The war had ended in the blink of an eye. Decades of hatred were silenced in an instant. However, the war had brought with its end inevitably some casualties, even for those who had emerged victoriously.

Mazza’s body had been transported to the morgue earlier. Alonzo was still feeling conflicted about what to do with Mazza’s body. Would his grandfather have preferred to be cremated and have his ashes scattered into the sea? Or would he have chosen to be laid to rest in Switzerland next to his son?

While Alonzo deliberated on what to do, he informed a few people about his grandfather’s demise. Lady Tanya was the last person he called to tell. He began crying again when Lady Tanya sobbed uncontrollably over the phone.

Alonzo remembered how Lady Tanya started as just an ordinary maid, but over time she and Mazza gravitated into each other, slowly turning into friends and, at last, lovers. Mazza had such a likable personality. It was why his death would shake the werewolf community, and the Mafia world would miss him greatly. He always had a way of carrying everyone along. As for Alonzo, one thing he’d miss is the nuggets of wisdom his granddad fed him.

Across the sky, patches of dark clouds had started to form. The sun was out one minute and lost the next. Alonzo wished the rain would fall heavily. Also, he wanted the world to go completely dark for some obscure reason.

Meanwhile, Alyona had been admitted to the hospital. The doctor had said she might need a b***d transfusion. Alonzo would have been comfortable giving her his life if they needed it at this point. Notwithstanding, Alonzo couldn’t give Alyona his b***d because of how it would affect her being that he wasn’t just a human. Well, gratefully, the hospital wasn’t short on supply of b***d.

Alonzo and Piccolo were on their way to the hospital to see Alyona. It had been the most silent ride they had ever embarked on together.

“Why are we so quiet?” Piccolo inquired breathlessly. He rested his hand on the window of the car.

“Because we are grieving,” Alonzo answered, not turning to look at him.

“Yeah, but when I lost my mother, you made it so easy for me to process my feelings,” Piccolo said. “I wish I could do something to lighten your mood.”

“Hmm, what more can you do? Thanks to you and the pack, I’m alive, and Alyona is receiving treatment.”

“Everything is going to be fine, my friend,” Piccolo said. “Come to think of it; now that Mazza is gone, you’ve gotten an additional guardian angel.”

Alonzo scoffed. “Pico, I don’t think I believe that when people die, they turn out to be Angels.”

“Demon then,” Piccolo offered.

“None. I think when people die, they are just gone for good.”

“You are so pessimistic about the afterlife.” Piccolo turned towards the window and let his hand drop as a car overtook them. “You know what my old man would have called you back in Greece?”

“Eh, what?”

“Apistos,” Piccolo answered.

“And what does apistos mean?”

“It means unbeliever.”

“Oh,” Alonzo mumbled, adding a shrug afterward.

“What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“Okay, fine, I’m thinking about Alyona. I mean, how am I going to face her? Will she ever want me again?”

“I’m sure she understood the danger of being involved with a guy like you.” Piccolo stole a glance at Alonzo’s poker face.

“That’s the problem, man; she never fully was aware of who I was,” Alonzo complained. “I feel disgusted that she had to learn about my true nature under dire circumstances.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Piccolo assured. “At least now that’s one less thing to be worried about. I’m sure she will understand that too. It’s unlikely for anyone to spill that they are a werewolf.”

“Tsk, but I hope she doesn’t resent me for it. What if she sees me as a freak, huh? What if I spook her?”

“This is why I wish our kinds were always mated to our kind. You do realize that you have a second chance mate, right?”

“Yeah, the King’s daughter. She’s not my kind.”

“Technically, she is more of your kind than-“

“You know what I mean,” Alonzo stopped his friend there.

“Okay, if you say so, then follow your heart.”

“Damn! I can’t believe the coronation is happening tomorrow, and I won’t be going with Mazza.”

“Mhm, me neither,” Piccolo said. “Alonzo, uh, did you know that at some point, the King was considering Callisto to walk the aisle with his daughter?”

“I figured once I rejected the offer, the King would seek someone else, but I never imagined it would be Callisto of all people. How did you come across such info, Pico?”

“Yeah, about that,” Piccolo smiled. “I might have caught the fancy of one of the girls during that first meeting.”

