Mariyanna passionately said, “I have reason to believe that Agent Fox could be having an affair with Olga; come on, we both know men are ambitious. She could have used several things to rope him in.

Maybe Olga might’ve even promised him a higher status in the family. Perhaps they are planning a coup to have us taken out.”

“Plausible,” said Alonzo. “About the other assassination attempt, I think it’s the same guy that tried to poison Alyona at the casino when she arrived in Russia. He has been tracking her from Italy.”

“That further strengthens my theory then,” Mariyanna said.

“Hmm, but it still doesn’t explain why you’ll pretend about not knowing who your sister was.”

“Very well then, I hope this dispels the thought of me having ulterior motives; I chose to act ignorant about my sister because I thought it would be better if she didn’t know that her dad and lover were both murdered at your hands.”

“That’s enough, please,” said Alonzo.

“Alright, I’ll speak with you in person shortly; as I said, I’m on my way to take care of the situation.”

“Set up a time and a place for the meeting when you land,” Alonso said, ending the call.

Mariyanna’s explanation of things was better than Alonso hoped to get. The reason for her pretending not to know her sister was so inconvenient that he couldn’t blame Mariyanna for not telling Alyona sooner.

On the other hand, he was relieved that Mariyanna was coming here to Russia to take care of things. At least she had answers.

Mariyanna smiled devilishly at the phone when the conversation was over. Everything was going according to plan. Olga would take the fall for her, and Agent Fox was in on the project.

All she needed for Olga to go down were the witnesses who saw Agent Fox, and she went into a room to discuss. If Fox played his card well, he could even get her in the most awkward position that would make any denial from her irrelevant.

“Boss,” Bianco said, holding out a phone for him. “Jerald said he’s got a word for you.”

Alonzo took the phone and said, “Yeah, what’s the word, Jerald?”

“I’ve identified the assassin, and I think I might know who he’s working for,” Jerald said with hesitation.

“Go on,” Alonso said impatiently. His body jerked as the car went in and out of a porthole.

“His name is agent Fox, and he works for the Makarov family.”

“That’s stale news,” Alonzo said. “Do we know where he is now?”

“I’m afraid he’s gone, boss.”

“What do you mean he’s gone? Find him! Use every man and resource we’ve to track the son of a bitch down. And Jerald, we already took him alive once; if you see him again, clip the motherfucker.”

“Yes, sir.”

Alonzo handed the phone back to Bianco, and he said, “You heard her; what do you think, Bianco?”

“I don’t know what to believe; this is a deeply rooted conspiracy, and from working with you, I have my reservations about things like this. It could have been planned.”

“You are right; we should keep a closer watch on Mariyanna’s activities henceforth. She might have orchestrated this conspiracy to clear her name.”

“I’ll see that it’s taken care of, boss,” Bianco said.

“Thank you, Bianco,” Alonzo said. They were still miles away from the meeting place with the King, and he shut his eyes to think about things within the period left for the journey.

Moments before Agent Fox’s great escape, he had strolled down the ornate hallway of the Makarov mansion with Olga. Mariyanna had informed him to get out of the place before Nestor had his men barricade all exits.

However, he had to make sure that he and Olga were seen in compromising ways. That was why he had risked a few more minutes to have them seen laughing and talking casually, and at some point, he held her hands, pinned her to the wall, and kissed her.

The agent knew that someone was watching him, and that person would report the things he had seen to Nestor when he arrived.

Nestor, in his office, looked at images unbelievably. It made him boil that Agent Fox had gotten away before he could seal all exits. Mariyanna had reached out to him earlier, telling him she heard the news that Alyona was back home and she was shot.

He wasn’t so surprised that someone had divulged the information to her. Nestor then accused Mariyanna of having a hand in ordering her sister’s assassination.

Mariyanna denied it, and when he tried to bring up agent Fox, she laughed. She told him she didn’t even know the agent was back. She seemed livid when she heard that Fox hadn’t been apprehended.

Nestor argued that it wasn’t his fault and that he would send words to have him arrested at once. Finally, Nestor told her he knew she was aware that Alyona had been alive for quite some time, and she fed him the same pathetic story about not wanting to hurt her feelings.

