The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 160 An Awkward Situation
Emily asked, "So, back then, it was just Michael and Bryan running the Smith Corporation on their own?"
Emily was floored. She had only planned to visit the Smith Mansion to see Mason and Veda, but she stumbled upon some jaw-dropping news.
This news finally made Emily understand why Michael was so furious last night.
Veda nodded, "Yeah, Bryan could've backed out before the agreement was signed. If he had, Michael wouldn't have been stuck with all those penalties. Six million dollars! And Michael was only eighteen."
"Not only that, he started the Smith Corporation from scratch, which means he was just a high school senior with no money. Imagine being hit with a six-million-dollar debt at that age. And Bryan? He just skipped town! Honestly, Michael shouldn't forgive him; he should demand compensation for emotional distress!"
The room fell silent, the tension thick in the air. Emily's face was a mix of emotions, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts.
Yeah, just like Veda said. Michael was only eighteen, trying to break away from his family and start fresh with his best friend. But his friend betrayed him, leaving him with a massive debt.
How did Michael get through it back then? Emily couldn't know, nor could she judge Michael for being cold and ruthless.
Thinking about it, Emily felt a deep sadness. She was sad for misunderstanding Michael and for blaming him so suddenly. Just then, her phone rang.
"I'm at the Smith Mansion," Emily said, feeling a bit guilty and unsure how to face Michael.
"I know," came the cold reply from the other end.
"I'm coming back right now," Emily said, thinking Michael was calling to rush her.
Michael replied, "No need, I'm right outside the Smith Mansion. Come out."
Emily said, "But I haven't changed into my dress yet."
Michael replied, "I brought it for you."
As Michael finished speaking, Emily thought of the white dress from yesterday. She blinked, listening to the call end, and turned to Veda.
"Michael is here, I have to go. Veda, you should also go back inside and get ready. Once you're done, call Daniel to pick you up. Sometimes, when faced with an opportunity, you have to seize it. Because if you let it slip away, you never know when the next one will come."
As she spoke, Emily's expression gradually dimmed. Indeed, just like her and Michael, they might never have another chance.
Countless misunderstandings always arose between them, making Emily increasingly believe that perhaps forced happiness would eventually turn into an illusion, like a bubble.
Emily added, "Besides, Daniel asked you to be his date, and you're actually very happy about it, aren't you?"
After saying this, Emily squeezed Veda's hand.
Veda immediately felt a surge of strength. She smiled and responded, "Okay, Emily, I'll listen to you."
Outside the Smith Mansion.
Emily saw a sports car parked at the entrance, not the Maybach that Michael usually drove.
Curiously, she walked over to take a look.
Sure enough, Michael was in the driver's seat.
Emily opened the passenger door, hopped in, and said, "Let's hit Emerald Lake Manor first. I need to change." Michael, looking all serious, just nodded towards the back seat.
Emily turned and saw a big bag back there. She reached over and grabbed it.
To her surprise, it was the pink dress she had admired in the wardrobe earlier.
"You..." Emily started.
Michael cut her off, "Put it on. I know forcing you isn't ideal."
He seemed to be speaking in riddles.
Anyway, he was acting like a different person, not joking or talking much.
The car was so quiet, Emily felt the pressure. She took a deep breath and asked, "Where should I change?"
Michael still didn't answer.
Honestly, Emily didn't expect mentioning Bryan would get such a strong reaction from Michael.
While waiting for Michael to respond, Emily couldn't help but think about what Veda had said.
"Michael and Bryan, it's probably hard for them to reconcile. You don't know, I used to like Bryan a lot. He was smart, came from a good family... but mainly because he was handsome."
"But Michael couldn't stand him. Every time I mentioned Bryan, he looked like he was going to explode. After that, I gave up. I care about Michael a lot, and I couldn't give him up for Bryan."
Seeing Michael's current expression, Emily felt quite helpless. She wasn't aware of what happened between him and Bryan. Previously, she had only heard Jessica mention it briefly, and it was only today that she understood more from Veda. Why was he so angry?
"I said, where should I change..." Emily couldn't hold it in any longer and looked directly at Michael, repeating her question.
Before she could finish, Michael slammed on the brakes, startling Emily. "Michael, what are you doing?"
Michael replied, "Change in the car. This sports car has a special single-layer film. You can't see inside from the outside. I'll go out and keep watch."
With that, Michael unbuckled his seatbelt and got out.
Emily said, "Michael, do you have to talk to me like this? I admit, I was too abrupt about Bryan..."
"How many times do I have to tell you not to mention Bryan in front of me?" Michael interrupted her again.
He seemed to have other thoughts in his mind. But he wouldn't say everything at once, just sulking like a teenager. Emily couldn't help but wonder, 'Is this how a domineering CEO should behave?' The tension in the air thickened again.
Finally, Michael got out of the car.
Just as he said, you couldn't see inside from the outside, but you could see outside from the inside.
Emily watched Michael as he took out a pack of cigarettes and lit one.
There was no way to persuade him now.
Helplessly, Emily had to change her clothes first.
After all, the jewelry exhibition wouldn't wait, and it would be rude to be late.
After tonight, she would replace a chance to explain things to Michael slowly.
Soon, Emily changed into her dress, quickly applied some lipstick, and touched up her makeup in the car.
She was already naturally beautiful, standing out in a crowd and drawing everyone's attention. Now, with the pink dress, she looked even more elegant and sweet.
It was a completely different style from before.
So when Emily got out of the car, Michael, who was smoking, was momentarily stunned.