“I see; you are fortunate then,” Alonzo responded. “I wonder who will walk the King’s daughter now.”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“What is?”

“It takes an alpha to walk the princess, and be that as it may, Antonio just stepped up to that position.”

“Hmm, so you believe Antonio will walk her?”

“Well, if the King so graciously allows it.”

Their conversation ended abruptly when they realized the car had arrived at the hospital. They got out of the car, walking side by side into the building. They were asked to wait for a while in the lobby. Although, not long after they had settled down, the doctor who tended to Alyona came their way. Alonzo rose to greet the man.

“Thank you, doc, for sticking out your neck for me,” Alonzo said.

“For you, I would do it all over again,” replied the doctor, offering a thin smile before his face turned serious.

“What is it?” Alonzo asked, sounding alarmed. He had heard the doctor’s uneven breathing and the slight increase in his heart rate. He sensed that a piece of awful news was coming his way.

“The b***d transfusion was successful. I’ve also run a few tests, and I can assure you that your Mistress will be fine, but sadly I’m afraid she lost the pregnancy.” The doctor squeezed Alonzo’s shoulder.

Piccolo jumped out of his seat to steady Alonzo because his leg wobbled. The doctor’s news had broken Alonzo on the spot. Alonzo sobbed painfully, and he did his best to suppress himself from wolfing out due to the overwhelming emotions he was feeling.

“It’s going to be okay, man.” Piccolo hugged Alonzo, rocking him gently. “Everything will be fine.”

The images of Alyona being defiled by Callisto and his men filtered through Alonzo’s mind. Antonio had come to him, seeking forgiveness for what his father made them do to his mate. He could have chosen to be ruthless and killed everyone in Callisto’s pack, but when he looked at Antonio, all he could see was a boy who had been through hell and back.

Even though Callisto was dead, Alonzo couldn’t hate him less. He wondered if the kind of hatred he felt was the same one Callisto had felt towards his family when he lost his mate. After all, Callisto had blamed the death of his mate upon Alonzo’s father.

“Doc, can I go be with her?” Alonzo breathed calmly, but his voice had lost any trace of emotion.

“Yes, of course, it will be best if you stay with her and talk to her till she’s conscious. She might feel a little disoriented when she wakes up. I’m so sorry for the loss. I have to go now, my friend.”

“Thank you, Doctor Hamzart.” Alonzo shook his hands with the doctor, and he received a pat on his shoulder. He then turned to Piccolo.

“I’ll wait here,” Piccolo said, and Alonzo replied with a nod.

Alonzo pushed the door to the ward slowly, and he saw Alyona lying peacefully. She looked so pretty. He listened to her steady heartbeat, and he also heard her breathing evenly. He sat beside her, taking her palm into his.

“I’m so sorry, my love,” Alonzo cooed. “I should’ve been more protective of you. Some days it just- I just unfit to be the Don or an alpha ….”

Alonzo continued to spill over his emotions until Alyona began to wake up. She opened her eyes, moaning softly as she regained consciousness.

“Alonzo?” His name fell out of her lips, causing him to shiver. She tried to sit up, and Alonzo helped raise the pillow to support her back.

“Hey dear,” Alonzo said.

“Don’t you dare call me sweet names,” Alyona cut in sharply, and she winced painfully.

“You shouldn’t yell,” Alonzo said, exhaling calmly.

Alyona scowled at him. “Did you know you were sending me to be kidnapped when you sent me out there?”

“Yes, I did, but there’s more to it than meets the eyes,” said Alonzo, stretching his hand to touch her face, but she cringes.

“Don’t you dare touch me!” Alyona warned.

“Babe, listen, I’m sorry, okay,” Alonzo whispered coldly. “But right now isn’t a decent time for us to fight. My grandfather is dead.”

“Mazza’s dead?” Alyona’s lips trembled as she formed the words.

Alonzo nodded. “And the doctor said that….”

“The doctor said what?” Alyona asked, staring at him feeling lost.

Alonzo managed to deliver the news, and as soon as Alyona learns about her miscarriage, she bursts into tears.

Alonzo didn’t imagine that things would get worse. Alyona blamed him for everything. She also recalled the wolf encounter, and although Alonzo revealed everything to her, she remained torn, in pain, and confused. She yelled at him to leave her sight, and she said she never wanted to see him again.
