Chapter 22

The Betrayed Luna-

Five days later.

Natalie’s eyes fluttered open, she blinked a couple of times, trying to adjust to the dim light. of the room. She grunts slightly, her b*dy feels like it has been dragged through racks, and it hurt all over.

“Hnngh.” She grunts lowly, her throat is as dry as a desert, and she desperately wants water. She slowly looked around the room, two people were there, talking in hushed voices. Natalie blinked tiredly, her b*dy felt heavier than it should.

“Oh my! She’s awake!” Someone yells and she groaned from the noise, shutting her eyes again for the noise to subside. Katherine runs towards her excitedly, dropping to the chair beside her bed. Natalie opened her eyes again, blinking tiredly.

“W–water..” she croaked out, her voice barely a whisper but Katherine caught it. She rushes to grab a jar of water and pours it into a cup for her to drink, helping Natalie sit a little and drink it.

“I have to go call Madam Chrissy.” The other girl says and rushes out of the room, leaving the two alone.

“I’m so happy you didn’t die on me, Natalie. I was so scared.” Katherine says, her throat clogged. She sniffled as she helped her lay down again, putting the cup back beside her, she wiped the tears that trickled down her chin.

“How long?” Natalie whispered again, feeling slightly better after drinking water even though it tasted like death.

Katherine sighs, running her sleep–deprived eyes. “Five days, Natalie. You’ve been unconscious for five days.” She says and just then does the door flies open, revealing a rough–looking Madam Chrissy. Her eyes fell on Natalie and she gasped loudly, the book in her hand falling to the floor.

“You’re awake.” She gasped out, rushing towards her.

“This is impossible. How are you awake?” She asks in bewilderment. Natalie glanced at Katherine wondering what the hell the woman was talking about. “Y–you..” she paused to

swallow.

“How are you feeling?” She asked in a more normal way. Natalie shook her head. “Horrible. My entire b*dy hurts so bad and I feel crazily tired.” She whispered, still unable to speak well.

“That’s normal. Apart from all that, you don’t feel anything else?” She asked and Natalie shook her head, a little puzzled at the woman’s shocked expression.

“Welcome back, Natalie. You’ve kept a lot of us worried.” She says after a while. Natalie furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, wondering what the woman meant by that. She looked at Katherine who had now gone back to being Madam Chrissy’s assistant and wondered if the other knew what the woman meant.

She lay there as different things were placed on her b*dy, letting them work. She wondered though, what made her unconscious for five days that’s left her feeling this bad. She looks at Katherine and Madam Chrissy.

“Can I ask, what happened to me?” She asks, not waiting for their permission before asking. Madam Chrissy glanced at her. “You were poisoned.” She replied.

Natalie reels back in shock, her eyes widening as the words settle in her head. She was poisoned. “No one thought you would make it, at least not me. We’ve tried anything but nothing was working which explains all of our collective shock to see you wake up like you were in a deep sleep and had a bad dream.” She tells Natalie who could only stare at her blankly.

“Do you remember eating or drinking anything before you passed out that day?” She asked, still pressing forward, applying the last herbal medicine to the wounds she had created. Natalie thinks back to five days ago. What exactly happened five days ago and who would try to kill her? If she was still in the silver rain pack, she would think Eleanor had tried to kill her by poisoning her but here? She had no idea.

Natalie shook her head after realizing the three people still waiting for her to speak. Madam Chrissy nods like she’d been expecting it. “That’s okay. How do you feel now?” She asked

“Better, I don’t feel like death is hovering around me anymore but I don’t feel all that good still.” She replied. Madam Chrissy nods again, standing up.

“That’s okay, you’ll feel better soon.” She says and looks at Katherine. “Wipe her b*dy with some warm water and clean clothes. Apply the balm once you’re done and try to make her more..” she paused for a second and smiled although Natalie could tell this was just to suppress her curiosity as to how she looked. “Normal.” She completes, looking at the other girl.

“Come on, we have news to announce.” She says and walks out of the room with the girl trailing behind her. Natalie lay still as Katherine maneuvered her way to the bathroom to grab things. She watched the other walk back with a bowl filled with warm water and a white towel. She sets it beside Natalie and sits down, dipping the towel into the bowl, and starts to cleanse her, starting from her arm.

“What did Madam Chrissy mean when she said I kept a lot of people worried.” She asked and Katherine smiled, glancing at her. “I was worried, isn’t that enough?” She asked and Natalie tried rolling her eyes, it hurt though.

“Don’t patronize me, Katherine. I’m unwell.” She pouts, sulking.

“Okay, okay. What she meant by that is, well, apart from Myself and well Madam Chrissy being worried. Alpha Thorne was the worst. He went insane and I mean insane. He stayed by your side for the past five days and only left when it came to important things. He barely ate or drank and just watched you like a hawk. He was barely functioning and I tell you, nothing and no one on earth could make him leave your side for even a second. He locked up everyone who had stepped in the kitchen that day. Everyone who had eaten drank, and touched even a spoon is in the dungeon being tortured.” She tells her. Natalie’s mouth hung open, her eyes widened in shock.

“A–Are you joking with me right now?” She asked and Katherine shook her head.

“I’m telling the truth. I won’t lie about something like this. Everyone has been shocked at his reaction and by now almost everyone in the kingdom knows your name. News travels fast after all.” Natalie couldn’t believe everything she just heard, not only did it seem untrue but what? Alpha Thorne would do all of that for her? Natalie? Isn’t that just preposterous?

“You don’t need to believe me because once you step out there, everyone will look at you differently.” She shrugged. Natalie sighed, letting Katherine clean her b*dy.

