureka’s body and opt not to host any memorial events after the fact. After the cremation, a particular processor ground the fragments of bones into what is called “cremains.” The remains were placed in a golden urn provided by Lucian and were handed back to him. He went home and opened the safe that contained his wife’s urn, and placed Eureka’s own next to hers.
Was it time to flee? Yes! However, he just went and sat on his couch in the living room, crying uncontrollably.
“Come on, Alonso, what’s keeping you?” he said to himself. “I’ll wait here until you show up. I won’t run because I have nothing else to live for.”
Lucian bowed his head and prayed for mercy. He said his last prayers in his heart and, another time, whispered. The unusually long prayer ended when he heard someone breaking into his house.
Then Alonso and Bianco went into the living room. Lucian was calm and stared at them, nodding. He knelt and bowed his head.
“You were expecting us?” Alonso asked wearily.
“Get it over with quickly but please cremate my body and add it to those of my family,” Lucian said, tears dropping from his already swollen face.
Alonso took careful strides to the safe, which was unlocked. He peered and saw two golden urns. Bianco held a gun to Lucian’s forehead.
“Death is mercy if you expect it,” said Alonso, returning to them. He lowered Bianco’s hand. “Either you do it yourself or answer for your crime.”
“No! Come back and end me,” Lucian begged and watched Alonso and Bianco leave.
Were they going to ignore him? He yelled in agony! Then finally, he stopped screaming. He saw the gun that Bianco left him on the stool. Tempted, he went and grabbed it. He went after them and pointed the weapon at Alonso, who instinctively turned to face him.
“Go ahead,” said Alonso fearlessly.
Lucian’s trigger finger was so tempted to squeeze, but then he put the gun to his head. He could not kill a person, nor could he kill himself. The fact remained that he did not dare to end a life, and yet he had finished his own daughter’s life technically.
“Alonso come back here and end my life!” he barked.
“You’ve two weeks to do what you feel is right,” said Alonso
When Don Alonso and Bianco stepped outside the compound, Bianco turned to his boss and said, “What if he does nothing?”
“Well then, I will do something on his behalf!” said Alonso, as he casually continued walking.
“Something?” Bianco muttered. “Should it not have been just better to have killed him right now?”
“What?! No. I can’t kill him and satisfy his cravings.”
“It beats me the way you sometimes act, boss,” Bianco said.
Bianco meant that Alonso was always taking an unpredictable course of action. He made incomprehensible decisions within seconds. Trying to figure him out was like throwing a rock into the river and expecting it to float.
Alonso returned home that night and found himself wrapped in Taleela’s warm embrace. She was hugging him by the staircase. Earlier, after he had left Lucian’s house, he decided to be away from everyone to mourn Eureka’s death personally.
He did not love her, but she was close enough to him. He recalled more than just the s*x. She stood by him constantly, and he had to give her credit for being loyal until the end, even though all he did for her was causing her pain. In Taleela’s embrace, she felt at peace. He also knew that he would treat her differently.
“Hey, sorry about what happened to Eureka,” Taleela said, pulling away from the embrace. “We heard what happened.”
“Yeah, thanks… I need to refresh myself!” he replied, going up the stairs.
“Hey, if you don’t mind, can we talk later?”
“Yeah, sure, meet me in my room.”
Taleela watched him climb up the stairs in disbelief. She wondered if she had heard right? He wanted her to come to his room. She pumped her fist in the air excitingly.
“Someone looks the happiest I have seen them,” Lady Tanya said, shutting the door behind her.
“Lady Tanya! You’re back!” Taleela said, going to hug her.
“Yeah, I came back alright,” she replied with a smile. “So, what’s making you feel like a clown?”
“Well, Alonso said that I can come over to this bedroom tonight since I said I want to talk with him.”
Tanya danced excitedly as if the news had hit her with the best feeling ever. She was on Mazza’s side when it boiled down to shipping Alonso and Taleela. Taleela joined her in the dance, and they laughed like little children.
“Finally! Hey, but you better utilize the opportunity very well,” Tanya said, finally able to keep calm. “Don’t be boring okay… jeez, he hates boring conversations, and he gets bored easily too. Also, try not to ask him about his past life for now.”
“Hmm, someone sure knows a lot of things,” Taleela said, looking at Tanya, surprised. “Thank you for the little hint.”
“No, it is nothing at all!” said Lady Tanya. “I am just helping out a friend. Well, now that he is starting to reciprocate the feelings, have you thought of a way to deal with Eureka?”
Taleela’s face contorted with a sad look. “I guess you haven’t heard of it.”
Tanya’s face registered a blank stare. “Have you heard of what? I am lost; help me replace my bearings.”
“Eureka’s dead,” Taleela said, with a twinge of unhappiness registering in her tone.
“What!” Tanya asked, staggering a few steps backward and holding her forehead. “How did it happen?”
“I heard someone tried to kill Alonso, and then she got caught by the bullet,” Taleela said. “I don’t know how that’s why I need to speak with Alonso… and see what’s going on.”
Tanya took a calm breath and said, “Alright, you do that, okay! And let me know if he needs anything.”
“Yes, sure!” Taleela responded, heading up the stairs.
“Where is Mazza?”
Taleela paused in her tracks. “He’s not back yet?”
Manta shrugged and said, “Are you asking or telling?”
“A bit of both. I knew he said he was going out, but he didn’t tell me where. Also, he said he’d be back in two hours… I had been asleep for the past few hours, so I thought he’d be back and probably be in the pool.”
“Well, I am coming from the poolside, and he is not there. I am sure he will be on his way. It is normal for him to disappear once in a while.”
Taleela smiled softly and nodded. “Alright then, see you later.”
Tanya made her way to the kitchen, and Taleela went to Alonso’s room. She stopped at the door and took a deep breath. Just as she knocked, the door swung open, and her knuckles hit his bare chest.
Taleela felt the AI had informed him that she was coming. She cursed the computer silently. However, Alonso knew she was coming because he sensed her abilities.
