Chapter 808
"Kari, I admit I rushed things before," Ronald said, his voice hoarse with emotion. "I was afraid you'd marry Nathan. Now that you and Nathan have split, I won't pressure you to accept me. All I'm asking for is a chance."
A wave of heat rushed to Kari's cheeks. "I've always seen you like a brother..."
And if it hadn't been for that brotherly image, she wouldn't have felt such strong aversion, such disgust, to Ronald's affections.
"Well, from now on, stop seeing me as a brother."
Her lips pressed into a thin line. She really didn't have feelings for Ronald, but her mom trusted him implicitly.
She didn't want to make a scene.
Ronald took her silence as consent.
"Come on, I'll drive you home."
Following Ronald, Kari returned home only to be greeted cheerily by Willa, who then pulled Ronald inside.
"Ronald, you've been such a help with Kari lately."
Kari rolled her eyes at her mom's approval of Ronald and retreated to her room.
Willa sighed, "This child..."
"Kari's still young. Please don't be upset with her."
Ronald handed Willa a gift box he had received from his assistant. "These are for you, some health supplements to take care of yourself. You've worked so hard over the years." He genuinely appreciated Willa After all, if it weren't for her, he might not have pulled through.
Slightly embarrassed, Willa replied, "You shouldn't have, Ronald. Just visiting is enough."
She had come to regard Ronald as her own son, nearly crying her eyes out when he was in jail. Now, she cherished him deeply.
"Come in and sit down. You're always welcome here. I'll make you some chicken soup next time."
Ronald managed a rare smile, "I'll make sure to visit often."
His assistant shivered behind him.
There was no need for such a chilling smile.

Once seated, Ronald persuaded Willa to stop pressuring Kari.
Willa exhaled deeply. "I've been reflecting on that. I'm just worried that..."
She didn't want to be the one to break them up. But her husband had died at the hands of the Jarvis family, and she couldn't let her daughter marry into that.
"Auntie Willa, listen to me. Kari has agreed not to associate with the Jarvis family. You can relax a bit, so you don't push her away."
With Ronald's repeated assurances that he would keep an eye on Kari, Willa finally agreed. "Thank you, Ronald. I appreciate it." Ronald gave a subdued smile.
After that, Willa indeed gave Kari more space, and Kari felt a weight lifted off her shoulders, even beginning to see Ronald in a better light. Fresh from a late shift, Kari was called into Brittany's office.
"How's your mom doing?"
"She's doing alright." Kari breathed a sigh of relief. "She's not hovering over me all the time anymore. We're quite harmonious at the moment." Brittany felt relieved but hesitated when she thought about Kari and Nathan. Despite knowing it wasn't her place, she ventured, "You and Nathan...”
"We're done."
Kari let a rare hint of sorrow show through.
Since the wedding fiasco, everyone had been concerned about her. The more they cared, the more it hurt.
She wished more than anyone that she could have stayed with Nathan forever, but it just
wasn't meant to be.
Brittany understood Kari's pain and patted her shoulder. "If you need a break, just let me know."
Kari shook her head. "A break would just give me time to brood. I'd rather focus on work.. And you and Mr. Salter, have you set a date?"
Kari turned the question back on Brittany.
They had decided to get married, after all. It was time to set a date.
Brittany's face brightened at the mention. "We're still picking the day. We're thinking of having the wedding either later this year or early next."
