Alonzo returned to Piccolo, his face slightly revealing that all was not well. Piccolo stood up to receive him.

“Hey man, what’s the problem?” Piccolo said with his eyes searching Alonzo’s own for a clue.

“I told you she wouldn’t take it well,” he answered back.

“That’s utterly unfair. Utterly unfair coming from someone who recently poisoned your horse and tried to get you killed. You forgave her in a heartbeat; why can’t she do the same? I feel I should talk some sense into her.”

“Huh, what? No! Let her be for now. She has every right to get mad at me because I- I let her get kidnapped, defiled, bleeding to death, and above all, she’s just lost her pregnancy. What I did to her is worse than what she did to me.”

“I see your point,” Piccolo cooled down with a resigned sigh. “What now?”

“Well, the doctor said I shouldn’t bother about the hospital bills. Alyona will be discharged this evening, and she will return home. Let’s head back to the crib and plan for tomorrow’s event.”

Tomorrow’s event! The abdication of the werewolf kingdom. It was going to be a big day in the werewolves community. So big a day it was that Alonzo had to shift the burial of his grandfather to the day after tomorrow. Alonzo was still unable to think of how to hold a befitting burial for his grandfather.

“Yeah, okay, good point. So, uh, if it’s worth anything, I think she’s not done yet. Give her some time, and she’ll eventually come around.”

“I hope so, too,” Alonzo said. “Let’s go, then.”

“Yeah, let’s bounce.”

“How did it go with the investigation?”

“Right, I almost forgot.” Piccolo hastened to match Alonzo’s pace. He wished his buddy would slow down! “Well, sadly, the detective won’t cut corners,” he added.

“It’s that bad, huh? How about our associates?”

“They are weak-kneed on the matter because they can’t silence the media. Due to the number of casualties, everyone wants to know what and who is responsible for the bombing.”

Alonzo g*****d. “I hate the media.”

They both exited the hospital building, heading to the parking lot.

“Likewise,” Piccolo said. “I had an idea. What if somebody was to take credit for the bombing?”

Alonzo scratched the back of his head, pausing in front of the car’s door. “Sadly, that would pose more suspicion for the detective even if the public accepts that story. The detective is convinced that we are running a mafia operation.”

“Indeed, what if his superiors were to replace something incriminating on him.”

“Like taking bribes,” Alonzo said, entering into the car.

“Exactly. And then he could lose his job.”

“Or get transferred to a different location. We can do both. Someone confesses for the bombing, and then the detective gets thrown off the case because he is a dirty cop.”

“Finito! Problem solved.” Piccolo adjusted his collar.

“Half solved.” Alonzo scowled. “Now that everything feels over, I’m starting to realize just how much the damages cost me on both businesses. We need to be more ruthless in making more money.”

“Count me in,” Piccolo said. “The Mafia needs rebranding.”

“It does, and we need to take on new jobs and expand our territories. I wish Alyona and I weren’t facing a mess right now. An alliance with the Makarov would greatly boost our economy.”

“Speaking of which,” Piccolo said suddenly. “Have you heard from Mariyanna?”

“Nope, but I wonder about her, myself. Could she have learned that Alyona knows the truth about what she did? Where was she when all these were happening?”

“Better yet, I hope she isn’t scheming anything bad.”

“Well, what could she do?”

Piccolo was silent. Following up on all he had heard about Mariyanna, he had concluded that she might be a dangerous person, especially now that Alyona had uncovered her lies. The sisters would definitely go to war, or maybe not…

“Let’s just keep close watch over Alyona.”

“You think I need to be told?” Alonzo scoffed. “Bianco’s going to guard her closely until she is back with me.”

The rain that Alonzo had so desired started to shower mildly. He rolled down the car’s window and turned his face in that direction, allowing splotches of rainfall to whip his face along with the gentle breeze. Mazza loved water. Rain, swimming pools, seas, oceans… name them… he loved it all. Alonzo concluded that he was going to have his grandfather cremated and scatter his ashes onto the ocean of the beach, wherein he had found Alyona, his mate. Just as he concluded this in his mind, his phone rang on vibration.

“Who’s on the line?” Alonzo said, getting riled up because he didn’t like unknown numbers calling him.

“My name is Alandro, and I would never have called this line if Lady Tanya hadn’t informed me regrettably of your grandfather’s demise. I’m sorry for your loss.”

Alonzo’s countenance expressed confusion. “Lady Tanya? Who are you?”

“Well, I’m your grandfather’s lawyer from back in his days, and I have been keeping his will for many years now. Your father’s inheritance was willed to you after he passed on. I never imagined Mazza would die before me. I thought my son would be the one to give you the will because, you see, I’m terminally ill.”

Alonzo felt heartbroken. The inheritance which was supposed to be passed down from Mazza to his father had been given to him because his father died, and now Mazza was dead too.

“Sorry about the sickness. What is it?”

“Brain tumor,” Alandro said without any trace of regret in his voice. “Are you in Italy? I would love for us to meet as soon as possible.”

“I’m not yet in Italy, but next tomorrow I will be holding a funeral for my granddad. You are invited to join.”

“Alright, thank you, send me the details of the venue. Once again, I’m really sorry for your loss. Your granddad was indeed the greatest of men.”

“Thank you. You should also take heart. If my grandfather entrusted you with his will and never told me about it, you must have meant so much to him.”

Alandro laughed. “Wait till you read the will. I have gone through it a few times myself, and I’m speechless.”

Alonzo was tempted to ask the man to say it, but he controlled himself. He could wait. “Well, I guess you won’t tell me now until we see.”

“Ah yes, good guess.”

The line clicked off, and Alonzo let out a long weary sigh. “My grandfather left me some inheritance.”

Piccolo had been listening, and he was shocked as well. “Well, what could he have possibly left you? And Lady Tanya was aware of this?”

“It seems so,” Alonzo said, chuckling.

“Those two can take a secret to the grave.”

“Yeah, I wonder how many secrets my granddad took to his. Words spread so fast about his death. I’ve been getting a lot of calls from powerful men.”

“You are acting surprised,” Piccolo said, feeling amused.

“In a way, yes, it’s surprising how everyone shows up after you’re dead.”

“It’s typical of most people. They don’t really love you until you are dead.”

“What does that say of us?”

Piccolo sighed. “I express my love towards you daily, so don’t even go there. In fact, you’re the one who’s always acting like you’re incapable of showing feelings. I wouldn’t have figured you’d be this showy with your feelings if not for Alyona.”

Alonzo laughed. “She’s changed me a lot. Got me wishing I cared more.”

***

Alyona felt devastated where she lay and cried silently for hours. How had she gotten involved in this mess? Her life had been a nice roller coaster until she met the Marcovics. While they cared for her during her accident and memory loss, they had, in fact, been responsible for the biggest tragedies of her life.

She swore to close the chapter of the Marcovic’s for good. Even though Mazza was dead, she felt betrayed by him. He should have told her the truth about who they were. Imagine her surprise learning that werewolves existed. How was it even possible? She wondered. She would have never believed it had she not seen it with her eyes.

All that aside, she didn’t care now. She was just done with everything. Her unborn child was gone, and nothing was keeping her bound to the Marcovic’s family— if only Alonzo had told her they were mates! She knew nothing about the bond that existed between them.

She wondered where her sister had been in all of this.

“Well, to hell with her! I will become the Don as it was rightfully my position. Anyone who stands in my way will be executed.”

The doctor knocked and entered the room. They chatted about her health briefly, and he told her she was free to leave anytime or she could stay until morning.

Who the hell would agree to stay in a hospital? Alyona wondered as she prepared herself to leave the place.