Thorne roughly scrolled through the many papers left in his office. He has not been able to work as he should and, that is making more work pile up for him. He groans, setting his elbows against the table, holding his head in his hands, he shuts his eyes close. A knock at the door jolts him out of his thoughts. He lifts his head up, leaning back against the chair.

“Come in.” He calls out.

The door squeaked open and Madam Chrissy stepped in, beside her was one of her assistants. Thorne furrowed his eyebrows, sitting up tensely, his heart dropping at the mere sight of her.

“I have news, Your grace.” She starts and he tenses up, swallowing hard, and nods, hoping she wasn’t about to give him the worst news ever.

“Natalie..” Madam Chrissy began, pausing slightly to gauge his reaction.

“What’s happened to her?” He asks harshly, unable to keep calm. He could feel his heartbeat thumping hard in his chest. Every part of his b*dy was tense and hard, waiting for her to speak.

“Natalie has miraculously woken up. She’s conscious.” Madam Chrissy finally lets out. Thorne stares at her for what seems like hours but it’s only second.

“She’s awake. Your grace.” She says again. His breath stuttered, he shuts his eyes, hands folded into a fist. He opens his eyes once again.

“Natalie is awake?” He asks slowly as though the healer would change her mind and say no. As though it was a dream and she’d laugh. She doesn’t. Instead, she nods, a small smile on her l*ps.

Thorne sags against the chair, feeling everything all at once. “W–would you like to see her?” Madam Chrissy asks carefully. He snaps his eyes open, looking at her.

“She can receive me?” He asks and the woman smiles, nodding. “Yes, your grace. She can,” she replied. He doesn’t waste a second. He gets on his feet, hurriedly walking towards the door where the two women stood. He looks at Madam Chrissy again and bolts out of the door, the two of them behind him. He ignores the shocked faces of the slaves as he bolts through the hallway, his heart thumping wildly in his chest. He could only think of one thing, one person.

Thorne approached the door, his feet slapping down as he got there, his chest heaving heavily, his eyes stuck on the shut door. If he twisted the doorknob, he’d see her. He won’t see her lying on that bed all frail and fragile but she’ll be awake. She’ll be alive. He places his hand over the doorknob, pausing only for a second before pushing the door open.

His panicked eyes found hers immediately, it was as though a heavy metal was lifted off his shoulders. Natalie’s eyes widen on seeing him, she instantly tries to sit up and greet him with Katherine helping her even though she couldn’t move that much. That seemed to pull Thorne out of shock. He rushes towards her and before she can let out a word, he draws her towards him and hugs her as tight as he can.

Natalie’s eyes

widen in shock at the Lycan king hugging her. She couldn’t help but notice the shocked faces of the others in the room or the ones outside the room. The door was still open and everyone just watched him, Thorne hugging her so tightly. Natalie’s breath

hitches and she closes her eyes, allowing his scent to Envelope every part of her. She could perceive the fear, the panic, the pain, and the joy in his scent. Every one of these raw emotions filled her and a tear ran down her cheek.

And when they opened their eyes, the room had been emptied, leaving just the two alone. The door shut from outsiders, allowing them to dwell in themselves.

Thorne leaned back, smiling softly at her, his eyes seemed to glimmer the more he stared at her. Natalie has seen that look before, directed at her but at the spur of the moment. She’s never seen it this close and now…

Thorne helped her sit, placing two pillows behind her to allow her to rest her back. She smiled when he hummed in satisfaction. “How do you feel?” He asked and she nodded.

“Good. I feel good.” She replied honestly because that’s how she felt. Good. Too good.

“I know it’s soon and I shouldn’t be asking you this right now but, I need to.” He starts and she nods, waiting for him to speak.

“Do you remember anything from that day? You were by my side all day so I know that much but, did you take anything from anyone or did you eat something?” He asked and she understood. Katherine had to been right then. Natalie opened her mouth to speak and tell him she doesn’t remember but she stopped, eyebrows furrowed as though a memory flashed in her head.

“I-” she stopped, she wasn’t sure. There was no reason for the girl to poison her and it’s just weird. Thorne catches the drift in her eyes.

“No matter how little or insignificant you think it is, tell me. Let me play it out in my head, alright.” He pressed forward, slowly reaching for her hand and holding her hand in his. Natalie’s eyes drop to her hand in his and she swallows hard, feeling something bubble inside of her. She nodded.

“I don’t think it’s much but when I went to get water for you, a woman had stepped out of the kitchen as I was about to step in. I only remember because we did collide at the door. She rushed off and I wondered why she couldn’t apologize for hitting me when it was her fault for not looking at where she was going to. I also drank water but I remember the cup I used..” she trailed off, shaking her head. Nothing was wrong with the cup she used and yet she couldn’t help but feel weird about the cup.

“What happened to the cup?” Thorne asked.

“Nothing. I think my head is all jumbled up and I might be rambling on. That’s all I

remember” she tells him.

“The woman, can you recognize her?” He asked and Natalie shook her head. “I’m sorry, I can’t. It was dark.” She replied and this threw Thorne off.

“The kitchen light was off?” He asks and she nods, pausing again. Not only the kitchen light but the passage light too. She had been in a hurry and didn’t notice it.

“Yes. The passage light was off too.” She replied.

“Can you describe the woman?” He asks and she shakes her head again.

“I’m sorry, I can’t. I only remember she’s shorter than me and her scent was different. She smelled like a mixture of a damp soul and decomposing leaves.” Thorne nods, registering everything in his head.

Natalie watched him carefully, he made no move to leave her side and it left her feeling weird inside. She furrowed her eyebrows, feeling a weird energy flow through her down to her fingers. She’s felt it before, it was subtle and low but now, it’s heavy and sharp.
