The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 217 Apology and Letting Go
The nurse had been changing Michael's bandages these past few days with her daughter tagging along, and they were all getting pretty chummy.
Seeing him say that, the nurse quickly chimed in. "Mrs. Smith, Mr. Smith is right! It's not that I don't appreciate your kindness, but it's really not cool to take flowers from a patient. Thanks for the thought, but I'll have my daughter pick some from the garden. We've got plenty in the backyard! Alright, I'll come back later to go over the discharge instructions with Mr. Smith and change the bandages one last time! Mrs. Smith, have a good chat!"
With that, the nurse walked out.
The room got a bit tense.
Emily didn't know what to say to Michael, especially since yesterday's incident was still a bit awkward.
She just turned to the bedside table, grabbed the food she had prepared, and handed it to Michael. "I made you some oatmeal porridge. Since you're still recovering, it's better to eat something light. Also, when you get home, I'll let Ava prepare light meals for you."
For some reason, hearing Emily's gentle instructions made Michael feel a bit sad and reluctant.
After hesitating for a while, and after Emily fed him a spoonful of oatmeal porridge, he couldn't help but say, "I can do it myself. The doctor told me that although the wound is on your skull, your fingers were also slightly injured that day, probably because of us..."
Mentioning that day, Emily felt really embarrassed.
Thinking back to when she had pushed Michael away forcefully, and Michael had kept trying to press towards her, Emily felt suffocated and wanted to escape from Michael.
Emily interrupted, "Forget it, let's not talk about it. In any case, all of this is my fault. I should take good care of you."
Michael said, "But I'm getting discharged tomorrow. Didn't you just entrust me to Ava?"
Michael's question left Emily momentarily speechless.
It was true.
Once Michael was discharged tomorrow, they would never see each other again.
From then on, Ava would take care of all of Michael's needs, and she wouldn't have to help him with ties or bowties anymore.
After all, Mason had silently accepted their decision to divorce.
Scarlett had already been released from prison, and Veda was powerless in this matter.
Emily couldn't help but think to herself that she should have realized this long ago.
For the Smith family, reputation and family were the most important things.
She was just the final casualty of this battle.
Blinking her eyes, Emily collected her thoughts and composed herself.
She didn't answer Michael's question but instead changed the subject indirectly. "The situation at Smith Corporation has been stable recently, so you don't need to worry. I can continue to manage it for now... But hasn't Andrew returned from his honeymoon yet?"

Hearing this, Michael was momentarily stunned.
The next second, he realized he needed to continue his lie. "Not yet, he extended his leave for another month."
A month?
Hadn't he already been on leave for two months?
Did a honeymoon really take that long?
Emily didn't expect Michael to be so lenient with his subordinate.
Michael added, "For now, I'll keep handling things at Smith Corporation. We'll stay in touch."
Emily couldn't argue with that. After all, this was all her doing. If it weren't for her, Michael wouldn't have been stuck here for all these tests. Thinking of tests... Emily felt a bit embarrassed again. "When will you get the results of your tests?" Michael scratched his head, feeling awkward. "Grandpa is just bored... No, he wants to punish me, it's purely to get back at me!"
Emily couldn't help but smile at his words. Her smile was beautiful, and seeing it, Michael felt a bit moved, but he couldn't say it directly. Instead, he thought about yesterday's incident...
Someone had to bring it up.
Finally, Michael spoke up. "About what my mom said yesterday... Don't take it to heart."
Emily's eyelids trembled, and she felt a bit awkward, her smile freezing on her face.
Hearing Michael say that, Emily was surprised. She looked at Michael in astonishment, only to see him gesturing for her to sit down.
Emily pursed her lips and sat down. Michael spoke again. "She... after all, she's my mom. I know it's not right to use that as an excuse to brush aside the harm she caused you, and I always felt that I share the blame for her mistakes. I apologize on her behalf."
"And about what happened yesterday, I already know the details. You don't need to pay attention to her gossip. She has to stay at the Smith Mansion for her retirement, that's also my grandpa's decision. Otherwise... I might have sent her abroad."
"Emily, I'm really sorry for what my mom did to you... But don't worry, from now on, you won't have any more entanglements with her, and you won't have to step into the Smith Mansion again."
Hearing Michael say this, Emily felt a surge of complex emotions. She didn't know how to respond to Michael's apology. She knew Michael was sincere, but she also understood that a few words couldn't erase everything Scarlett had done to her.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, and then spoke slowly. "Michael, I... I understand your position and appreciate your sincerity. But what your mom did to me can't be erased with an apology. She avoided severe punishment thanks to you saving me in time back then. I can count that as a favor to you. But for me, blood relations can't change anything. Your family ties don't justify an apology."
Her voice was calm, but it carried a firm tone.
Michael nodded, his eyes filled with guilt and helplessness. "I understand. I can't do anything else, but I'll make sure she doesn't disturb your life again."
Hearing Michael say this, Emily smiled slightly, a hint of relief in her smile. "Thank you, Michael. Now, I just want to focus on my own life. I hope you can understand. What I said yesterday is indeed the truth about our current situation. We should separate, not hinder each other and hurt others any more."
Emily almost mustered the courage to say this. Perhaps they could reconcile the past, but they could never smile and bless each other. Because Emily believed she was lying. How could she not love Michael? She had always loved him, and it never changed over the years.
