CAULDER

Something was stirring inside of Remy. I could feel how angry she was, and I didn't understand what was going on. When I smiled at her, she didn't smile back. When I looked at her, her gaze averted.

Now, she looked down at her hands. They were open and face up in her lap. She still hadn't answered my question, but I could feel her thoughts churning. I just didn't know what she was thinking. What had the past month looked like for her? What struggles had she been facing while I wasn't there to be next to her? "Please just talk to me," I begged. Remy wasn't the type to be this reserved. Normally, she was upfront with her emotions.

"I'm angry," Remy said. Her voice was soft and quiet, but she didn't sound angry. "About what?" I asked.

Remy took a deep breath and continued staring at her hands as if the answer was written on them. "They took you, and they tortured you. It broke you, and I'm just so angry about it. I know I should be happy you're back, and you're okay, but there is this anger simmering beneath the surface, and I don't know how to stop it. I want to kill them for what they did to you. I want them to suffer in a way that I have never wanted before."

She closed her fists and squeezed her eyes shut. "I hate feeling this way, but I can't stop the anger. I'm scared it's changing me."

My chest tightened as the words spilled out of her mouth. I knew exactly what she was talking about. The same feeling had settled into my chest, growing a little more each day I had spent with the council. I had grown angry and bitter, and I wanted to watch them all burn. I didn't recognize myself.

Even now, I was able to put a smile on my face, thrilled to be reunited with my mate and my sister, but underneath the smile, the anger was still there. I didn't know how to comfort Remy or tell her it would be okay, when I didn't know how to stop it or make it feel better for myself.

"I'm angry, too," I admitted. "After what I have been through, I don't know if I'll ever be the same."

Remy finally looked up at me, and she seemed almost surprised. "But you seem so... happy."

"I am happy," I half-laughed. "I'm happy to be back with you and Harper, because I know with you two by my side, I can get through anything. It doesn't mean I'm not angry or broken right now. I don't think those emotions are mutually exclusive." "I'm happy you're back, too, for the record," Remy said, pulling her lips tight.

"If you're happy, then why don't you give me a smile," I teased.

Remy narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips. It reminded me of when she was a child, and I would try to get her to smile for me. She would get angry at me until I eventually made her laugh.

"I'm not a child. I'm not going to force myself to smile," Remy said.

"Aww, come on. Just a little one," I begged, a laugh accompanying my voice.

She groaned, but then she pulled her lips back in to a strained smile. It didn't even look like a smile, since she was showing all of her teeth and her lips were in more of a rectangle shape instead of the normal crescent moon shape.

I burst out laughing, unable to control myself. "You look so funny."

Remy slammed her hands on the table as she stood up. "If you are just going to make fun of me, then I'm leaving."

She started leaving the room, and I instantly felt guilty. I wasn't trying to make her feel bad. I just wanted her to let go of all of that stress for a moment and genuinely smile, even if it was for a second.

Before she could leave, I grabbed her hand and pulled her back. "Hey, Remy. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have teased you like that."

Remy turned, and for a split second I thought she was going to hit me. Instead, she wrapped her arms around me. "Why are you such a dummy?" she whispered into my chest.

Before I could ask her what she was talking about, a light started to glow, starting from in between us. It quickly engulfed us, and the room around us disappeared. I knew the light was coming from Remy. Her magic was dancing all around me, pulling at my chest. Then suddenly I felt my own magic reach out to hers.

The light grew even brighter, until the only thing I could see was Remy's blue eyes and the brightness of our magic working together.

"What's happening?" I asked, but no sound came out of my mouth.

I couldn't feel Remy in my arms any longer. My entire body was buzzing with magic, and I felt better than I had since before Winslow took me to the Council of Magic. My magic flowed freely, and my bones no longer ached. Everything felt lighter, felt easier.

The light started to dim, and I could see again. Remy stood in front of me, looking at me just as confused as I was. As I looked around, we were no longer in the conference room. We were in a room where the walls were all white.

"What just happened?" Remy asked, looking around.

I shook my head. "I don't know. I think you healed me, though." I looked down at my arms, and all of the bruises were gone. I tested my mobility, and I felt like I was back to my old self, if not better.

"I wasn't trying to," Remy said. "I've never healed anyone before. I didn't even know I could do that. It just felt like my magic reacted to yours, and I had no control over it."

I nodded slowly. I had felt my magic reaching out to Remy's, and it felt like her magic pulled mine awake again. "The Council of Magic forced my magic to go through its full awakening," I said, looking around at the empty room. "It's the first time we've touched since both of our magic has been fully awakened. It was like they recognized each other."

"It's Cain's magic," Remy said with sudden realization. "Long story short, he gave up his magic, and we ended up with it, so I think it's reaching out to its other half."

I looked down at my hands, and wisps of light were dancing off of them. Remy's hands were doing the same thing. I could feel the truth of what she said. My magic was dancing and happy to finally be reunited with its other half. It was like waking up from a long deep sleep and finally seeing the sun again.

"Wait, what's that?" Remy asked, suddenly walking away from me.
