6 : Mate

Chapter 6

Carson Point of view

“Mate,” My wolf Cleo whispered in my head as I was busy staring into the girl's eyes standing at theentrance of the gym.

However, that one word was like a bucket of ice-cold water on my senses and instantly my soft gazehardened while shock ran like electricity in my veins. I never wanted to have a mate in the first place,but a human as my mate was just another level of fucked up.

My wolf was just as shocked as me because he too was expecting a she-wolf as his mate, and thismade no sense to him either. Cleo had gone completely silent after whispering mate while Imentally screamed in frustration.

After a few more seconds of staring, I let go of the bar and made my way to my mate. She was tallerthan most she-wolves that ranged anywhere between 5'3 to 5'6 and this intrigued me. No doubt,there were models who were taller than my mate too, but she was just very different.

Be it her eyes or her height, she stood out in a crowd. She was really gorgeous to the point that Iwould have dated her in a heartbeat, but she was my mate and I wanted nothing to do with mymate. I could feel her eyes on me the whole time I was walking, but I didn't glance at her andcontinued to walk towards her till I was standing close enough to hear her heartbeat as if it wasmine.

“You should meet Miss Wesley, I'm very busy at the moment,” I spoke in a dismissing tone.

From the corner of my eyes, I was taking in her every reaction and when her face contorted like shewas about to cry; I felt bad for a few seconds before reminding myself that it's just the mate bondand nothing more.

I was no longer feeling bad for her at the reminder and watched her gulp before nodding her head.When she realized I'm not looking at her, she looked up and whispered okay while I was trying tonot get sucked in her black orbs.

The soft “Okay’ from her mouth did something to my insides, and I wanted to be close to her just forthis once because after that I was never going to give in to this mate bond. So, I let myself take aclose look at her and couldn't believe how beautiful she is.

She was flawless with her creamy skin glowing naturally, and lips that resembled rose petals. Myeyes couldn't focus on anything but her lips, and unknowingly I was already bending down to kissher. I was so close to her lips when suddenly the reality crashed on me, I should not be doing this.My eyes then flickered to her eyes and noticed that she has her eyes shut tightly. I knew then andthere that she was expecting a kiss, and I took that opportunity to break my mate ever so slowly.Instead of straightening, I moved to her ear and inhaled her scent, which was surprisingly verydifferent, and I couldn't put a finger on what she smelled like. I shook the thought of her scent outof my head and whispered, “Stay away from me.”

Without waiting for a second more, I straightened and turned around before walking back to thepull-up bars. My mate whose name I still didn't know stood at the same spot for some minutes andthen walked away without a single word.

I sighed, knowing that rejecting her won't be easy because she is not a wolf and she can't accept myrejection until she knows about my kind. I was engrossed in my thoughts when the gym door waspushed open and I thought it is my mate for a second before I heard the annoying voice; that Iknew so well.

“Carson, you are in trouble.” Benjamin, my best friend, broke the news to me.

“Benji, I'm trouble.” I reminded my future Beta while turning to him.

He chuckled at my words before running a finger in his messy auburn hair and spoke, “Alpha got toknow about you hooking up with Tiara from the rival pack and he's furious.”

"Oh god, not again. Why does he need to interfere in my sex life? She was a good fuck, that's all.” Itold Benjamin while walking towards the locker room

Benjamin followed behind me in silence and I knew he was going to give me a lecture about myhabits like always. When my ears picked up the sharp intake of air, I knew he was going to talk."Why don’t you think about your mate, Carson?”

I turned around and glared at him while his bottle-green eyes challenged me to not answer hisquestion. “I do not want a mate. How many times do I have to tell you this? I am going to choosethe one for me.” I replied to him with barely controlled anger.

The word mate was like gasoline to my anger, and I knew why? The fact that I have found her and Ican't just reject her because she is a fucking human was not something that I liked. “I know that butyou should still be careful, you never know what the moon goddess has in store for you,” Benjaminadvised me and walked to his own locker.

“You are going to be punished for sleeping with a rival, Alpha’s word for you.” He informed mebefore collecting everything from his locker.

"I already know that. Anyway, where are you going with all this stuff?” I queried him when he beganputting everything in a bag.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. I'm leaving for my official training tomorrow.” He answered whilecontinuing the task at hand.

“But you were supposed to leave a month later. There is still a month before you graduate fromcollege and we don’t go for training without our official degrees. Also, I did told dad that we will begoing together.” I reminded him while stopping him from packing anymore.

"Yea, about that, your father talked to the Dean and I'm graduating a month early now, so that I canleave for my Beta training sooner.” He clarified and looked at me straight.

“You did not tell me this, why? I'm supposed to be your Alpha in a year and I'm your best friend, yetyou didn't replace it necessary to inform me.” I almost yelled in anger.

“I just got to know this morning about it. I would have told you sooner had I known.” He calmlyresponded, making me feel guilty for my outburst.

“I'm sorry, I just am sad that you are leaving. We were supposed to go together and I'm mad aboutit.” I told him honestly.

Benjamin was a year older than me, making him my senior in college and leading to his earlytraining. I had requested my dad to hold his training so that we both can go together, but instead,he's sending him an entire month early.

“It's ok, I know you didn’t mean it. You have always had a temper, but then I should expect no lessfrom the future Alpha.” Benjamin remarked while picking up his bag, ready to leave.

“I'm going to miss you, Benji. Do not get yourself killed in the training or else I'm to coming hell justto kill you again.” I threatened my best friend while pulling his lean frame in a bro hug.

"Yes, Captain. Now, I gotta go, and might I remind you, mister, you have a class in five minutes.” Hetold me before heading towards the exit.

All the future pack Alpha's and Beta's needed to attend the training program after graduating tomake sure it prepares them to lead the pack. These trainings are deadly and there have been timeswhen the future Alphas and Betas ended up dead but no one has the authority to question thetraining. The training program is administered by the five strongest Alpha's around the world tomake sure there is no conflict.

My father happens to be the head of the program because our pack is the strongest, the reasonwhy I told him to let Benjamin stay for a year, but he has to do the opposite.

Now, not only I don't have my best friends at my side; I also have a human mate to reject.