Nestor had been observing Olga since he came back, and she seemed to be fidgeting around him. However, he didn’t use this to conclude that Mariyanna’s theory was correct. He had discreetly interviewed some men, including Laslow, who were around when Agent Fox was.

They all said the same thing. They had seen the man and Olga go into a room to discuss. Agent Fox and Olga, from his observation, seemed to be in on something together. He wasn’t stupid, but Mariyanna had done well to drive everyone further away from the truth. He had every exit blocked, and currently, he was holding Olga Sidorova, his boss, prisoner.

“What the hell is going on?” Olga said, storming into the office, trying to play the boss card. Nestor rose immediately and allowed his bulk frame to show Olga that he wasn’t intimidated by her.

“How about you confess to your crimes?” Nestor said.

Olga was surprised as she saw the pictures left out in the open for her to see. She immediately realized she had been compromised and set up.

“I was only following orders,” Olga said softly. “Nestor, if you think I betrayed the Makarov family on my own, then you are mistaken.”

“Well, you should have come to me earlier about it; the problem is that you are guilty irrespective of the parties involved. You tried to have Alyona shot, and even if I were to believe you were following orders, it still would not change the fact that you have committed a crime nonetheless.”

“I have proof that Mariyanna is in on this,” Olga said, and Nestor took a shaky breath.

“You had better get that proof before she gets here; otherwise, it will be your word against hers.”

Olga couldn’t imagine that Mariyanna was capable of framing her. They were supposed to be best friends.

At this point, she had only one thought, and it was that Mariyanna was indeed the worst person alive. She stormed into Don’s secret room, searching for the tablet, but after a while of fruitless search, she accepted that it was gone.

Agent Fox must’ve had it on him before escaping. He wasn’t just running; he abandoned her because he knew what they had done, himself and Mariyanna.

Nestor, she knew, did not doubt that Mariyanna was framing her, but he was right; without proof, nothing else mattered. She got played.

“The bastard took away the proof,” Olga said. She had just returned empty-handed to Nestor, who still sat behind his desk. “I am telling you the truth, Nestor.”

“Sit,” Nestor said. “How long have you known about Alyona?”

“I knew about her being alive the same day I gave out the assassination order,” Olga explained. “Mariyanna said she was frantic because Alyona had returned. She said I should have someone ready to take her out if she came here.”

“And you did just that,” Nestor said. “Then why couldn’t you think it was fishy that she sent someone your way.”

“The agent was supposed to kill you,” Olga said. “I have nothing to hide. Mariyanna said that you were disloyal, and she would have you taken out before you caused any more hitch in her plan to remain the Don. Nestor, you know you are the only one who can enforce Ivan’s will to make Alyona Don.”

“Olga, as much as I would like to believe you, I’m afraid the allegations levied on you are so much that it would be deemed aiding and abetting a criminal If I let you go.”

“So you’ll let this bullshit story of hers fly?”

“I think you mean to ask if I have a conscience, and the answer is that I don’t. You will answer for your crimes, and if you’re telling the truth about Mariyanna’s involvement, then I can assure you that in due time she will pay too.”

Olga smiled sadly and said, “I can’t stand the humiliation, but if I’m going down, my sacrifice shouldn’t have to be in vain. There’s no victory without sacrifices!”

Nestor’s heart thumped faster at realizing that Olga was holding a grenade. Before he could react, she detonated it, and they both exploded and stomped on the floor; Nestor was covered in b***d, while Olga was already dead

Nestor struggles as he tries to call for help, but the inflamed injuries are too much. He slowly turns around with his eyes open, and instantly he kicks the bucket.

“Shame,” Mariyanna said to Laslow. “I guess I’ll be needing a new underboss and consigliere.”

Mariyanna announced to everyone what had happened. She informed them that she would talk to Alyona about replacing Olga as the underboss. It was such a unifying moment, and everyone thought Mariyanna was being, in fact, fair.

After addressing the family, she headed out to meet with Callisto, and if that didn’t take too long, she might still be able to pull off the meeting with Alonzo.
